One of the most common questions I get asked is how did I get started online?
It's time to tell my story! This series will feature the highlights of my online experience, as well as some of the things I learned along the way.
Part 1 goes back to the VERY beginning. How exactly DID I get started in creating a website?
It probably happened differently than you might imagine!
I hope you enjoy this series...

This is a great story. Figuring out a way to get free games, and using that to start a business in pre internet days, lol. I'm looking forward to part 2.

Joel, you are absolutely correct, one must have a passion for something to succeed in the dot comm industry or else our goals become more distant!!!

Joel, thank you for continuing on to help all of us "little folk" (no I'm not a Mini Kiss) get started. You always provide great ideas to your followers, but you have a knack of doing it in a way that, I believe, no other marketer on the internet does... you're the friendly "Guy Next Door" who truly wants to see people succeed. Thank you so much. You deserve everything you've achieved and thanks for sharing. God Bless!

Thanks for the video.
Last time I was here you has all sorts of hair on your face. You look like a much nicer, down to Earth person now. So I think because of that i'll subscribe

Great story. Yeah I'm not that way inclined but you definitely should keep the facial hair off. You looked like buff bagwell from WCW Wrestling before.
Besides all of that, I've been enjoying your tips and I look forward to learning more.

Hi Joel,
Very nice!
Michael pointed this out; he said "leave a comment from the newsletter".
Either he's complimenting us both, or it's time for me to throw him out...;)

Great lesson. I will have to get my 9 year old son to watch this. He has already started programing his own games and wants to start a gaming business. This may serve as further inspiration to do what he loves... not that he has any problems with that at his age.

Just last night I was talking with a friend about starting a site based on the notion that "everybody has a story" and it was either ironic or a "sign" that the first email I opened this morning had the first line as the same thing. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Joel!
I actually knew that story, but I think it's awesome that you share it, because it's important for people to realize that it's really about a journey, not a destination, and that your journey has been one where you've committed to producing awesome stuff. In return, life has rewarded you with some pretty darn amazing things.
Thanks for sharing your story Joel, and inspiring others (like me, here in Buenos Aires) to go out and create their own stories.
Warmest,
Jonathan

Hey Joel,
It seems so funny that you became who you are today over video games. I know that I always wondered how people did it and had the same idea for computer hardware but I never really had the time to do it. Maybe now is the time to do something like that and build the ultimate machine on reviewing parts.
thanks

Hey Joel, Very Cool video, whaddya think of this.
I'm getting ready to do something very similar on my site. But instead of blogging my bio video, putting it in my "About Us" page link right at the top. With a reminder to read, or something since About Us pages, for the most part are ignored. I suppose that is because they have been pretty dry, boring copy of "who cares" stuff anyway.
Video does add that "human element" doesn't it?
Any thoughts on this?

Your right Joel we should lead our lives in the passions we love, could
make for a much healthier world. Or would it?

Hey thanks for sharing. Now I can share this story with my students on how you started it. The great thing is you manage to explain to us how you started to it even without any money involve - barter trading!!

Great video Joel. It is all about the passion for sure.
Have a great weekend......Rick

Hi Joel,
You are crazy, in a good way, for giving, giving, giving (did I mention giving?). Here is why:
Because you gave, without asking money for it, I started blogging in February this year after reading your guide on blogging and ordering the dvd. Guess what I found? I have a passion about family issues in my country and I love to write for impact. My adsense account is not that great at he moment but after going through what you have been teaching, I can see why and I hope to be making money with a passion I have had for a long time.
April 12, 2008 06:45 PM
That's good advice Joel. My forum is not what I am passionate about so I think I'll open a couple of categories at my forum that relate to my passions.
Thanks
Mike

Good thing ! The problem for most is when we have so many ideas but we are not trying them because of the fear...fear for failure, and for the time wasted. Is good when you can optimize some activities and have a lot of trials in a quick time.

Another constructive offering Joel
Couldn't agree more. As a recruiter for nearly 15 years, I tell people when they're at a career cross-road, to take a piece of paper and make 3 columns - 1st column is for what they're good at; 2nd column is for what they enjoy doing most - where their passions lie; and 3rd column is for what kinds of jobs will provide them with the opportunity to do what they're best at and enjoying doing the most
You were able to do this in 1994 and looks like you've followed the model ever since. The money will follow if everything else has been done properly and for the right reasons
Keep them coming
Be your best and love your life

You said this: "So when will I learn your video editing program "tricks" ? ? ?"
Did you notice Joel's computer in the background? It's a 24" Intel iMac. Comes with iMovie and a few other cool pieces of free software. Great for doing video, podcasts, etc. That's a great place to start! ;-)
Good Luck!
