Amazon.com Stuck it to Me

Posted on December 8, 2004 03:54 PM by Joel Comm

I love Amazon.com. Even though I probably shouldn't shop there due to the amount of smut they sell, I still love shopping there. But they really ticked me off today.

I ordered a copy of Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer Suite 6.0 a couple weeks back. We are thinking of building a new home and I wanted to get an idea of what it might look like. Well, the program was not what I wanted, so I decided to return it to Amazon. I knew they would charge me a fee for returning the item, as well as a shipping cost. But I had no IDEA what else they would do.

The item cost $74.99. The charged me $4.98 for using their return shipping label. And then they charged me $37.50 for a Return Processing Fee! My total refund for this item? $41.99. WHAT?

So I emailed them back and told them that was completely unacceptable. I told them to charge me for the product and ship it to me. I'll get more for it on ebay as a USED item than sending it back to Amazon as NEW! Is this not ridiculous?

More on this story as it develops...

Honestly? This is about par for the course with software. I'm suprised that Amazon.com took it back at all, opened. Most stores won't.

Mr. Joel aka Mr. Republican has a knack of complaining too much. Hes like a typical naggin wife.

  3. Joel Says:

    Sarah, the software was UNOPENED!

Jose, sound like you are complaining about me complaining. Quit yer whinin' ;-)

  4. Sarah of WA Says:

Unopened? Okay when you said the software was not what you wanted, I figured you had figured that out from opening it and loading/running it. Yeah, not sure I understand the restock fee on unopened software.

*goes to check out Amazon.com's policy on software*

  5. MarcoPolo Says:

You know how easy it is to make something look 'unopened?'

Probably should have read the return policy before hand. You know , that 20 page document all in fine print?

  6. Joel Says:

Amazon finally listened to me and gave me full credit. Sometimes you just gotta make a stink to get anything done! ;-)
