I'm always going on about the importance of networking at conferences. That's because I don't know of any strategy that can improve an online publishing business's success rate faster.
Networking puts you in touch with opportunities that you can't find any other way. It builds the sort of business relationships that can last for many profitable years. It really does make running a business fun.
And there's just no better place to do it than in person at a conference.
But that's not the only place where you can feel the power of networking.
I know a lot people have been experiencing the Digg effect.
This is when an article you write gets so many recommendations on Digg.com that it makes it to their home page. Suddenly, your page views go through the roof. In fact, it's not uncommon for impressions to spike so high in such a short space of time that the server crashes.
It sounds like the publisher won the lottery but often there's a bit more to it than that. Users of Digg can build contact lists, track what their friends are recommending and pitch in with their own Diggs too.
That means that if you take the time to sign up to Digg, build your own contact list and network on the site, you can create a tool for giving your website regular turbo injections of users.
When you submit your own site, your friends will recommend it giving it momentum to shoot up the list and onto the home page.
Of course, you also have to create the sort of content that people will enjoy reading. They won't just Digg anything, however good your online friends are.
Digging your posts isn't as powerful as the sort of deals you can create with the people you meet at conferences but it can give your ad revenues a very useful, quick boost.

I often meet users who do not get the power of networking. All they promote are their own articles. Me, Me, Me... You could have the best steak in the world, but sometimes I want a hamburger or spaghetti. I do still want a good hamburger though, not a sub-par one. People get tired of hearing the same type of message over and over and want variety.
Pick high quality articles to cross promote and everyone wins. You, the person your promoting and your followers all benefit. Keep screaming Me, Me, Me and they may very well stop listening at all!
