I've gone the majority of the year without a compelling computer game to buy. Of course, I purchased World of Warcraft in 2004, so that doesn't count. But things have taken a turn for the better this past month. Look at what is now in my PC gaming queue.
Black and White 2 - the first game was somewhat of a disappointment, and my intial dabbling with the sequel leaves me wondering where the beef is
Age of Empires III - It is really Age of Empire II with more micromanagement. I may get bored quickly.
Star Wars Battlefront II - Hey, it's Star Wars! The first game was fantastic and the sequel improves on the action, graphics and gameplay. Great for online play, this one will probably be in my CD drive quite a bit.
Gun - Not since LucasArts Outlaws has the PC seen a compelling western. Whether riding a horse, knocking off bandits or playing through the storyline, Gun is an enjoyable experience. Though it still isn't as good as Outlaws.
The Movies - Will Wright of Sims' fame does it again. I've been playing through the simulation portion of the game and it is quite challenging. I intend to dabble with the actual moviemaker that allows you to create, script and direct your own movies that can be uploaded to the web. But it appears to be very time consuming, so we'll see.
The Matrix: The Path of Neo - Every Matrix game so far has been a dud in my books. Even the MMORPG was a snoozer. I have high hopes for this Matrix game that allows you to actually play as Neo through the entire storyline.
Peter Jackson's King King - The movie looks to be spectacular, but games of movies are usually the pits. I am enjoying the immersion created by this game as you are abandoned on the island where Kong is found. There is absolutely NOTHING like being pursued by a Tyranasaurus Rex, especially when he roars and the screen blurs. Pretty cool stuff.
As you can see, I have more than enough gaming goodness to take me through the long, cold winter. That is if it ever does get cold here.
