Groundhog Day? Not the movie, the holiday. (Thought I WILL be talking about the movie as I continue my series on The 15 Best Movies Ever).
Why talk about Groundhog Day today? Because from what I just learned, the great majority of you have no earthly idea what day it falls on!
Somehow, Mary and I got into a discussion about Groundhog Day and she asked me when it was? I said, "Seriously? You don't know when Groundhog Day is? Everybody knows when Groundhog Day is!" She guessed February 24th and I told her she was wrong. It is February 2nd.
I was aghast. How could anyone not know when Groundhog Day is?!?! She informed me that nobody (outside of Punxsutawney, PA) cares. I insisted that she was mistaken and I directed her to my office, where I promptly pulled out a phone book and began randomly dialing people to take a random survey.
Again, I was aghast. I was able to reach nine people. Two hung up on me. Two said they "weren't interested". The other five? Not ONE of them knew when Groundhog Day is! The closest one guessed February 1st, but the rest didn't know or were way off. One lady told me she was from Kansas and they celebrate it there in the fall!
I briefly educated all five of these people of the correct date and thanked them for their time. As for me, I am shocked and stunned. Perhaps my sample was too small.
How many of YOU knew that Groundhog Day was February 2nd? Be honest please...

LOL! The story about the lady who celebrates Groundhog day in the fall had me falling out of my chair, but honestly, I usually never know the exact date until I turn on the TV that morning and some dote in a top hat is sweating bullets over the possibility of a few more weeks of winter. Apparently, I am not alone in my view of the small significance of Groundhog day, but to you, it is of utmost importance, so hold your banner high- you are the frontman for the otherwize forgotten Groundhog!

LOL! Its not that I am so passionate about the holiday.. could really care less. But I thought EVERYONE knew when it was. Then again, if we were to poll the average Joe or Josephine on the street, how many could name the Vice President of the United States? I wonder...

Groundhog day. Ah yes! a movie starring Bill Murry I believe.
Over here in Blighty(the U.K.) the only thing we know about groundhog day is what we saw in the film. As for the date on which it falls?????
Still, I now know (thanks to you) that it it is 2nd February.
A fact for which I shall be eternally grateful
It's one of those things that will stick in my memory forever(God help me)
Nice little site.

What is there to say about groundhogs day. I never knew the date of which it fell but yet, i did not care until someone arose the fact that their birthday fell upon this very day. Does it really make a persons birthday more special becaue it coincides with a groundhogs awakening. The date is not important what is important is that we take charge. We should not let the groundhogs of america overrun us. Poping out of holes everywhere to get a glimpse of their shadow. Digging holes in our gardens, and eating other smaller creatures. So to this i propose a plan of action:
1. plug all holes
2. get the 2nd of Feburary abolished
3. destroy all knowledge of groundhogs day
With these three tasks complete we can be on our way to destroying the groundhog menace and the future of our children and our childrens children can once again be secure. They will never have to worry about the redicule of their peirs for not knowning the date of this cursed holiday.
So please help me to complete these tasks.

Hello, I just had to reply to this one. All my friends from HS and college love Groundhog's Day and celebrate it on the proper day (usually by renting the movie). So yes, there is hope in the suburbs of San Francisco, CA.
