It's a basic AdSense strategy.
One page. One topic. One group of nicely targeted ads.
But what if your website covers more than one topic? Suppose you have a blog that's about cars, for example, and occasionally you like to write about satellite radios or travel destinations. Is it enough to put an off-topic post on a separate page or should you put it on a whole different website?
You'll need two pieces of information to answer that question.
The first is the clickthrough rate for pages with posts on your unusual topic. If you usually write about cars and occasionally post about where you like to drive, but the clickthrough rate still remains the same across all your pages, you don't need to change a thing. Your users are enjoying the variety as much as they like the rest of the site. They're interested in those off-topic pieces too.
Just make sure that each of your different blog topics carries a different channel so you can track how popular they are.
If the clickthrough rate is a lot lower on those pages though, you'll need to know something that's much harder to measure: whether you have enough enthusiasm about that topic to write about it more than occasionally.
If you're only comfortable writing about driving destinations or satellite radios or whatever it may be once a month, it's not going to be worth the effort and expense of launching a new site. Not without bringing in other writers.
But that doesn't mean you should stop writing about that topic. Sure, you want your site to make money. And maybe a post on a different subject would bring you more ad clicks. But you also want to enjoy creating your site. If you get the urge to write about something different, give it a shot. Just know how much you're paying for it.
