I'm not a negative person.
Generally, I've got a smile on my face and a bounce in my step.
But the moment I got off the plane in Miami for Affiliate Summit, I felt like I needed a shower.
No offense intended to any of my subscribers or friends that live at the tip of Florida, but I found it to be just a notch below absolutely miserable.
The humidity is stifling.
The city feels filthy.
And the people are... well... different.
I sat at a sidewalk cafe on South Beach dripping sweat and watched people walk by.
Sure, most of them looked like regular folk.
But there was also enough bizarre and strange characters that I was wondering if there was something in the drinking water.
Fortunately, the conference was fantastic!
I got to meet some great people face-to-face.
Among the list was Kris Jones of Pepperjam, Shoemoney, Todd Crawford of One Network Direct, Joshua Sloan of 1and1 and Mike Glover of Kontera. Of course, I have a stack of business cards a mile high and there are too many names to mention. But suffice to say that I made some new friends and had a great time.
While at the show, myself and my associate Joel Ownby, managed to spread the word about The Next Internet Millionaire and TextCast Live. I'm very excited about both projects and can't wait to see how things unfold.
Bottom line...
Conference great!
Miami sucks.

its not that bad, most locals know to wear shorts and only come out during the evening in July/August...its just one of those things....
Summertime SOBE is for actually going to the beach and soaking up sun.
Miami sucks!

Hi!
Im from Miami but have lived in France for while. Just wanted to say that even the locals think its a little too hot at times.
I remember when I was living in Paris everyone looked the same. I love how South Beach has crazy homeless people next to rich folks. Thats part of its "charm"
Fortunately, I live on the beach and I wouldn't live anywhere else in Miami because its just not "postcard worthy"
Miami is a third world country of degenerates and genetic garbage with the culture of a McDonalds and education of Big Lots ad. People who disagree: we're talking about YOU.
Miami is dirty and filthy! I have been living here for the past 4 years due to school and I hate it. Besides going to the beach there is nothing great about Miami. People do not have any class, everybody is cuban and they refuse to learn English. People are aggressive and they have no idea what customer service stands for. You basically leave any store frustrated either because people do not understand you or because they are too lazy to assist you. If you start yelling back at them you might as well risk your life with Miami being the third most dangerous city in the US!! You constantly hear about murders and other violent crimes going on all over Miami! People are getting robbed and shot at bright day light at gas stations or supermarket parking lots! DONT MOVE TO MIAMI!!!
MIAMI IS GAY AND PEOPLE ARE FAKE AND ITS A GAYLORD CITY. ALL OF DADE COUNTY IS GAY.
This city is a complete wasteland. If you don't go to the beach or booze all the time there is NOTHING to do. No neighborhoods to walk around or discover new things from. Just the beach and the mainland. It's like prison. The people are horrendous too.
Miami is quite possibly the worst city on the planet! Joel, you just got a taste of why this city is bad, try living here. I can't even begin to tell you how atrocious the people are here or better yet the lack of consideration they have for their fellow human being. Miami should be roped off from the rest of the country and declared little South America!
Don't be calling Miami "a third world country of degenerates and genetic garbage with the culture of a McDonald's and education of Big Lots ad. People who disagree: we're talking about YOU." We are a melting pot of cultures glued to each other. Education might not be up to par but where is education up to par in the USA education isn't important in this country so dont talk shit about our education system OK. Richard not all people in Miami are gay OK so watch out with the "MIAMI IS GAY AND PEOPLE ARE FAKE AND ITS A GAYLORD CITY. ALL OF DADE COUNTY IS GAY" comment okay? We aren't SAN FRAN!
Some of the Miamihaters have a point...very little class and a lot of showing off. Many sugar daddies, les vos, Guy Lords, sloots, tricks, druggies, trash-people, dealers, developers and other criminals.
But, Miami also has a few museums, good water/electricity and relatively decent food, several good schools including UM, ok jobs, relatively easy and incomparably (to the usa) workloads, and a good mix of cultures from all around the World!
So when you take the good with the bad and only if you're not easily dissapointed, you might actually like Miami for what it is - a splatter of concrete that will be gone with the next hurricane a la Nuevo Orleans...
In general, Miami sucks--it has little in the way of cultural entertainment, few jobs, way too much crime, large gaps between the rich and the poor, and a largely uneducated populace. I will concede that it does have positive things such as the weather, and its mixture of cultures. But other than that, Miami is a crime infested problem area.
Just moved here, and completey agree - Miami sucks! The people are incredibly rude and inconsiderate, refuse or are unable to speak English, whenever you have an appointment you have to wait at least two hours to be seen, they do not hire anyone who does not speak Spanish, the traffic is terrible, the women are skanks battling over the few men here and people have no class. True, we get lots of sunshine here, but also lots of rain, lots of flies and other nasty bugs. True, there are beautiful beaches, but they are crowded with loud and obnoxious people or drug dealers. There are some nice tropical parks, but it takes hours to drive to one that is in a decent enough neighborhood so that you do not get robbed or raped while trying to take a walk.
The Everglades are the only tolerable area here, at least gators seem to have more class and consideration than the idiots living here.
Can't wait to leave in 2013!
for the people that hate Miami, there is so many other places that suck in the US.
Actually Miami is one of the only places where you don't have so many overweight ugly americans.... at least we can go to the beach and see good looking people instead of whales!
Miami is an evil place-- no two ways about it. If you have money and can avoid being around the general population maybe its tolerable --but even then the narcissism and Madoff approach to dealing with others so rooted in the average Miami-ite could be too much for even the hardest, lacking all naivete badass in the world.
The people are dysfunctional, incompetent, self absorbed, criminal, lacking all restraint and committed to being despicable shits every moment of their fucking lives. I pray every day that I can peace out of Miami. If you against all good judgment, find yourself in Miami, you too will be contributing to the library of distress churned out by people Miami has fucked over.
Been living in Miami for 18 years and I am cuban so I think I have a right to comment. YES, Miami is one forsaken place that needs to disappear from the face of the earth for all the before mentioned reasons. They are all true.
Look on the bright side. According to all the Global Warming models I've seen, Miami should be under water by the end of the century. One can only hope.
