I, Robot

Mary and I just got back from the theatre. There isn't much out there worth seeing, so we sat in for a viewing of I, Robot, with Will Smith.

irobot.jpgI have never read Isaac Asimov's both that inspired the film, so I cannot comment on whether or not it was true to the original. On it's own, the story was very average, with few surprises. The special effects were incredible. I just can't imagine how they pull some of this stuff off. But this was not a good vehicle for Will Smith. It just wasn't a film that demanded his wisecracks and off-the-cuff remarks. I thought the story was much darker and called for a more serious approach.

I did appreciate a key message, which discussed the concept of "purporse". I also applaud Hollywood for its portrayal of religion in this film. The one person who exhibited traditional faith was not held up as an object of scorn, as is so frequent in today's films.

Without spoiling the story for those who haven't seen it, I found there to be too many holes in the plot. I also counted way to many cliches. Top it off with an unsatisfying and predictable ending, and you've got a 6 out of 10 for this summer flick.

My advice? Rent it.
