I'm cancelling MSN!

Posted on September 13, 2003 07:10 PM by Joel Comm

I have absolutely HAD it with MSN (ie: Microsoft Network). I need a dial-up service for when I am on the road, so I decided to cancel my Earthlink service just over two years ago and I signed on for two years with MSN at Best Buy. They were offering a $200 store gift card to sign on, so I figured what the heck.

My two years is up and I am going to cancel. Here's why.

Several times I have gone to look up an access number for a different area code on MSN's site. At least 50% of the time, the site has been unable to look up a number in the database, returning an error and suggesting I contact customer support.

Last night, I did just that. I was on hold for 40 minutes before even speaking with a rep. By the time I did get someone to pick up the phone, it took her 25 minutes to get me an access number! TWENTY FIVE MINUTES to tell me an access number in area code 580!

For a company whose business is Internet access, I find it incredible that neither the web site nor telephone support could provide a ten-digit number in less than five minutes.

So, who do you suggest for diall-up access when I am away from home?

    Dear Joel,
I came across your mail, amid all the crap enclosed in my mailbox. I wish I had a answer for your problems with MSN but I have WEBTV and and we are the bottom-feeders of the internet. I do not understand why, if I am WEBTV, I see MSN rolling around my screen, when I am not connected??!! There is no where to go any more (earthlink sucks) but I am forever stuck knee-deep in cement with Web-Tv. Just thought I would comment.
Love you column and will from now on be fathful reader.

The very best of luck to you in your quest. You will need it......

    Howdy Joel,

I've been enjoying your site for many moons now; keep up the GREAT work! I, too, have been abused by MSN due to my spouse being reeled into a similar offer from Best Buy upon a PC purchase from there. After WAY too many negative incidences with MSN, the contract (and our patronage) finally came to its end. We're now with a competitive dial up provider and, after a bumpy start, are once again cruising the internet highways without fail. "Happy trails to you..."
    Sincerely,
    R.C.Murawski

I used to belong to MSN also, but, for me, it was a question of too much money for too little quality.... I am now with Hawk communications http://www.hawkcommunications.com/ The price is right & it has a database for all the US listed on-site. Wouldn't go any other way!

MSN is terrible. Somehow they forgot my password and now it won't let me log on. Whenever I call to cancel they berate me with questions like, "Why are you cancelling?" I feel like saying, "Because your service sucks!" But, I haven't been able to log onto MSN for over a month and still they charged me $43.90 for two months of service that I wasn't even able to use. I'm calling today to cancel and I hope they have a good explanation for why they stole $44 from me.

MSN Dial UP SUCKS! They constantly disconnect you from their service - 22 attempts at 4 different times of the day to get 10 minutes of web time. Inept "Tech" can only gook up you computer with MSN Dial Up #1 or #2 which only caused conflicts on your system. This has been going on for a month. I think they do this on purpose so you will "upgrade" to high speed. If I do upgrade to high speed , it will absolutely not be with MSN!

As a follow up, I have signed up with Earthlink once again for my on-the-road dialup needs. They offer a free download accelerator which compresses images to make web browsing faster. So far I am pleased with the service, which I only use on rare occasions anyhow.

If you are not able to check e-mails in MSN. Log in to Hotmail using your internet explorer and use your MSN address. If you see your e-mails there and your MSN version is 9.0 and above press ctrl+shift+f9 on the keyboard and re-sign in that should work!!!!

HELP.... I am searching and surfing... just trying to find WHERE I go to cancel my MSN!! Was hoping the answer was here, but it's not. Sooo, off I go searching again. Once you have it, perhaps you can't stop it? Of course, I had this problem years ago with another service.. easy to sign on, impossible to sign off.

So off I go.. wish me luck!!!

I've had MSN dialup for many years. But about two years ago I stopped using it. Out of laziness I didn't cancel it for the longest time. Made a half hearted attempt, but couldn't figure out how to. SO then! I began to seriously try to cancel, and I keep getting messages that I have to call a number. Every time I call I stay on hold for 30 minutes before finally giving up! So I cancelled the credit card that the pmts were made to. So now I keep getting messsages about how much I'm going to owe when I update that card! HAH!!

After much searching, I finally located the Cancellations phone number for MSN (1-800-386-5550). However, when I called it, all I got was a useless phone menu and no live operators. To cancel, I instead had to call Sales (1-877-564-6676) then get transferred to Customer Support, then finally to Cancellations, which turned out to have the same number as what I tried the first time, except you actually get a person when you're transferred.

Then I discovered that I had an "outstanding balance" of $21.95 that I would be billed for the month after I canceled. Apparently even your credit card expiring doesn't stop MSN from adding to your bills, you have to physically call them (not email or use a handy online interface) and follow a tortuous trail through their phone system before you can actually cancel.

If you value your well-being, don't sign up for MSN.
