I remember a story on the cover of Time magazine about ten years ago. It had the following headline which was just a tremendous shocker to me. It said...
"Men and Women Are Different"
The story went on to speak various studies that had shown there were more differences between men and women than just our reproductive organs.
I don't know about you, but I laughed at this story and my thoughts were very appropriately along the lines of "no duh".
Well, a headline has hit the news today which evokes the same response.
From UCLA, an absolutely liberal university, comes this headline.
"Media Bias Is Real, Finds UCLA Political Scientist"
The story begins...
While the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal is conservative, the newspaper's news pages are liberal, even more liberal than The New York Times. The Drudge Report may have a right-wing reputation, but it leans left. Coverage by public television and radio is conservative compared to the rest of the mainstream media. Meanwhile, almost all major media outlets tilt to the left.These are just a few of the surprising findings from a UCLA-led study, which is believed to be the first successful attempt at objectively quantifying bias in a range of media outlets and ranking them accordingly.
"I suspected that many media outlets would tilt to the left because surveys have shown that reporters tend to vote more Democrat than Republican," said Tim Groseclose, a UCLA political scientist and the study's lead author. "But I was surprised at just how pronounced the distinctions are."
"Overall, the major media outlets are quite moderate compared to members of Congress, but even so, there is a quantifiable and significant bias in that nearly all of them lean to the left," said co‑author Jeffrey Milyo, University of Missouri economist and public policy scholar.
Wow. Huge shocker. Someone get the smelling salts.
Of course the mainstream media is tilted to the left, and their bias is stunningly obvious to anyone who has eyes and ears (with the exception of those in deep denial). Since there are many Americans who are completely out of touch with the political scene, they depend on the media to tell them what to think and who to vote for. This explains why John Kerry and Al Gore were able to get as many votes as they did. If the media was fair and actually reported the news without bias, neither one of those candidates would even have remotely been a challenge to Dubya in 2000 or 2004.
But the fact is that the cards are stacked against conservatives. This also explains why Fox News is crushing CNN and MSNBC. For the minority of Americans who DO watch the news, more and more are disgusted by the blatant bias of the other networks.
Anyhow, it is refreshing to see this story.
