Mel Gibson's continuing story...

Posted on August 15, 2003 11:54 AM by Joel Comm

I am completely dumbfounded by the heat that Mel Gibson is catching for his film, The Passion. In an age where "tolerance" is preached as a virtue and the First Amendment is wielded as the rationalization for every kind of aberrant behavior, I am amazed at how intolerant and oppressive some people are being in regard to Mel's upcoming movie.

I've covered this some, here and here, but this latest news chaps my hide.

passion1.jpgThe man has the right to make a movie about whatever he wants, whenever he wants and however he wants. People can decide to see it or not see it based on its own merits. But no, the thought police won't have any of it. It reeks of the weaknesses in their arguments and reasoning. People who fear live it out by attempting to silence others.

Don't get me wrong. I am Jewish through and through. It runs as much through my blood as it does those who would seek to stifle Mr. Gibson's film. But what this group of Jews is doing is EXACTLY what our ancestors did to Yeshua (Jesus) as portrayed in the Gospels, and thus, in the film! Oh, the irony of it all.

The Jewish leaders in Jesus' day did not like what He was saying. They refused to acknowledge His Messiahship, as many still do today, and they sought to kill Him! How are the Jews who are trying to put a gag on Mel Gibson any different? They aren't. They are full of spiritual pride and they continue to reject their Messiah. Fortunately, while we may not know how this movie will play out, we DO know how the story ends. One day, EVERY knee shall bow before our Lord.

For my Jewish brothers and sisters who are stuck in their Jewishness for no other reason than they were "born that way" or because they have bought into the blatant lie that Christians were responsible for the holocaust, may I suggest you open your heart to the truth?

  1. Melany Says:

I enjoyed reading your comments per "The Passion". There are many people that call themselves Christians, I among them, but many years ago I wondered if I would have the courage to stand up for my beliefs in a situation such as the holocaust. It's very easy to say that it was wrong, but not easy to do the right thing when you know you could be killed for it. Many Christians did just that. It wasn't Christians that allowed the killing, merely people that were not brave enough to stand in the way. However, there were many that did their best behind the scenes, much as the underground railroad here in the US before the Civil War.

I'm probably a coward. I would like to think I would do what is right, but having never been tested, I just don't know...

  2. Victoria Says:

    looking forward to the movie.

  3. Joel Thomas Says:

The mistake Mel Gibson made was that he was unwilling to denounce his father's view that the holocaust didn't happen. Now, children aren't responsible for what their parents say, true -- but Gibson knows that without his own fame, no one would know who his father is. Every time Mel Gibson speaks about his film, he should loudly proclaim for all to hear that the holocaust did indeed happen.

Christians (including me) need to understand and accept that for many centuries, the faith got perverted to the extent that Christianity blamed ALL Jews for Christ's death.

Now, as to those messianic Jews who are self-righteous and judgmental, believing that non-Christian Jews are going to hell, then I would wonder if self-loathing isn't the biggest part of their "faith."

The other day in church, a man said, "how tragic it is that Jews who suffered so terribly under Hitler, starving or being gassed now have to suffer eternally in hell because they didn't accept Christ." Well, MY God and MY Christ have taught me that we can't completely fathom the reconciling ways of Jesus. We pampered, spoiled folks will, when we get to heaven, be astounded at the breadth of God's saving grace.

I am thrilled that my favorite actor is wanting to do a movie to glorify Jesus Christ. I am a christian and have been for 30 yrs and I'm proud of Mel for what he's doing. God bless you Mel!

  5. sam Says:

I'm not Christian or Jewish, but all I see is that the ADL is just trying to stifle anything they can. Personally, I think Mr. Gibson has every right and should be encouraged to pursue the release of this film. Nowadays throughout europe and even places here in the states, jews are becoming more targeted for many reasons by many groups, I think that action against this movie will sort of take away a sense of credibility Jews have when they cite anti-semitism. And that is probably the real bad news.

    Modern Day Hero

In choosing a modern day hero, I look for a person who is strong in his faith, honorable,

courageous, and loyal. Mel Gibson appears to represent each of these qualities by living morally

in an immoral world. Therefore, I consider him to be a suitable hero.

First of all, as a Catholic, Mel Gibson is extremely devoted to his faith, standing up to

anyone who wishes to scrutinize him with censorious comments. Once as a teenager, nearly

beaten to the point of death, Mel Gibson was left with his face literally crushed. Coming from a

low income family, his parents were unable to pay for plastic surgery to repair the damage.

Therefore, Mel Gibson was left with an abnormally monstrous appearance. However, with the

aid and consoling of a priest from a nearby church, he was able to receive help. His face was

inconceivably returned to its original condition through the assistance of a charitable plastic

surgeon, (a friend of the priest.) From that point on, Gibson vowed to remain loyal to the faith.

Now he lives by the teachings of Catholicism and represents the essence of what religion is all

about: God and family. Him and his wife have been married for over twenty years and are

raising seven children. In interviews, Gibson affirms his loyalty to his family by making it clear

that they are everything to him. Although many lustful women express passionate feelings for

him, he has not yet strayed from his wife. For any Hollywood movie star this is an amazing

    accomplishment.

Second, Mel Gibson is directing a new movie entitled “The Passion,” a realistic account

of the suffering, sacrificial death of Jesus. Those who are against the public expression of one’s

religious beliefs have almost instantly “black-listed” Mel Gibson and are attempting to bring his

movie’s premier to a permanent halt. This large group of modern “Madeline O’Hares” has taken

its opposition as far as to pry into Gibson’s private life so extremely as to attain his banking

records, information regarding business associates, family members, friends, and even charities

that he supports in order to bring any possible evidence against him to influence people to strike

against his movie. Through all of this he remains strong and determined to carry-out what he

feels is right: producing the movie which will teach viewers the true story about Jesus and the

sacrifice He made for…everyone! Although others speak poorly of him, Gibson remains

honorable and maintains a very classy, Christian attitude by not degrading himself to that level

and forgiving them for the harassment which he continues to endure. With half the population, (it

seems,) against him, Mel Gibson plans on producing this movie so people can know that Jesus

did exist and know that He did suffer for all of us. Those who are willing to testify for their faiths

are often belittled, making this is a very courageous act by Mel Gibson. He knew people would

be against him during the production of this movie but is withstanding the verbal slaughter for

    his beliefs.

Finally, “The Passion” is a powerful work of art. Gibson poured his spirit and knowledge

of Christ into his work. Mel Gibson is filled with the Holy Spirit which gives him the

knowledge and honor to give this movie the power to influence those involved in its

production. Unusual events have been taking place on the movie set, such as people being healed

from certain diseases, sight and hearing being restored, and a daughter of one of the crew

members being cured of epilepsy. Those are simply a few examples. God himself must have

bestowed upon this man the special power to create such an influential, powerful piece of work.

It is only through his work that these miracles are taking place. To those people who are being

healed, I have no ambivalence that they perceive him as a hero. Many atheists who are working

on the set have become believers in Christ, as well. Having the ability to restore someone’s soul

in that way by showing them the truth is, on its own, a “special” power.

In conclusion, Mel Gibson has proven to be courageous, honorable, reverent to his

faith, and loyal to his family. Gibson is rare in today’s world, especially in Hollywood. In his

own way he is a crusader for his faith by remaining strong against all slanders, and is courageous

enough to withstand all temptation which would cause him to betray his family and beliefs.

Others should model themselves after Mel Gibson’s example. Mel Gibson is a hero!

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. Psalm 23:1

This is a commentary by DAVID LIMBAUGH about Mel Gibson's very controversial movie regarding Christ's crucifixion. It's very worth reading. MEL GIBSON'S passion for "THE PASSION"

How ironic that when a movie producer takes artistic license with historical events, he is lionized as artistic, creative and brilliant, but when another takes special care to be true to the real-life story, he is vilified. Actor-producer Mel Gibson is discovering these truths the hard way as he is having difficulty finding a United States studio or distributor for his upcoming film, "The Passion," which depicts the last 12 hours of the life of Jesus Christ.

Gibson co-wrote the script and financed, directed and produced the movie. For the script, he and his co-author relied on the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, as well as the diaries of St. Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824) and Mary of Agreda's "The City of God." Gibson doesn't want this to be like other sterilized religious epics. "I'm trying to access the story on a very personal level and trying to be very real about it." So committed to realistically portraying what many would consider the most important half-day in the history of the universe, Gibson even shot the film in the Aramaic language of the period.

In response to objections that viewers will not be able to understand that language, Gibson said, "Hopefully, I'll be able to transcend the language barriers with my visual storytelling; if I fail, I fail, but at least it'll be a monumental failure."

To further insure the accuracy of the work, Gibson has enlisted the counsel of pastors and theologians, and has received rave reviews. Don Hodel, president of Focus on the Family, said, "I was very impressed. The movie is historically and theologically accurate." Ted Haggard, pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., and president of the National Evangelical Association, glowed: "It conveys, more accurately than any other film, who Jesus was." Gibson is a devout Christian.

From Gibson's perspective, this movie is not about Mel Gibson. It's bigger than he is. "I'm not a preacher, and I'm not a pastor," he said. "But I really feel my career was leading me to make this. The Holy Ghost was working through me on this film, and I was just directing traffic. I hope the film has the power to evangelize."

Even before the release of the movie, scheduled for March 2004, Gibson is getting his wish. "Everyone who worked on this movie was changed. There were agnostics and Muslims on set converting to Christianity...[and] people being healed of diseases." Gibson wants people to understand through the movie, if they don't already, the incalculable influence Christ has had on the world. And he grasps that Christ is controversial precisely because of WHO HE IS - GOD incarnate. "And that's the point of my film really, to show all that turmoil around him politically and with religious leaders and the people, all because He is Who He is."

Gibson is beginning to experience first hand just how controversial Christ is. Critics have not only speciously challenged the movie's authenticity, but have charged that it is disparaging to Jews, which Gibson vehemently denies. "This is not a Christian vs. Jewish thing. '[Jesus] came into the world, and it knew him not.' Looking at Christ's crucifixion, I look first at my own culpability in that." Jesuit Father William J. Fulco, who translated the script into Aramaic and Latin, said he saw no hint of anti-Semitism in the movie. Fulco added, "I would be aghast at any suggestion that Mel Gibson is anti-Semitic."

Nevertheless, certain groups and some in the mainstream press have been very critical of Gibson's "Passion." The New York Post's Andrea Peyser chided him: "There is still time, Mel, to tell the truth." Boston Glove columnist James Carroll denounced Gibson's literal reading of the biblical accounts. "Even a faithful repetition of the Gospel stories of the death of Jesus can do damage exactly because those sacred texts themselves carry the virus of Jew hatred," wrote Carroll.

A group of Jewish and Christian academics has issued an 18-page report slamming all aspects of the film, including its undue emphasis on Christ's passion rather than "a broader vision." The report disapproves of the movie's treatment of Christ's passion as historical fact.

The moral is that if you want the popular culture to laud your work on Christ, make sure it either depicts Him as a homosexual or as an everyday sinner with no particular redeeming value (literally). In our anti-Christian culture, the blasphemous "The Last Temptation of Christ" is celebrated, and "The Passion" is condemned. But if this movie continues to affect people the way it is now, no amount of cultural opposition will suppress its force and its positive impact on lives everywhere.

Mel Gibson is a model of faith and courage. Please copy this and send it on to all your friends to let them know about this film so that we'll all go see it when it comes out.

  8. James W. Zimmer Says:

What ”The Passion” means to me:

In my 20’s I was an avid soldier of Christ. I would go to daily mass, speak at retreats and organize and lead prayer groups. In my early 30’s I got married and then divorced. As a result of my divorce my faith has been substantially weakened. I have lost my confidence in God and struggle with alcohol and nicotine. So, to see a man like Mel Gibson put everything he has on the line and to embrace God’s call is extremely inspiring.

I can’t wait to see the film. I’m going to prepare myself mentally and spiritually for weeks prior to the movie. I’m going to set in that theater as if I am a witness 2000 years ago. My hope is to emerge healed and energized to once again pick up my cross and carry it to Calgary without ever turning back.
I’m sure I won’t be alone, and it is for that reason that Mel risks it all. Even as I sputter with my week faith, I pray that Mel’s will stay strong.

God Bless Mel Gibson and his family for their extreme sacrifice, it will be eternally rewarded!

  9. Michele Peruzzi Says:

"The Passion of the Christ " will be a special
meditation sent our way. It won't be anything
    less than that.

If people come to mock the film or to find
fault with it, then they would be missing the
artistic value of the film. We will all soon find out, God willing. There may even be more
world changes to add to the importance of
the film's impact and message. Many, many
people in the world are discontented,
spiritually starved, and looking for something
to give them life and hope. This film could
    point the way.

Jesus Christ cannot be lumped together with
any other person or groups of person's
who were great spiritual leaders. And there
are some. But they are not Jesus, and they
did not offer themselves to God the Father
as a perfect and "willing" sacrifice.

That was Jesus. That's who He is. No one
can steal that away from Him.

The Passion...should be able to drive that
reality to the center of the human heart.

If a veil remains over peoples' eyes, then
that is well known to God and part of His
    plan.

    Sounds good to me.

  10. Rev. Brother Louis Tryon Says:

Dear Friends: Praised be Jesus Christ. I am a Traditional Franciscan Friar, a Brother. No where in that film is anything anti-semitic...The jews did indeed call for Our Lord's death and gave the Roman's power to crucify the Son of God..Our dear Lord willingly laid down His Life..He said in the Holy Scripture: "No man has power to take my life, I lay it down willingly." It is our SINS THAT DAILY RECRUCIFY THE SON OF GOD AFRESH..IT IS OUR SINS THAT BROUGHT HIM TO THE CROSS. Today, folks are trying to revise history, and isn't it interesting those accusing Mr. Gibson of anti-semitism are the catholic, jewish, and protestant "scripture scholars" who deny the very reality , that say Christ didn't really die on the cross, that He was not Divine, He did not rise from the dead, etc. etc. etc. NO, while we all should decry anti-semitism, and we do, this is not the agenda of those against this film...It is because this film shows through graphic portrayal of the brutality, the gore, the blood, what actually happened to the God-Man that these liberals: jewish, catholic, and protestant are afraid of: Maybe they are afraid the film might actually cause by the power of the Holy Ghost all catholics and protestants to a great renewal and conversion, and God forbid, it might even convert moslems and Jews...While there may be a danger of anti-semitism, the majority of folk in the world have been made aware of the holocaust...thousands of Jews were saved by monks and nuns of my order alone in Italy...this movie will not be the cause of anti-semitism..no, but I pray that this movie converts all, including Jews to conversion to Jesus Christ..and in today's catholic and protestant churches, that is anathama..In St. Paul's day..he was a converted jew, remember, after he was blinded on the road to Damascus, he always preached Jesus to the jews, he was arrested over 2O times...read his missionary journals, and all of the apostles preached Jesus to the Jews and the gentiles...Today's catholic church say: no preach to Jews...and if one can be saved in Judaism...then why did Christ come down to this earth, if one could be saved in Judaism as the present Vatican II church teaches???? If one could be saved in Bhuddism, Judaism, the world religons of 2,OOO years ago..then why would Christ come upon the scene and proclaim: "I am the way, the truth, and the life..no one comes to the Father, except by ME." ?? We abhor anti-semitism, and we have jewish friends of our Order, and we have shared the Gospel with them ....it seems to me the movie has nothing to do with the detractors are saying....the revisionists and reformers of all faiths today are preparing this world for a one world church, one world government and to prepare that structure for the coming of the Anti-Christ...strange folk always say traditional catholics are "fundamentalists" If that is so...the whole Catholic Church was FUNDAMENTALIST FOR ALMOST 2,OOO years until the Second Vatican Countil (Vat. II) The critics are not afraid of anti-semitism...THEY ARE AFRAID OF A GREATER EVIL IN THEIR EYES; POSSIBLY THE CONVERSION OF MUSLIMS, JEWS, AND FALSE RELIGIONS to Jesus Christ..May we always show love to all, allowing no harm to anyone, yet always proclaiming there is only one way to Heaven...It is through Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. Our love in Christ to all: jews, muslims, etc...come unto Christ. In Jesus, Mary, St. Joseph, and all the Saints..

  11. Michele Peruzzi Says:

The Gospels cannot be said to be politically
correct. But they are the truth. Mel promises
the truth in "The Passion of The Christ."

From the Gospel narratives, it seems that
Jesus walked a politically incorrect life.
    You betcha.

Try to do that today and you'll pay highly for it.
Which is kind of the idea in true Christianity.

Veils still cover the spiritual eyes of many.
There are even blindspots in the sight of
believers in Christ. We are supposed to be
teachable––young and old alike. No one ever
knows it all. I've come to accept mysteries
    for what they are—mysteries.

So, if the Catholic Church is "not all that,"
whether pre- or post Vatican II, I am confident
of one thing––He knows how to fix it.
He also knows how to expose the truth. All in
    good time.

    I don't feel like being politically correct—ever.
I think it's more important to try to present
Jesus as He is—risen, victorious, Second
Person of the Godhead. The Way is the
narrow way. I really wonder if Americans today
have come to grips with that. We need to hold
    a mission amongst ourselves. Everybody
should drop their agendas at the door and
allow the Holy Spirit to move any way He so desires. Trouble is, in the past, many have
turned a blind eye and deaf ear to any attempt by the Spirit to move us out of comfortable
    piosity. Yeah, you betcha.

I'm ready for Vatican III. Maybe a fresh
invocation of the Holy Spirit and a council
willing to be moved by the Spirit can clean up
the mess from the inside out.

    I'm a radical, spirit-filled, pre-Vatican II, devoted-to-the-Eucharist, Holy-Rolling,
    speaks-in-tongues kind of Roman Catholic.

Politically correct? No. But oh so satisfying.

Jesus meets you where you are. There's
    holy hope for us all.

  12. greg Says:

I'm looking forward to the movie.
I think all the supposed anti-semitism nonsense is ridiculous.
The gospel clearly points out that the Jewish Religious leaders had Christ arrested and brought before Pontis Pilate.
However Christ was a Jewish Rabbi often referred to as "teacher" by even his enemies. The majority of his followers were Jews and the people who shouted "Hossana in the Highest" during Christ's triumphal entry were also Jews.

For those who would feel anomosity towards modern day Jew leaders for the sins of those who lived nearly 2000 years ago--- you are fools.

Ultimately we all share an equal blame for his death upon the cross. It is the sin of every human being that Christ is willing to pay the price for. If we will only repent and turn to Him.
Modern Jewish leaders are overly concerned though history gives them just cause to be.
I pray that the vast majority of Americans are smart enough to know if they want to be angry at the Jewish Religious leaders for the death of the messiah, they need to be angry with people who died over 1900 years ago.
I'm glad Mel had the courage and zeal to make this movie.
    PS
To the person who downed the self righteous Messianic Jews--- you are mistaken to malign our dear brothers in Christ because of a few bad apples. Remember what it says in the book of James about our tongues
God Bless you all and God Bless and use this movie!

I recently saw “The Passion of the Christ”, and I want to share how awesome I thought this movie was. It showed how much Jesus loved us, to actually die on the cross for us. I have never cried so much watching a movie. As a teenager I would have never realized what Jesus did to rid us of our sins. I was never really took church or anything of the sort seriously. But after this movie, I’m a changed person. My mom bought me a new bible. I want to go to church more and read the bible. I’m not surprised to read the negative comments and how people twist what the movie is truly about because, hey, critics are going to be critics. What you saw in the movie was written in the bible. People make a big deal about the violence and gore, but it’s what really happened. Without showing all of the torture and the pain, I don’t think I really would have been able to feel his pain and understand what he really went through. Thumbs up to Mel Gibson, and Jim Caviezel -what a great actor (and a great director =] )

  14. Stephanie Says:

Thank you Mel for this movie. We all need to see this movie, faith or no faith, it was so incredible. James Caviezel did such an incredible job, one can only imagine how his parents felt watching this movie of such magnitude and seeing their son portraying our savior. I am also from WA state, and James is an incredible actor. It must have taken months apon months to learn the language.
I pray that those who have seen the movie and haven't received Christ, that they will. How could they not, what Christ did for all of us. He suffered greatly so that we may live.
Thank you Mel, James, and all the actors and actresses that made this movie possible, for us to see, and for our hearts to feel the enormous love Christ has for all of us. God Bless all of you.

    Today is Sept. 12, 2004.
I saw the film at the first showing in New York City. There was commotion and camera coverage
after the film. Outside, an offended Jewish Rabbi spoke to a news reporter. Couldn't hear a thing he said. But he had quite a long face.
His supporters were smiling and taking pictures.
When I tried conversing with one man, he just
talked at me instead of to me and claimed to know
that the gospels all contradict each other
and seemed to get off on that. Let's just say
that he did not want to understand the
suffering or the blood sacrifice of Jesus.

He was rude and his chin was set against me.
The movie so offended their group that that very scene could be a reminder of what it was like 2000
    years ago.

Nothing's changed. Jesus is still despised.
He is still politically incorrect. Controversial.
One drop of his blood is enough to enrage the opposing camp. People still resist the truth,
thinking that they own the story.

Mel Gibson should be rejoicing for the criticism
he's taking. His redemption is drawing near.

All that aside, the film is deep and heavy.
As it should be. What Jesus did for us was not
too extreme. It was just right.

  17. Robert Says:

I just came upon this page researching the urban legend about Mel Gibson's plastic surgery, which seems to be a far-fetched tale that is completely false that tries to explain Mel's beliefs. After reading through the comments on this page, I am left wondering "why must people distort the facts of a situation to support their point of view. I am neither Christian nor Jew, in fact I am agnostic, but I do feel a sense of spirituality. I believe in religious freedom for ALL, and see that it is all too common in our society to try to force one to believe another's religion. I do not believe this is an anti-Christian world, as one person here describes. In fact, Christians have soetimes done just as much persecuting of other faiths as they clam have been done to theirs. Mel Gibson had EVERY RIGHT to produce a movie of his point of view, and the controversy that surrounds it seems ridiculuos. I saw the movie as an AGNOSTIC and it was very powerful and moving to me. It is a good story, and an important lesson to people of ALL walks of life. I cried in the theater, even though I do not believe in Christ the Messiah. I view Christ as a wonderful, beautiful man who wanted to unite the world in love. He may or may not be God's son, but he deserves to be respected and loved for what he tried to do. The Jews did not kill him - a group of small minded people who wanted to force everyone to believ their truth killed him. Much the same hypocrisy exists today throughout all people and all religions. Most just cannot stand the fact that they might not be right in their view of the world. I think that the real UNIVERSAL TRUTH is much more complex, much bigger, and much more wonderful than any human being can even attempt to fathom. If their is a God, that entity is more more incredible that anything we could possibly imagine. (For any small minded Christains or others who choose to chastise me for being an agnostic, that is a compliment to any God that might exist.) Perhaps there will come a day when ALL people of ALL religions may come together with one voice, the voice of LOVE, to make this world a better place. Until then, I fear that people like Mel may always be ridiculed for speaking their version of truth. May we all learn to accept our differences and respect each other and our planet.

  18. Bill Says:

Mel Gibson stated to New Yorker reporter and is in the Sept 15 issue 2003 that if you are not a Catholic you will go to hell. Yet he courted the protestant church to promote his movie in which he made hundreds of millions. I would not consider him a Christian in the true sense of the word.

  20. Warren Says:

Mel has been my favorite actor and roll model for as long as I can remember. I embrace the fact that he is so loyal to God.
God gave Mel many great gifts and talents and Mel returns the favor by using his celebrity image to influence and touch as many people as he can. Every celebrity should do the same. Infact, this is what God wants from all of us. All Celebrities have the envious opportunity to make a big difference in this anti-Christ world by reaching out to as many people as they possibly can, but No, they much rather follow the easy road.

It just drives me crazy to see that so many celebrities are into this Scientology thing, example: Tom Cruise.
Come on, doing and saying what everybody wants to see and here is not courageous. Putting your career on the line like Mel has to show his beliefs is courageous. Here’s my interpretation of ‘’Scientology’’, (Live life to the fullest, step on people that hold you back, and make as much money as you can) Little do they know, money is probably good on earth but it isn’t going to get them anywhere in heaven.

Mel is a brilliant man, he is wealthy on earth and will be wealthy in heaven, he’s working for the right Boss, GOD, not the little ‘’devil’’.

My goal is to do as Mel is doing. One day, I‘ll be one of the few celebs that let God work through me to help as many people as I can. God has planted in me the same seed that he planted in Mel, the dream to become known world wide, so that I can save as many people (Gods children) as I can.
