Red River, Day 5

Posted on July 24, 2003 10:45 PM by Joel Comm

What a busy day! Jenna and I started the day with a one-hour horseback ride. She rode Questa and I rode Buck. They took us 600 feet up the mountain on a sometimes precarious trail. It was a great deal of fun.

Socrates got to meet one of the horses as well. He wanted to see them until he got up close. He must have been thinking, "That's the biggest dog I've ever seen!"

Afterwards, we went back to the room to collect Mary and Zach. They were busy playing an intense hand of Gin Rummy. We went to the red chairlift and rode it to the top of the mountain. It was 30 minutes going up and 30 minutes going down. It was a beautiful day and the view was magnificent. We had our photo taken at the top.

We enjoyed lunch at the top of the mountain, but the clouds started rolling in, so we thought it would be best to go back down before the afternoon rain hit.

We drove past Questa to the Red River Fish Hatchery, the largest hatchery in New Mexico. There wasn't alot to see, but the kids enjoyed feeding the rainbow trout.

After a brief nap, we went to dinner at Sundance, a mexican food establishment. It came highly recommended by several locals, and I was told they accepted reservations. I called ahead for 6 pm reservations and was very glad that I did! We arrived on time and there was a line of people in the waiting area. We walked up to the hostess and were seated immediately. The food was very good and now I heartily recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

After dinner, Mary and I watched The Amazing Race 4 on TV. I then decided to take a walk before it got dark. Red River is not very big. I walked from one end of town to the other and back again in 45 minutes.

We've got two more full days in Red River. I'm not sure what we'll do the remaining days, but I'm sure we'll think of something.
