What’s the most popular question asked when you meet someone for the first time? After the handshake and pleasantries of the name exchange are complete, it is most common for one person to ask this of the other…
“So, what do YOU do?”
The question is common, yet the answers that proceed forth can be as unique as snowflakes.
You see, I believe that every single person on the face of the earth is uniquely gifted with passions, talents, skills, abilities and personality. Like snowflakes, there are no two alike.
And if that’s true, it means that each person is designed to bring unique value to the world around them.
Whether you are a chemistry teacher, residential architect, fiction author, day-care worker, nuclear physicist, construction worker, veterinarian, insurance rep, department store clerk, financial advisor or any of the other hundreds of occupations in the marketplace, in all likelihood you seek to excel at what you do.
AND, even though there may be others who have similar jobs, I can just about guarantee that you bring a unique aspect, original ideas, and a different angle than anyone else who does what you do.
This vocation, life-calling or giftedness is what drives you, motivates you and makes you get up in the morning.
Perhaps you are working a j.o.b. and aren’t able to do what you REALLY want to do full-time. That doesn’t mean you won’t someday, and it doesn’t mean that you don’t bring value to others where you are right here and now. It just means you are on the journey, just like the rest of us.
What is that thing that makes you tick?
As I travel the world and speak to people, I have the opportunity to sense the destiny that is within each and every person. I understand the depth of their understanding when they share their expertise. And I feel the excitement when they share their passions.
While the “gurus”, best-selling authors and famous personalities of our time inspire and equip many with their expertise, I am convinced that the greatest assets amongst us are those just next door. As we discover the driving passions and everyday efforts of the people around us who may not be publicly celebrated, we begin to understand that the real geniuses are continually in our midst… even next door.
In fact, when you embrace your own giftedness that fuels your passions, talents, skills and abilities, you are able to celebrate the genius within yourself! That’s no small thing, because you are designed to share yourself and the value you bring with the world around you.
It may be local, making a difference in your community. Your efforts may reach to your state or your region. Your work may inspire a nation. Or you may have a global impact through what you do.
Regardless, what you do is important because it comes from who you are. And who you are is special because there is no one like you.
On October 15, 2013, I’ll be releasing my new book titled “So, What Do YOU Do? Discovering the Genius Next Door with One Simple Question”. I’m very excited about this book as it provides me with the opportunity to introduce you to forty-six “geniuses” from around the United States. These are people who are passionate about what they do and seek to bring value to the world around them through their daily lives.
I’ll be sharing more about the book with you as release date approaches, but right now I’d really like to focus on YOU.
Do you have enough clarity that you can tell someone the impact you make in other’s lives without going on and on? Are you able to focus on the benefit you bring rather than the tasks your do?
If I were to meet you at an event and asked you one simple question, “So What Do YOU Do?”, what would you one-sentence answer be?
Please use the comments field below to share you answer. I look forward to reading your answer, and I think it will be interesting to see the variety of answers from all the people who will participate.
I will be giving away an autographed copy of So What Do You Do to one random person who comments below, so let’s hear it!
So, what do YOU do?
