What is the secret to making money online?
What strategy has been known to be effective for the vast majority of people who faithfully implement it?
What is the one thing that you are fully equipped to do RIGHT NOW without any further training?
Many in the Internet marketing and online business space won't tell you this. They don't want you to know.
But I'm about to spill the beans... to show my hand... to tell all.
And some people will not like it.
No, the secret is not "the law of attraction." That is just old rehashed positive thinking taken to a ludicrous extreme. Sorry, but "The Universe" is not at your beck and call. Did the author of The Secret, Rhonda Byrne, "attract" a lawsuit because she misused the uiniverse?
Just praying for riches is not the answer either. Those who preach the prosperity gospel (riches and great health for all) are not in touch with reality. They twist scripture to "tickle the ears" of their flock and to suit their own needs. THEY are the ones that become rich at the expense of the ones they are supposed to be helping. Yes, I am talking to you, you, and you.
(Note: I am not saying God doesn't bless people financially. I'm just saying that people who preach that He wants us all to be rich are wolves in sheeps clothing. But that's a different blog entry.)
And good luck with the lottery. It's true that your odds of getting struck by lightning are approximately ten to forty times greater than your chances of winning a big state lottery! It's fun to drop a few bucks on lady luck, but I wouldn't put any eggs in that basket.
The secret to getting rich is that there IS no secret.
There is, however, a commonality that rich people have which can give us a clue to how they did it.
It's called WORK.
Sure, there is the occasional overnight success. It's true in the entertainment industry and in business. And there are also those who are rich due to inheritance. Unless you've got a rich Uncle Vinny set to leave you ten million dollars I think it's safe to move past that option.
The truth is that most wealthy people got there because they had a dream, believed in that dream, equipped themselves to carry out their vision and ACTED on their dream without ceasing.
You could go down the list of financially successful people and you'll find that many of them have had tremendous failures. But they got back up again and kept pursuing their dream.
It's work.
It's Work.
It's WORK!
And it's usually very HARD work.
I frequently hear from people who say they want to be financially successful. They write me via email or on this blog. I meet them at conferences. I see them light up when they begin to understand the possibilities that are before them.
And then, they do nothing.
In the free world, it is your right to do whatever you want with your aspirations (within the law). And if you want to squander your time and let your dreams die on the vine, that's your choice.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
And I don't believe we were designed to live that kind of life.
Are there any guarantees that your hard work will turn to riches?
Nope. And anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something.
But, I can guarantee this...
If you dare to dream, choose to believe in your dreams, prepare yourself to do what is needed to make them a reality and take steady, repeated, unrelenting action to reach your dreams, you will grow in ways you cannot imagine.
Ideally, your bank account will grow.
But even if it doesn't, you will grow as a person.
Some of the biggest lessons I have learned in life have not come from the happy endings, but through adversity.
I have grown as a result of bad business decisions. I am now more focused than ever.
I have grown as a result of friendship betrayal. I am more protective of my boundaries, which is healthier for me, my family and my business.
And I have grown spiritually. There's nothing like a good crisis to draw you a few steps closer to your Maker. Since I am certain I won't be able to take financial riches with me when I die, I figure it's probably a good idea to value money in proper perspective. It is not a means to an end. It is a tool to be used to bless my family, my employees, and others.
It's not a secret, my friends.
It's not magic.
We want to believe their is a pill we can take to shower financial success down on us, but the truth is as plain on the nose on your face.
If you've got your big dream, it's time to pursue it.
If you don't have a big dream, or are unsure that it is the way you should go, I recommend reading The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson. It will inspire you and bring clarity to your dream.
Believe in your dream with everything you've got. Surround yourself with others who believe in you. Don't let the naysayers make you stray from your course.
Learn all you can about the task before you, but don't worry about knowing it all. Some of the best learning experiences happen along the way.
And then, take action.
Then take more action.
And keep taking action until you reach your goal.
It's simple, but not easy.
But you CAN do it.
What are you waiting for?
Please leave your thoughts and comments below. I love to hear from you!

Brilliant post - great to hear someone talk sense, there is so much twaddle out there! My mentor Dr Demartini was on 'The Secret', mainly talking about gratitude (i.e. if you whinge about what you haven't got, it's not such a good idea - better to appreciate your life!). It was irritating to find that Rhonda ignored the full picture of the LOA (like for instance everything has a downside, even being rich, so you can't purely attract 'positive' stuff), but I am glad she wrote it. I remember watching it with a 6 week old baby, my husband had just been made redundant, it was the beginning of january, and the grief of my Mum dieing while I was pregnant had just hit me, and I was feeling worse & worse. When it reminded me that if I kept focussing on feeling worse, it would keep going, I picked myself up. But luckily for me, I wasn't daft enough to think that a picture of a ferrari would get me one ;o)
I give a free gift on my Demartini related site http://www.DofL.co.uk - it might not make people rich, but it will increase the amount of 'value' in their lives and it's really simple & realistic. People are welcome to sign up to my email list, grab the gift & then unsubscribe if they fancy it.

Joel your writing is wonderful! And his accomplishments speak for you, and this small text summed it up how you feel and what they built ... the secret of being rich is the rich feel and see in you that, in the little I know you here on the Internet and in his words from his book (twitter power).
I enjoyed your words of text, I am not rich, but I'm having a hard time I'm feeling that I will be winner and win my own wealth. I'm glad this synchronicity of thought!

Well stated.
I think fear is the thing that holds people back. Maybe a bit of laziness, but I think fear is the biggie. I bet if there's such a study done that the results would indicate that those with less fear are more successful.
Getting rid of the fear is the difficult part, even for the person who works hard.

I so needed to read something like this today. Thank you for enlightening me. I always had big dreams, but somehow I let the world around me to take over and put them on the very back burner. Last 14 months of my life I've been to hell and back. Never in my wildest dreams I imagined to celebrate my 40st birthday by my husband losing his job and having hard time to get another, having child in a hospital, being taken to collection and not having enough money to pay the basic bills. Everywhere I turned somebody kept telling me just think positive, imagine yourself having it all, karma won't let you down....bla,bla,bla.
Guess what? I didn't work.
Your article today moved something in me and I think it's time to dream and follow.
December 18, 2009 11:36 AM
You are absolutely right, Joel. I have seen so much garbage on the internet about "cash machines" and "magic buttons" and ad nauseam. This country and its millionaires and billionaires got that way through old fashioned work. Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Donald Trump and the like amassed their fortunes through shrewd business savvy and plain old work! When we put our mind to it and want to succeed, I believe that the good Lord above will reward us, but only if we are proper stewards of His money. We all have that dream of becoming financially independent, but we have to initiate the steps and perservere in our quest for the good life. Plus, it sure doesn't hurt to be a decent person! Thanks for an insightful and great article. Keep 'em coming!

that is all useful, but I must say that not only hard-work is required but also YOU should think big and straight. I have a free e-book on my website ebooks section that reveals the top seven secrets of rich and famous. you can read it or download it for a offline reading.
anyway thanks for all the nice stuff that you send to my inbox.

We all seem to realize that to go and buy a loaf of bread we've got to get up and take action.
However, we seem to think (wish, hope) that the larger things will somehow appear magically. Maybe, because they seem so daunting. But just like driving a car from LA to NY all you need to do, is take car of is what is right in front of your nose. Keep doing that and you'll end up in NY.
What's the one thing you can do today to move in the desired direction. It doesn't take long to make progress.
Thanks for the great post.

I really enjoyed The Dream Giver. Bruce Wilkinson's books are so easy to read and yet very inspiring.
Didn't God say to write the vision and make it plain so those that read it can run with it? How else are others going to support your vision if you can't explain it to them?
December 18, 2009 11:51 AM
Joel... great stuff! Very true. It is hard work indeed - Action, Personal and Business Growth (or Maturity), Dreaming Big, Thinking Big, Persistence, Doing Good Deeds, Treating your Customers Right...
Tom Peters and Bob Waterman wrote a book in the early 80's called "In Search of Excellence". It's still relevant today. And when you read this book, it really boils down to applying the same principles found in the Bible.!
Keep up the good work. Your stuff is getting more and more interesting by the month!

Joel,
You're my hero, man! Shout it from the rooftops! Anyone who wants to be successful only need enough gumption to be willing to work their hiney off and to keep believing in themselves and their dreams even when nobody else does. That's the Secret - plain and simple.
Happy holidays to you and to your family!

Nice to hear from the "practical" perspective again Joel!
You make some really good points...especially this comment: "If you dare to dream, choose to believe in your dreams, prepare yourself to do what is needed to make them a reality and take steady, repeated, unrelenting action to reach your dreams, you will grow in ways you cannot imagine."
Makes me think...growth is what it's all about! (getting rich is just a pleasant side effect LOL)
Of course, for overall balance it's probably a good idea to include some of the "airy/fairy" metaphysical stuff, too! Just be careful so we don't get too distracted and forget the practical side...:-)
Thanks for the thoughts,

Joel,
This message is one of the most direct in you face explanations of stop dreaming and get off your ASS I've read. People have seen the SECRET and they listen to some guru thinking something is going to fall from the sky and all will be well. A dream that is put into action will do more to bring into fruition than anything I know of. Words and actions make the world go around and when those, who call themselves Entrepreneurs, decide to implement this in their lives the blessing will flow. Dream big and work you ass off don't let anything distract you or get in you way.
Now, go to your destiny!!

I remember vividly Joel when the Secret came out and everyone was quitting their jobs and sitting around waiting for the law of attraction to magically transform their lives with none other than thought. It seems like decades ago right now but still today people are under the assumption that positive thought is all you need to succeed.
I do believe that fundamentally positive thought is a part of the success equation. If you didn't strongly believe and focus on your path I don't think that the actions you were taking would be as effective and produce the results as well.
Work is defiantly one of the keys to the door of success, there are others.
Helping others and giving is pretty powerful. It seems the more value given to people the more that is returned. There seems to be a point where this fact is clouded and forgotten sometimes. Work is defiantly not the golden key in the fierce competitive world of the internet today. I have heard there is no golden key many times on the internet, that's BS. I have seen the golden key many times. For years we have been busting our butts trying to make our lives better via the internet. Almost every waking hour we spend working on these computers, We know very well what work is trust me.
The Golden Key is getting mentioned by a big name marketer, getting that nudge is the true Golden Key to success. I have seen it time and time again.
So I do agree that work has a great deal to do with success. But believing in what you are doing and that it will produce your desired results. Having something of value to offer is another. Also catching a break contributes hugely to success.
Thanks for the post, and allowing me to write as a comment the article I was to post on my site this morning. Ha,ha!
Moveing on to bigger and better.

Joel, I felt that all you wrote in your post were from your personal experience and I couldn't agree more when you tell us this,
"I have grown as a result of friendship betrayal. I am more protective of my boundaries, which is healthier for me, my family and my business."
I trusted my bestfriend of over 10 years until one day he betrayed me. The worst case is, I trusted my cousin and it landed me in jail for almost 4 solid years!!!
I thank God for everything that had happen. For all that I know, all those bad experiences I had, lies an extremely valuable lesson.
I really enjoy reading some of your posts and appreciate your truthfulness.
I wish you a good health, wealth and happiness. God bless.

Your thoughtful insights were actually stunning in their honesty. I am actually surprised to hear such cutting edge criticism from "Mr. Nice Guy Joel Comm."
The author of "The Secret" Lawsuit really gave me a jolt. Had not heard a word, so Thanks for the news update. I will depend upon You more in the future for important news commentary. Thanks for challenging all of us to think...

WORK, WORK, and WORK on something you have a passion for... is the "secret" to your success in life... Thoughts and feelings are GREAT, but without MASSIVE ACTION... You end up thinking and feeling like S**t!
Blessings to you and yours!

Very well said. I really liked what you said about how many people will get excited about making online and not follow through.I have to admit from time to time and even now at times, I get lazy and don't want to take actions that will lead me closer to my dreams. It really is true that "work" must be part of the solution. I am working on my own site and I am still new to the marketing world.
December 18, 2009 2:04 PM
Right on Joel, I believe it is knowing what you want and taking consistent daily action (work)and adjusting if you see what you do is not working or do it more if it is.There is a secret though and the lazy shall never now it.
December 18, 2009 2:56 PM
Joel,
You have been in marketing for a long time. I thought for sure that this was a sales letter and there was going to be a price of $39 (regular $165) at the bottom of the page.
I have become conditioned to this kind of expectation. But thanks for the advice. It is uplifting as I found the Secret to be.
I'm no stranger to work having started marketing on the web 10 months ago and spent many long days behind the computer. However, I still have much to learn and a long way to go but plan on being successful. I really enjoy working online and look forward to what it returns.
It's nice to know that you concur that work is an important part of the process.

December 18, 2009 2:58 PM
I actually know all that stuff. I admit I was taken by my dreams and fantasies several times, which caused me to lose money to scams and frauds, or just failures, but deep in myself I always knew that it is "too good to be true". Just like you said, overnight riches happen, but very rare and just to "chosen" group of people.
I am somewhere in the middle, I know I have to work, work, work, yet every 3rd or 4th day I get massively distracted by something totally unrelated to blogging, making money online or internet marketing in general.
I believe I CAN be very wealthy, not some helluva rich guy, but with nice monthly income.
problem is that my work is not 100% efficient. I work a few weeks very hard, and then it comes 3-4 weeks where I do less than I do in one day during my "insane hard-work week periods" when I pump and push like crazy. And that slows me down.
I guess the problem is more of a organizational nature, I am a bit messy in my schedule and I don't work at peak efficiency even when I am in that hard working "zone".
I've proved to myself that I have that mental attitude I need to succeed, now I only have to put it fully in motion.
Great post btw, I just thought "here we go again, same ol' boulsheat again", but then when I started reading, I was totally like - "yes, this is right, this is what I am talking and thinking about, this man tells the truth"

Thank you Joel, for telling it like it is. I get so many email offers telling me how easy it can be to make money if I just buy this program, or that.
It isn't easy. I takes work. Applying your bottom to a chair and working.
Thank you for telling us that it isn't all dreams and rainbows, that it takes work to make those dreams come true. Thank you for telling the truth.
December 18, 2009 5:42 PM
Maynard G. Krebs said it best...WORK! Whenever someone would mention that dirty four letter word he was nowhere to be found. Of course he was just a fictional character but many online and offline wannabe millionaires have the same attitude.

Joel,
Yes, it is hard work that will make us realize our dreams, at least that is what I have heard. I've been working hard for a long time but still haven't found fincancial freedom. For those of us who don't have a natural gift and no inheritance, all we can do is work harder. Maybe someday it will come. I know that success is not measured by what we have but rather by who we are. It would be nice to have a little more material wealth to go along with who we are!
Brad
December 18, 2009 7:23 PM
I wish more beginners in affiliate marketing recognized that WORK is the "Secret." All the time some people spend searching for the magic "easy" button would make them rich if they were working on one thing instead.
Unfortunately, in this world of immediate gratification, there aren't too many willing to put in the time. But I guess that means more for us, right?
December 18, 2009 8:03 PM
Great Post! I agree completely. Focused work is essential to making things happen.
Sure I have gotten lazy from time to time but I know that when I get focused then things start happening.
It's true those bad business decisions for me have made me more aware and in the end I have made me even more money thereafter.
Thanks,
Chris

Nice post Joel - thanks
I have been a Wattles fan for some time now and I
recognised the Secret as an adjunct to Wattles philosophy.
There are two so-called downsides the Secret left out -
both unpopular. One is the work or effort aspect. here is
a quote from Wattles which summarises it.
"Every man has the natural and inherent power to think what he wants
to think, but it requires far more effort to do so than it does to think
the thoughts which are suggested by appearances. To think according
to appearance is easy; to think truth regardless of appearances is
laborious, and requires the expenditure of more power than any other
work man is called upon to perform.
There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that
of sustained and consecutive thought; it is the hardest work in the world.
This is especially true when truth is contrary to appearances. Every
appearance in the visible world tends to produce a corresponding form
in the mind which observes it; and this can only be prevented by
holding the thought of the truth."
The other unpopular one is personal responsibility
and what you say about adversity is so true in the
light of the fact we do create what we have because
we have determined our lives to get to the point we
are at now.
There seems such a swing away from anything that
is deemed negative that it's almost non PC to talk
about the downers, the bummers and the part we
don't want to take responsibility for.
the Secret did cherry pick the nicey nicey aspect it's
true - however it did a service to wake a lot of people
up to the thought that thoughts count.
And they do. More and more leading frontier scientists
are examining the power of intention and thought and
what Wattles said (and the Secret nearly said) has now
been endorsed in scientific terms and been re-thought
away from the arbitrary "stuff and nonsense" dismissal
we generally feel safer with.
Being responsible for our thoughts, which all too often
undermine us, is indeed hard work. I read an astonishing
fact that most books are started and then left on unread
on the bookshelves. (Average pages read 19). This could
be construed as laziness - I think differently.
Humans are family and community creatures. We work
willingly when witnessed and acknowledged. we want to
belong and look after others naturally. So the last part
that is left out of both books is the ease with which men
and women can achieve their dreams in an aligned group.
the Pyramids it has now been discovered, were not built
by slaves. The Egyptians themselves did this willingly -
the builders were revered as we revere sportsmen in our
time. They were nurtured by good food, beer and medical
help. The ancients were highly intelligent, very strong and
sure had some mighty force of intention behind them.
So do we. We are re-grouping. Unity, harmony, alignment
of thought has achieved much. And there is much for us
to do.
I have modernised and edited Wattles with a foreward citing
scientific references and new discoveries. I am happy to give
this book to you Joel to distribute to your list. I am also very
impressed by the great posts you have above. You sure do
have a great group of thinkers - and doers by the sound of it.

Joel,
This is a great post. The thought that it takes action to become successful is so far from the minds of most that it is scary.
Success involves taking action that others are willing to pay for.
Service to others. And if you happen to be able to provide a service in an area that you enjoy, that is a bonus.

Joel, I love the secret - but I've been working and working, hard, very hard, for a very long time. I ain't rich, I ain't broke, but dang I could have a bit more dollar-power. Actually, I think the secret is NOT working, but doing something you love that will make you happy, if not rich, for the fullness of one's life. The trick is to find your passion, your bliss; then the money will come, as Joseph Campbell says. My passion is to work from home and I do that through my graphic training. I work/play a lot, and am hoping to see some real money results soon. Thanks for your encouraging and honest words.

You've said it all Joel. There is no magic formula to getting rich. It's all about identifying what service or product to consistently render a sizable number of people.
Then you have to WORK it out! In another word, you have to ACT on it. This is where a lot of people fall out. They don't really BELIEVE they will succeed. They FEAR they might fail and lose the money invested in the project.
So they go in search of that magic wand they can strike on a rock and money will flow like a stream. But unfortunately this never happens.
Read success stories of ordinary people with financial worries, but who nevertheless acted on their dream and went ahead to build business empires that have spread to many nations of the world from scratch, and you will discover a similar path they followed - they all continued to pursue their dream in spite of the odds against them.
If you have the time, you can read interesting success stories of people like you who built multinational businesses from start up and draw motivation and inspiration to achieve the same for yourself at my blog: http://www.successprinciplesonline.com
Thanks for this post Joel.
December 21, 2009 9:39 AM
I agree that hard work is necessary for success. However, there is definitely room for positive thinking as suggested in The Secret. To me, positive thinking only helps to keep one motivated when it's time to put in the hard work. The only problem is the message of work should be stressed more in the movie. I have had two clients in the past few years who were big fans of the movie and thought it was 'the secret' to their business success. Both failed in business and from my view its because they excelled at the positive thinking and visualization but didnt think hard work was needed.
The answer? Positive thinking and visualization of success + hard work = Success

I love it...Dani Johnson once said;"God is not a lottery God."
However, he does reward those who diligently seek him.
I have been steadily working at building things on the Internet and at times it seems like Google sets me back a few steps. The truth of the matter is that I am seeing passive income increasing. This is a good thing.
I have set my sights on a ten year goal and continue to work toward it.
By the looks of things the Internet will still be a live ten years from now.

Excellent article, Joel, as always. One thought to offer: There is a saying in the entertainment business that it takes ten years to create an overnight sensation. Even there, it's highly unusual for someone to become successful overnight. It's just that the public doesn't know about the many years of training and dues paying required to get to a point that the world knows who you are.
As for LoA, I've always operated under the premise that God helps those who help themselves. I've noticed that the harder I work, the more focused I am, and the truer I stay to my values, the more "doors" that open.
Your comment that praying for wealth doesn't work reminds me of the joke about the person who constantly prayed to win the lottery. After months of not winning, he gets angry at God and yells, "why won't you let me win the lottery?" To which God replies, "help me help you: Buy a ticket, OK?"
The lesson: you have to do your _own_ work first.
Best wishes!

GOOD TALK JOEL.HOW DO I START TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE.CAN YOU TEACH ME JOEL?

Great Post, and I agree that it takes lots of work to make money online. I didn't know anything about Internet Marketing about a year ago.
I have learned so much in the last year and worked very hard. Now things are starting to click and I am making money online. I am launching a new free membership site in Jan. of 2010 and it took a lot of work to get the launch ready.
I see two many people spending a lot of money for a quick Internet Marketing System from some Guru. They try a few things in the system and don't follow it step by step. Then they wonder why they aren't making thousands and thousands of dollars. Next they see another system, and buy that one and the cycle repeats itself over and over.
They wonder why they never make any money. Lots of work and sticking to one system will win out everyday.

Hi Joel
This is a fantastic post and absoloutly true! You have totally hit the nail on the head here.
The problem these days is people have no problem WANTING to be rich but tend to shy away from putting in the hard work that needs to be done in order to get rich!
They will either try and give up at the first couple of hurdles or even worse, not try at all and just moan about not achieving their dreams. The reality is hard work and effort will equal results!

Thanks for the post.
It seems that the Law of Attraction folks are attracting some nasty things these days. James Arthur Ray, who was featured in the movie "The Secret" has recently been charged with manslaughter. Whether or not he is guilty remains to be determined, but nevertheless, the question arises, did he attract this. According to his philosophy, I guess he did.
