"When you are through changing, you are through." - Bruce Barton
Change is inevitable. Apart from death and taxes, change is the only thing in this life that we can count on.
This past year has found me in the midst of much change. After a number of years as an author, speaker and entrepreneur, I have spent the last year quietly reassessing my life. Taking some time away from work, I've been tending to more important things.
During this time, I have turned away a number of joint venture proposals, sold some of my properties, shut down some businesses which were not contributing to my goals and even left a potential book deal on the table... perhaps to be revisited in the future.
There's no shortage of opportunity out there. But just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it.
After forty-seven years of living, sixteen of those involved in my online business, I've finally learned to say the word "no." At first it was challenging. It has become liberating.
And interestingly enough, the majority of those on the receiving end have overwhelmingly responded with great respect and support for my "no."
My choices have led me into a mini-sabbatical of sorts. It's a time of regrouping and renewing myself for whatever might come next. I don't see it ending any time soon.
But that doesn't mean I want to be completely unplugged from my business, my followers or opportunities. It just means that I am being very selective about what I do and how I spend my time.
I suppose you could say that I am in the process of figuring out what I want to be when I "grow up."
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress." - Frederick Douglass
I don't expect anyone to make my decisions for me. But sometimes it is interesting to hear others' thoughts and input. You never know what you might glean form the simplest of suggestions.
I've spoken countless times on the importance of following your passion. I believe every person is created by God with a unique set of passions, talents, skills and personality. This blend of desires, knowledge and our own quickiness is what makes us so unique.
However, sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees in our own lives. For example, while I had always enjoyed playing DJ for my friends and family as a child, it took a family member to suggest I audition for the local radion station when I was in college. It was one of those "why didn't I think of that?" moments that led to my stint as a radio DJ, which led to my first entrepreneurial venture into my own mobile DJ business.
At this point in my life, I recognize the talents, skills, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, passions and personality that I bring to the table. But I thought I would take this opportunity to solicit opinions from my readers, if for no other reason than to re-engage with you.
"Only the wisest and stupidest of men never change." - Confucius
While I am finding new owners for several of my assets, I do plan on keeping a few of my websites and products.
WorldVillage.com is now sixteen-years old, but it hasn't received much attention recently. It's currently a blogger site, but I am open to doing something more with it.
FamilyFirst.com has been online since 1998 and is updated several days each week with original content. But there might be other opportunities I have not yet investigated.
Then there is this blog, JoelComm.com. I've considered accepting applications for others to write guest-blog articles on my blog. The search engines treat my site well, so there could be considerable exposure for the right content.
"Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken." - Frank Herbert
Then there is my speaking and writing. I don't really have a topic I am eager to write about, but I suppose I could update AdSense Secrets for 2012. Perhaps there is another topic that would make for a great traditionally-published book.
Next there is my ability to speak, teach, motivate and inspire. It's been refreshing to take some time away from the stage, but I am starting to miss it. What should I speak about?
Along those lines, I have also placed my one-on-one coaching on the back-burner. I have quite a bit of experience I could pass on to others. It could be in the form of individual coaching or group workshops. I'm not sure how I could best serve in this capacity.
Interestingly enough, I am barely using my social media platform very much these days. I've got over 73,000 Twitter followers, nearly 14,000 Facebook fans, 7000 LinkedIn direct connections and I am in over 15000 Google Plus circles. There is opportunity to speak directly to a vast nunber of people on any number of topics.
I'm not in a hurry to make any big changes. But I am curious to hear your input on the ideas raised in this entry. Whether you have ideas or comments related to my websites, my writing, my products, my speaking or my coaching, I am looking forward to hearing what your needs are, and how I might use my experience to meet those needs.
And since the theme of this entire entry revolves around change, out-of-the-box ideas that take me out of the realm I've been in and into something new are entirely welcome.
I look forward to reading your comments! Please take the opportunity to share them below...
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." - Reinhold Niebuhr

Hey Joel,
Congratulations on slowing down somewhat but with all your following, there is such a chance to really make a difference and one of them is to assist in the educating and empowering others to take control of the health and not leave it up to mainstream to "fix" them when the proverbial hits the fan!!! I believe that you could do sooo much in this much needed area and would love to share more if you thnk that is a go.
Cheers
Jan
That is interesting, I will be 72 in 3 weeks and I am still trying to make a dollar on the internet, but I am trying. More focus in 2012 for me. I have things working, and hope to be seeing some money very soon. You are at your age, exactly were most of us are trying to reach. With all that going, I would pick the two or three I enjoy most, give them a few hours a day, a couple of days a week, and enjoy life. Enjoy today, there are a lot of tomorrows ahead, some will be good, some not so good. What counts is, When you get to where your going, did you enjoy the trip?
Joel,
You always have a point of view or insight on a topic that is different from others so I'm sure if you published more to your blog it would do well.
Hi Joel, I like following your emails as they really are what is needed. I have been trying to learn to say no for years and still haven't cracked it!!!!!!!!
There are so many things to do nowadays that we get confused between materialism and enjoying life. Working too hard and not spending the time to relax and enjoy our families. I think we forget that the true things in life are free, love, happiness and family.
What do I want to be when I grow up - Still deciding lol
There are so many disenfranchised young people out there who may be staring into the face of no job, no prospects and considering their options.
Your ability to create businesses out of nothing should be a huge inspiration to these young people to know that they too can do this with a little motivation, hard work and a good idea.
Instead of losing them to the dole that our government is encouraging, why not inspire them to take on their own ideas and start something great like you did?
We have a whole generation at risk - you could be the one to help us find our next great businessman or businesswoman. Would that be great?
Best of luck, and thanks for all you have done and continue to do.

Will await your return Joel. I know you will come back stronger. :) have been with you for years, u never disappoint and will continue trusting you
Wow I am very surprised our opinion matter now.
Years ago, I sent you/your team (you published at this time a "physical" monthly magazine) with a few questions & opinions... years after I still wait ANY answer.
So it is really surprising that now you feel "empty" wondering what you have to do.
Sorry but I don't have any answer to propose you. You followed your own path & so do I.
Every body gets something in return from its own actions.
I TRULY wish you to feel better soon & know what to do next!
My only advice (I lost very close people) is to take your time to relax & think peacefully before doing stupid things.
Regards,
Joe. (yes that's my real 1stname)
Hmmm, what would I do in that case?
Withdraw from being very active for a while, and do something new, perhaps a new sport or hobby. Take up something totally different, anything that will require some time.
How about golf or something similar? Do you play golf already? Get training to improve your game.
Card games is another one i would suggest, games such as poker or bridge.
While doing this, do the minimum required for your online business for a while.
Then maybe re-assess after some time, and see if you still feel the same way.
Anyway, good luck whichever way you choose.
Regards
Brian
Hi Joel, let me just repeat Derek Sivers wonderful phrase, which seems to suit where you are perfectly:
"If you can't say HELL YEAH!, say NO" - it's damn hard to do isn't it!
Joel,
It is always good to take stock about one's goals and direction in life. I would say keep saying "no" until you figure out what your goals are.
I recommend to keep your life simple, but whatever you do, do it well. As you always say, "Do Good Stuff."
Simplify your life and the answer will come to you. Get rid of clutter, responsibilities and search for a direction. This direction should be something that is bigger than yourself. Think bold and big as a way to give back to society, rather than take. I am not saying you have not been doing that...just make sure that whatever your one thing is, make sure it gives something back to society. You may have all the money you need at this point in your life. Not sure, though. That is for you to decide. However, I would use your abilities to help others achieve their goals.
You could come out with another edition of Twitter Power. In this new edition, focus on how using Twitter can help others help others. Focus on meaning or a cause using technology and the leverage of technology. Maybe you can help businesses to use technology not only for making money but also for helping society through philanthropic activities. I believe people of means need to share their wealth to help others contribute to society and be a role model for how to do that. Get into something larger than yourself and you will find personal meaning and a profound happiness. You will be rewarded with a rich fulfilling life when you do this.
There are many people who are unemployed in the US and around the world. Use your talents for using technology in business to help people starting new businesses so they can feed their families and contribute to the world. Provide low cast training and support. Provide some grants to people who have a good business plan and adopt them so they can succeed.
These are just a few ideas. I am glad you are asking the right question at this point in your life. You are wise to do it. Whatever you decide to do: Do one thing well, Keep it simple and make it something that is larger than who you are.
Thanks for asking for feedback.
Best of luck.
Diane
Joel,
I commend you for your amazing quest to continue your legacy. It takes a real man to say "no" and we respect you for that.
We do however miss you and your wonderful product, know that what you will create in the future will continue to "WOW" us.
Thanks so much for all that you do!
Hi Joel,
I enjoy your emails very much.I too, have been struggling.
It is good to reevaluate where your energy is going.
Have you taken a vacation recently to refresh and recharge the batteries? What about church.
I started out 11 years ago on Ebay, was happy for the first 5/6 and then the process really started to change and I figured out I too needed to change.
I think we all need goals to go out 20 years, a great business plan and most important the WHY that we are doing these things.
Maybe you need to create some new tools. The internet changes
hourly.
You lost weight which should change your self-image. Maybe find a new hobby for you and the wife and talk to you children about school and their future. Do some volunteer work.
Write an ebook on everything you have done and throw your heart into it.
Do some good and All The Best!
Walter
Dear Joel,
You are not alone in going through these kind of crisis. I am also recently took a personal audit and decided to follow my passion ( which energised me even when I went through a very painful relationship break up) and when I do it time stand still. I have not yet decided how to monetize it. I am sure I will find a way.
So go ahead and liberate the spark of the infinite intelligence inside you.
With regards
M
Joel,
Great post, it's nice to have the choices to work on the projects that are important to you.
You provide a good example of what leveraging your talents and abilities can do for thoses who use them to help serve others.
As Always, Here's to Your LifetoSuccess,
God Bless You,
John Clark
When you ask for opinions from others, you run the risk of substituting their thoughts for your own. Rather than being "other-driven" you need to focus on what is truly important to you. The wisest advice I ever got was "Do what you love and the money will follow." Ask yourself this-If you were suddenly diagnosed with a terminal illness that gave you a year of a good quality life before the terminal symptoms began, how would you spend that year? The things you would focus on are the things that are really meaningful to you. Because you are so passionate about them and have a creative mind, that will drive what you get involved in next. Your mind and imagination will figure out the opportunities and how to apply them. Be "inner-driven", not "other-driven."
Don't do the Adsense update. I am a customer and it's fine. Besides, when a person says "I could always do..." they are not really committed to it.
Hey Joel,
Good to hear from you. I hope you are having a great start on the new year.
It's really hard to suggest something because your passion is underwhelming from what I read in this post.
Yes, you "miss things" and "maybe you should", but that is not passion.
Still, here is a couple of suggestions.
With so many Google algorithm changes I know it would be great to have an update on your Adsense book. Maybe build on that with your insights on affiliate marketing.
Hope these suggestions stimulate some nerve cells linked to the passion area of your brain :)
Best regards,
Stew
Joel:
I want to encourage you focus your God-given talent where it will make the greatest social impact: Public education! Never has there been a greater need or opportunity to challenge our youth via public education. The timing is 'ripe' for alternative innovative curricula created by innovators like you.
Please seriously consider my genuine thoughts.
Sincerely,
Don
Hey Joel,
Sounds like you are going to follow your heart, it might sound silly saying that but I feel it is true. We tend to follow our thoughts/mind when we are younger and then as time goes by we attain wisdom. Have fun on your new journey.
Fran

Hi, Joel --
As I understand it, you made a significant change a few years back. You surrounded yourself with talent and created a more powerful organization.
That's a pretty good trick. You might consider sharing how you did that successfully.
Many small businesses are, in fact, jobs. The "consultants" are "independent," because the (solo operators) can't find employment. Some of these people are actually good at what they do. They are professionals in their disciplines. And they are not available on the job market.
However, these same people are at a loss as to how to expand effectively into real, live company status.
Micro companies tend to have a credibility problem. Risk is an issue for employer and employee. Well, you get it.
Anyway, I believe there is an appetite for guidance in how to upgrade small operations.
Clearly you have insights into how to pull that off. Maybe you could do some good, there.
Thanks
Ted Dieck
Authenticity is rare and powerful, Joel, as you know...
Why not expand your thinking beyond the tools of the trade to the benefits of the using, and offer both?
You and I should connect, you know... I'm only a few miles down the road, and we did "meet" up at Wondervu last fall...!
Blessings,
ssh
Stay aware of what is coming to you. Only do the things that make your heart sing. You have done much for many people, filled your obligations, are comfortable financially. Now choose your joy.
Hi Joel, If I may make a suggestion-how about some charity work to a organisation of your choice.
You seem to looking for purpose in your life. Maybe you want to go from a point of simple ambition to meaning in your life.
Nobody needs to ask the question- What is my purpose? Your purpose will always be found in service. Just for one day put your attention on making life better for someone else.
In this life it doesn't really matter what you do. What matters is that you put your attention on how may I serve. Just run your whole business that way - not putting your focus on outcome but on service. Your life then becomes about living those virtues of serving others not yourself. Do that and you will know your purpose.
It isn't complicated. There are people in every area of your life that need help. You have been given many opportunities and had great success for your efforts. Now simply stay in a state of gratitude for all you have and look for ways to serve and help others. It is really very simple.
Hi Joel,
How about doing a TED talk to share your knowledge/wisdom?
Calvin
Hi Joel
You know I am 60 and I've lost my job and everything else. I have to start from scratch while I know I will never get another job at my age. So now I ask God to guide me to where I can serve Him best, and I believe that it will be in line with all the talents He gave me.
So there you have it. Pray.
Hello, Joel...
Life unfolds in beautiful ways! I read a couple of your earlier books - and was then privileged to meet you in person at one of your book signings in Loveland. I had an immediate "connection" with you - especially for those few minutes when you treated me like I was the only person there. I told you I appreciated your commitment to the Lord and you graciously responded by saying that your spiritual decision was the most important decision you ever made. That has stuck with me!
Marching forward... I greatly admire the personal choices you have made - especially these past few years. Most folks don't have the wisdom (and, guts!) to do this. The biggest "winner" in all of this is your family! (Don't EVER take them for granted!)
My strong conviction is that if you will seek God first, and your family second your life will continue to daily unfold in sunshine-filled days!
I have been blessed to celebrate seventy-three birthdays - and I feel like the best is yet to come! I have been a sincere and quiet Christian all my life. I have practiced a vegetarianism/vegan lifestyle since childhood - and I still climb mountains. (Rocky Mountain National Park is in your back yard, Joel!)
My point is, if you follow God, take care of your family and your health, everything else will be an amazing adventure!
Continue to grow "old" and thank God for every day and the gifts He has given you! That way you will never allow cynicism to enter your life!
You have the gifts of spreading encouragement and hope. Don't hide your gifts. Just let this time of being on "sabbatical" filter through your very being. Walk slowly, breath deeply, love every day and continue being the wonderful Joel that you are! Your pathway WILL become clear and exciting!
I admire you deeply. I appreciate your high moral standards, and your uplifting demeanor...
You are one of the best, Joel!
Jerry Christian
Hey Joel,
I enjoyed your personal blog post and email. 2 years ago I made one your statements my New Years Resolution: "Just because I can do something, doesn't mean I should" - My filter is based on the idea that if someone else can do it too, then I need to let them do it and find those things that if I don't do them, they may never get done. Part of my personal destiny of sorts.
I am going to recommend a book that I think will totally resonate with you and perhaps provide some additional insight and perspective you may find helpful at this stage. I gave the book to brother a few years ago and I can see the changes in what he chooses to do with his success and influence.
The book is called "Halftime - Moving from Success to Significance" here is the Amazon link http://tinyurl.com/7ygtqqr (no not an affiliate link or anything, just trying to be helpful here)
Best of luck in your pursuits, thanks for keeping it real.
Be Blessed!
Fitz
Hi Joel,
Not many have the experience and opportunities to make a lot of money, especially in today's economy. If God has given you that gift, I say make use of what God has given you, do it the best you can, and give the money to those in need to share the gospel.
Have you read the book Revolution in world missions by K.P. Yohanan? He founded Gospel for Asia (http://www.gfa.org/) He gives compelling reasons for us in America to share our resources to spread the gospel in the persecuted areas of Asia.
I know from your writings that you are a believer, so I encourage you to continue to make money, and use it to impact the Kingdom by giving to God's work in a bigger way than you are already doing.
God bless you!
Joel - I commend you on your quest for personal satisfaction and true value from your efforts (not unlike the rest of us). That personal fulfillment is what we all intend and seek in our daily lives. It is also what we want from all our interactions and more recently from those online. So far that expansive system hasn't delivered. We have web connectivity - and enhanced social interface(s) {Facebook, etc} - and publication capacity/media {youtube, etc} - but we have yet to create an infrastructure framework that allows our cooperative interoperability - globally. My observation is that we all want to "go where someone knows our name" and then we all seek to contribute/cooperate in a meaningful way for our own interests and that of our fellow man. I believe we are ready and the online technology is capable of making that happen - and perhaps your answer will come when you.. ASK4.. it...
Joel,
I deeply respect and appreciate your honesty in this post.
I'd like to hear more about this:
"I've spoken countless times on the importance of following your passion. I believe every person is created by God with a unique set of passions, talents, skills and personality. This blend of desires, knowledge and our own quickiness is what makes us so unique."
Thanks so much!
Hey Joel,
Long time no see. Love the post. I see great things ahead no matter what direction you take.
Here's an idea: www.finishers.org

p.s. Are you at ASW? If so, let me know. It would be good to see you again.
Joel, I've always had the deepest respect for your contributions to Internet marketing, but never more so than when you stopped the IM hype and started refocusing on your spirit. I've been going through a lot of the same things this past decade or so.
If you are looking for an idea that would leverage your gifts best, you might consider taking an Extreme Makeover approach whereby you and your team help change the lives of people who have hit bottom and need your help to lift them back up.
Joel: today's younger generation are being raised on a news-feed of "no jobs, Wall Street and business are the "bad-guys", and too much TV/video games/mind-numbing entertainment". I am sure that you have lead your children to understand the value of business and of being their own boss, working in their passion, employing others, and such things. Why not help spread that word through our public education system?
Good Luck with whatever you do, and keep us informed please.
--Chuck
I am about your age, and I'm just learning the ability to say "no" as well. :) Sometimes that lesson comes later than it should. I'm happy for both of us that we are spending more time on the things that really matter the most.
Good choice, I used to work my butt's off working 7 days a week. No time off with the family. Now I enjoy nature and spend time at the cottage. Life is great now.
Totally agree - smart move. What's next? Keep us posted.
R u feeling 'lost' and looking for a connection with your spiritual (not religious) self?
Hi Joel!
Good for you for jumping off the hamster wheel & reflecting.
I'd suggest something similar to what our colleague Rick Raddatz did... Create your own charitable foundation. Get it funded. And help some people in the world. I remember what fun you had on your Ustream broadcast for the fresh water campaign you did a few years back. I think you'd be even more inspired & have more fun creating & promoting your own charity.
Whatever you do I know it'll be in service to a higher good based on your unique talents from God.
Hugs & happy new year! Have fun deciding!

I am 58 years old, I live in Romania and I thank to GOD I am still wake up in the morning. I try to promote the site above and other 4 to earn some more money. I am glad to can tell everybody my short story but single help come only for God.
I have no hope for the future. Thank you for reading this some words.
Give away an Internet marketing plan. Use your accumulate knowledge and teach others how to avoid the pitfalls and pot holes and make money on the Internet. Make it easy to understand, step-by-step, and when your students are making money encourage them to freely share it with others.
Don't be afraid to give away golden eggs as long as you own the golden goose!
Thank you, Joel
As always, you give content to reflect on!
Have you considered establishing a "Comm.com" Academy? A training venue for others to transfer your knowledge and point of view to even larger audiences. In other words, clone yourself so that your message is heard by the broadest possible community.
You train the trainers and they train the world!
Here's to your "turning the leaf"!
G. William
Hi, I think it would be a good choice and change to start a fast food business, you would be great at that. Thanks.
Hi Joel.
I applaud your decision and learning to say no. That is a tough one sometimes and you are to be congratulated on your decision to be selective in how you spend your time. Sometimes it takes a life changing event before that happens.
The one sentence that just pulled me in was.."But just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it." How true is that!?
I admire you and your courage to do what is right for you. Many could take a lesson..or two from you.
My focus this year is do things things which fulfill me and make me happy and make my life better. I loved your post. I hope to not lose touch with you because you are one of the "good guys"
Much luck with whatever you choose to do Joel.
Linda
Hey Joel,
If it's a question of the "greatest good", then I think your time would be best spent teaching entrepreneurship and marketing on a grand scale. If you could come up with a program that could touch as many people as possible and instill a sense of financial responsibility and get people creating real wealth.
Both the young and old could benefit, as increasingly, less and less stuff is made in the USA, the public sector is growing beyond proportion and government spending is going through the roof and shows no sign of abating.
...or you could just kick back in Mazatlan and drink margaritas! Ha!
Sincerely, A.M. Smith
I have been retired for over ten years, and I have found something that I really enjoy. I volunteer through my church, Sherman Bible Church, at an Elementary School, Washington, here in Sherman. I garner much pleasure by aiding the teachers in whatever they need me to do.
Hi Joel. I'm a fairly new follower of your blog and other products, so don't have as much background knowledge about you as others who are commenting. I would like to recommend a great book on Biblical decision making to you... Step by Step... by James Petty. You're doing one of the right things here by seeking input from others.
Blessings,
Jim Hummel
Joel,
I met you in Dallas a year and a half ago and have followed you ever since. The KaChing button sits on the desk waiting for the next time it will be graciously hit, ringing out another success. I even purchased iFart which always brings a smile to my face.
William hit it on the head: You're where most all of want to be in life. Well done for getting there at 46. My goal is to be where you are now, in five years (or less, if possible). To make all decisions regarding my time ont hinge on money is my aim.
Enjoy the fruits you've earned while selling off those commodities you haven't the passion, you once had, for. The void you create will, by law, have to be filled. I am so happy for you that you can choose what you fill it with. The world will benefit greatly, as well.
Great post, thanks for writing it, and thank you for continueing to inspire me to keep on keeping on.

Congratulations on re-assessing your life Joel.
You have great knowledge about conducting business on the Internet, and great presentation skills (I've seen you in person at seminars). Have you considered applying that knowledge and those skills to help non-profit businesses? Instead of just working with one charity, you could develop programs that teach all charities how to leverage the Internet to spread the word about their cause, call people to action, etc. This could be very rewarding to you as well as the charities (a WIN-WIN).
One more thing... I saw a sign recently that said "If you haven't grown up by age 50, you don't have to!". Only three more years and you can stay a "kid" - that's my plan!
Thanks for all the education you have provided - I look forward to your next activity.
Joel,
You are a very giving person, and seem to want to make a difference in the world. I would encourage you to find out what really gets you fired up and excited in the realm of giving, and devote your resources to that for a while. One of your greatest resources is all of us who admire you and are inspired by you. Let us know what you are doing and your efforts could really be multiplied. Best wishes and many blessings in your discernment.
Joel,
Reading all the comments about do this or that, reading this or that book, speaking here or there, why?
What a great position you are in, a young man who has worked hard and made money pursuing the things you loved at the time. Now able to "retire" and do whatever YOU want! Do not listen to everyone else because you will not be satisfied! Listen to you and your family! Wish you the best!
JB
Hi Joel, and Happy New Year
I am humbled, being asked for my opinion, considering all your accomplishments so far.
This is for you all, especially people like William,Jac and Bruce who are looking for something which will help them financially.
A professor from the University of Melbourne, Australia said a while ago:--
"In five years from now, there will have been another Google or Facebook explode onto the scene and we will wonder how on earth we could have managed without whatever service it provides".
Well, it is here already!!
PLEASE, PLEASE check this out. This could be your New Year's present to yourselves.

Hi Joel,
You end your emails with do good stuff, and that is a deep belief of yours so I would say continue to do good stuff in an area that interests you. (not for the money- because I assume you made excellent money, but it was still leaving you with an empty feeling or "is this all there is?" type feeling... which made you take a step back in the first place. )
Enjoy the "silence" for a while, and hear what speaks to you from the inside, or God or Higher Power etc. I think you want to help people on some level, which will bring blessing that are greater than money to your life.
Hi Joel,
I can tell you this: True success is not measured by how much you made or even what you gave, but a total giving of yourself. There are many young people out there who need your help. I'm not talking about the rich and elite either, but the ones that can't even afford a computer or don't even know how to surf the net. Your knowledge and skills can help to prosper a whole generation of young people, if you are willing to give of yourself, without expecting anything back! That is real success - in just knowing that you have helped another without receiving something back. God Bless You and in the future!
I am approximately your age but compared to you I'm a beginner online. With all of your knowledge I'm sure a lot of us would like to have you start a coaching program. That might be more work than you would want to do at this time.I hope you find your new purpose.
Joel, As an inspiration to many (myself included) while reading your post with the inspirational one liners included it remind me of my twitter posts which is all inspirational and the idea came to me that maybe you can turn your weakness into a strength. But you have done that before.
You have spoke before large groups and you have solo trained others.
I would think that your biggest joy came from inspiring many.
What ever you do please stay in front of many, as there you really shine.
"Man is always more than he can know of himself; consequently, his accomplishments, time and again, will come as a surprise to him." Golo Mann (1909 - 1994) Historian.
And Lastly,
"The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind him in other men/women the conviction and will to carry on." Walter Lippmann (1889 - 1974) Journalist.
These 2 remind me of you and how I have come to know you. My hope is that I will be able to learn from many masters such as yourself.
Joel,
Ten years ago when I was 41 I had a very good retail business in Manhattan. I did not even have to be at the store 95% of the time because I had good help. I had a big 2br apt. with a great view of the west side of Manhattan and a parking space! I was making a good living (not anywhere near what you have so doing what I suggest would be 100x easier for you) but after eight years I wanted to do something else. I sold everything and moved to the Dominican Republic and began spending less and living lower on the hog. I am happy now. My funds allowed me to take 10 years off from thinking about making money. I will return soon to earning money in some aspect but the things I have done could never have been done otherwise. Priceless is the word. I speak Spanish, play the guitar, wrote a book, read a few hundred books, met and helped many poor families, scuba and snorkel every week, go dirt biking, had dozens of my friends visit and opened up a new country and world to them. Thats just the tip of the iceberg. I tell you I made more REAL friends in the first three months in the DR than I did in eight years in the NYC pressure cooker. Go to a place where people(even kids)still hitchhike all the time and nobody ever gets hurt doing it.
Forget about making money for a few years. Travel and use your knowledge and money to help people that really deserve it. You can meet people and help them directly so you know exactly where your charity is going. I hope you can understand what I am saying. If you ever want to go back to the madness of thinking about making money all the time, it will be there for you. Good luck and think about what they say about the things people on their death beds wish they had done different in their lives.
Having watched your business evolve over the years, first I must say you have been super successful at everything you have done. I'm sure whatever you do choose to do will be awesome.
Not having read the comments I am guessing someone else probably has given you similar advice, but my advice to you is to go with your gut. My guess is that you know the answer and are just looking for confirmation. If not, then pray for it to be made clear to you.
I could give you ideas for all those businesses of yours, but my guess is that you are only passionate about one or of two of them (maybe none). If you aren't passionate about any of them, maybe there's something else you want to do. Do it.
Good luck with whatever you pursue.
Blessings,
George
Hi Joel, Before I get into anything I have to say you are one of the only people involved in internet marketing that have truly helped me. I have seen loads of progress online. Thanks to you and the LORD JESUS CHRIST for putting people like you on the earth.
I just need to ask you one favour will it be possible for you to help a deserving homeless person out there? Someone who has the attitude to succeed but does not know whom or where to turn to.
That's something I have always thought of doing someday. I don't think any other marketer has ever done it before.
Speaking to people inspiring them and motivating are one thing.Speaking from the heart is much more difficult. The greatest need in all of society is compassion and honesty.I live in an area in Canada that now is ripe with unemployment, most of our young people have left our town to find better jobs.I know this happens everywhere ,but it seems that our very own roots are being challenged. In a world that lacks commitiment ,where people have to occupy public properties,we need generiosty to prevail love to be inhaled all the while remembering the line between morality and mortality grow closer together with each passing day.Why wait change for better needs to be done in our youth that will liberate the truth. Put up sites for free, not only for $ but for the heart, God bless
Joel -
You've gotten some amazing advice here so I'm just going to add a favorite quote of mine from Erma Bombeck that inspired me as I transitioned from practicing law to being a 60 yr old techie with a Wordpress mobile website solution. Who could have imagined!! May these words bring encouragement as you reinvent:
"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I wouldn't have a single bit of talent left and could say - I used everything you gave me."
Karen
P.S. Midlife's a trip! Enjoy the ride:-)
Well, sometimes when I am not sure as to what to do or whether to do something I find it helpful to think about my question for a min. or so and then do some reading in the scriptures or even study on a topic in the bible. The bigger the question the more reading or study I need to do. During this time you need to be aware of situations that come up.
Thanks Joel, great post, nice vision and you have shared some interesting things, you have a lot of options there. Keep doing what your doing buddy.
Joel, I can envision attending (or managing) a local chapter of a monthly "Joel Comm Mastermind Meeting" with groups nationwide, based on your teachings. You'd be able to help a whole lot of people with a minimum investment of time.
By the Way, I have also learned how to say "no" to potential business dealings within the past year. The hardest part for me was getting over the fact that it was in my best interest to turn them down, even though I knew they were profitable. Most people probably think I'm nuts turning down profitable work nowadays; unless they have also experienced the downside of being overwhelmed with too many "profitable" jobs coming at them all at the same time.
In hindsight, I truly believe being able to say "no", for reasons other than if a project is profitable or not, is one of the most important milestones on the path to living an all-around "rich" life (I mean both financially rich and emotionally rich).
Joel, I've been a reader and follower of you for quite some time now. What you do in your life is the decision only you and your family can make. With that being said, I have truly come to appreciate your efforts to stand up to sleezy internet marketing tactics. In my eyes, you have almost become a hero as you fight to always put the reader in a better place by sharing your insights and wisdom. Perhaps there's a new career opportunity there, "Joel Comm, Super Hero of the Internet!" :)
Anyway, good luck with your decision. I look forward to reading more content from you (not hired writers).
Cheers,
Jason
When you are an old soul (I believe you are) in a 47 year-old body, you have the capability to dig deep into your memory to ask yourself what is your mission in life.
There's a belief that in heaven at the birth of each child, a mission is already planned by the Lord for them. If so, are you fulfilling your mission? Or are you being distracted?
You were right in withdrawing for awhile from the material world for re-assesment and self-examination of your life situation. It's good that you have re-emerged.
But have your thoughts and feelings been resolved? Or have these conflicts persisted or only suppressed, leading to further distress?
Learn to discard the unnecessary. Thousands go depressed if not insane because their mind go forward while their heart is elsewhere.
What should you do next? You are asking your readers insights on what you can give to life.
I've been following you since 2007 (at least in this physical world) and I can say you are brilliant in creating games.
Some games or warcraft against youth violence. There is an increase of violence among the young in school, at home and against themsekves. Youth suicide is on the rise across the globe. Another are some games for prevention of Alzheimers. In the US alone about 30% of the total population from aged 60 and above will have Alzheimers in 20130.
Think what you can give back to life even though many users are not able to reciprocate.
Hi Joel - I was wondering where you 'disappeared' to. Good to see you are back.
Personally, a 30 year marriage over, a loss of enthusiasm, a lack of motivation, a lack of direction, 18 months away from the Internet.
Then, one morning, I took myself by the scruff of the neck and screamed, "SNAP OUT OF IT!"
First thing I thought of doing was to help others who found themselves in the same situation, so i created http://evolution2020.com I am on MY evolution and I want others to join with me.
Perhaps that's what YOU need to do Joel. Focus on a special way that you can help others who have tried for years and failed.
Sure, this is the sort of thing you have been doing all along, but there must be a particular 'subject' that you could focus on and develop something that helps yourself as well as others.
It's food for thought?
I look forward to hearing/reading about your new focus and new direction. I am sure it will be AWESOME!
Kind regards and best wishes always,
John in Australia
I am from Iligan City Philippines, a place recently devastated from typhoon Sendong and witnessed how life can be taken any time. Awareness of the shortness of life and assessing how we make use of our life here on earth, is I think , one important factor why people change their priorities in life.
Best wishes,
Teresita
it wont add value here if i share my story here...moments of desperation that happened during the past two years. i can see some "desperate/loss" situations/comments out here - that i think you can do something truly inspiring and perhaps life changing. FREE IS GOOD. CREATE CHAMPION (your readers) IN EACH COUNTRY/CITY through the power of the internet. Success breed Success. Alas, if i ask, there is no guarantee that i will get. if i dont ask, it is certain as death/day light that I will not get.

You are at an interesting crossroads! Follow your heart and your God-given talents. Have you ever thought about running for president of the United States of America? What about having a conversation with Donald Trump? Never lose sight of your ultimate goals and where you want to be when you grow up. Be prepared to make some twists and turns, but think about where you want to be at various turning points on the path and don't let yourself stray too far on this wonderful journey you have ahead of you. Think of this as creating your own GPS. Two things I would recommend is to simplify, and have fun!
Joel, You have been great at adding to and contributing your expertise and experience to the marketing community for years now.
With this new opportunity in evaluating how you're going to invest the next years of your life and hearing you many times express your faith, have you ever considered going into full-time ministry and using your expertise or gifts to make an impact with people around the world?
I've been doing ministry for 16 years and it has been an incredible journey.
Wishing you great time on your new ventures :-))
Joel
It's Mike Kraft..I have been following your business since I met you. I have always appreciated your strait forward attitude and I agree it's always good to hear what others thoughts are.
I have been struggling online for about 5 years and I think the reason is because I have not found a niche I am truely passionate about.
I seem to never jump in head first because I am always worried I will be stuck in a business I don't enjoy in a few years.
In my opinion your biggest strength is writing. Consider writing another book on a topic that may or may not be Internet Marketing related.
In the mean time enjoy the life you have worked hard for and do good things :)
Being in that there are already 77 comments at the time of this posting, coupled with the fact that mine ran quite long, I decided to publish my insights in response to your question on my own personal blog.

Hello Joel,
The world needs people like you. You have your own potential to effect positive change in the world.
My heroes are people like Jesus Christ, Ted Turner, Bill and Melinda Gates, Bill Clinton, Sir Richard Branson, Dr. K.P. Yohannan & Family, Madre Teresa, Princess Diana - they gave and still giving of themselves, without expecting anything back!
Hey! Go for it, Sir Joel Comm! And have a blessed journey in Messiah!
Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Proverb 16:3

Do what makes you happy. Make sure you enjoy life to it's fullest while you are young and able to. If taking a break or working fewer projects makes sense, do it. If you go stir crazy not being busy with lots of stuff, then do more projects.
It sounds like you enjoy the slower lifestyle, so keep it slow and minimize things. Spend more time with family and delegate more of the business to trusted associates.
G'day Joel,
With so many responses you probably won't get to read this but I really hope you do.
Would you ever consider giving out a detailed outline of your Direct Rank program.
The Direct Rank absolutely rocked as far as I was concerned. It didn't increase my rank any or even my traffic by much BUT I have never received so many orders in one month.
Long story as to why I dropped out but I would love to know what precisely what the program did the was so successful for me.
Teach me how to fish and you will always have a place at my dinner table.
Richard
Thanks for all the great comments! I didn't mean to communicate that I am unhappy in where I am right now. I do have some ideas about where I want to go next, but I really wanted to hear what others had to say. I've read all the comments and I am moving towards a particular action which I will announce in a week or so. It's just one piece of the puzzle which is still being unboxed so it can be put together. I suspect it may take me the rest of my life to see how it looks when all the pieces are in place!
I think your statement above,"just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should do it." At the end of the day, I think you would find those things that...not only you can do...but should do...because you uniquely alone can do them...will be the things you want to be remembered for. With discipline, people can learn to do things they are not all that innately gifted to do. They may do it for survival. They may do it to imitate others simply because they are not sure of their own gifts and the direction to go with those gifts. But the people we truly notice are the people who are gifted and know they are gifted and use those gifts in a unique way that they consider meaningful to themselves and society. Only you can decide what that means to you.
Hi Joel,
Congratulations. It seems like this is the time for many of us to look at our lives, a time to stop and listen to what our hearts are telling us. You have given so much with your newsletters and fantastic insight into the internet. I have really learned more over the last few years thanks to you.
I'm not sure why I'm sharing this maybe It's because I'm at that point in life I should have a better understanding of life but instead I just wasted each and every day God blessed me with and now I only have a very short time left. So if I'm asked to lend a hand or anything I can do you bet I'm going to do my best to help others! Please don't don't let life pass you by knowing you could have done more to make life a better place for those who really need it!
Well done! You've inspired so many people and have given some of them direction! I think maybe I should re access my life after so many failures to make this year a better one for moi
Hi Joel,
I think the best thing you can do is take some time to spend some quality time with Joel. The other thing you may want to look into is Lifebushido. I don't know very much about it at this point but Steve Kantor, the owner seems to be a very unique and high speed individual. He asked me if I knew three entrepeneurs. You're the first person I thought of. I'd appreciate your response to the following Joel if you have time:
Seeking ideas on small business Time Management challenges
I am applying for a job with a company that helps small business owners with part-time virtual assistant services and they also help with Time Management issues. As part of process, I am seeking to collect the top three Time Management Challenges of a few small business entrepreneurs.
What are the top three Time Management Challenges you have with running or growing your business?
Thanks in advance for replying!
If anybody else wishes to reply please do.
Thanks,
John Latham
congratulations for this very story enriquecedora.que this year 2012 we can learn together.
I would like to follow in your footsteps marqueting online. grateful Cristiano Santos
I get it, Joel! Like the old Dan Fogelberg lyric, "Where do you go when you get to the end of your dream". Not saying you don't have any more dreams but I get the point. Still following your stuff but not getting much done. I make enough "to keep me in candy bars". All the best to you and thanks for the inspiration.
Hi Joel
We met at a Dolf wealth summit in flordia a couple of years ago. I live in california but decided to go in part to learn about: you, your products and service. I was there hoping to find a way to generate some cash for a non-profit childrens' group that myself and two others started eleven years ago. I felt good and excited about my purchase. I got home with no product and it took a long time and pain to get it worked out. I was not sure at first if my situtation was by design or just one of those simple things in life that happen. Later i decided that it was just one of those things. Well i think that you should never grow up, grow younger instead. Listen to that voice inside and seek what makes you feel complete what ever that my be. I think you already know so for for it.
Joel
I can relate with the title. Life was so much easier when I was a workaholic at least more focused. Most people take life for granted then one day it hits them (usually through tragedy) that we are not immortal and we start wondering if we have went down the right path for all concerned. I have been trying to play this google adsense game with great expectations, but have not been impressed. I have missed a lot of things in my own family due to this dangling carrot. I also have been trying to figure out what I want to do. I know for a fact that I hate corporate world. It totally drains the life out of you. I wanted to have a business on the internet that makes a difference in others and allows me to help people financially more often. I nearly lost my wife several years back and my path changed (read my blog). I really could care less about a job! If you want to pick each others brains or maybe join together in something I'll entertain the idea.
God bless
Hy Joel!
I think what You did is the best thing You could. I'm 26 years old, and I'm about to become an online entrepreneur either. My goal is to become a "free man". I'm living in Hungary and I realy had enough working for 300 Dollars in three shifts a month and living from day to day. I don't want to spend my life working for pocket money, I want to be with my family. You inspired me a lot of times and show us that the online money making works. In my opinion, You should sit back, relax and enjoy life. But if You still want to do something for Your "fans", then I think You should write a book about how You became the person that we all know. One of the best online entrepreneurs.
Best wishes
P.S.: Sorry for my english.
