Would You Watch Me Lose 40 Pounds?

Posted on September 7, 2010 6:09 AM by Joel Comm

I've got a confession to make.

I am fat.

That's not P-H-A-T as in "cool".

That's F-A-T as in chunky, large, and overweight.

On top of that, I am not physically fit.

It's no surprise.

As an online entrepreneur who spends a lot of time in front of a computer, I've become sedentary.

It's a fairly common story.

Once upon a time I was both slim AND physically fit.

In fact, you might be surprised to discover that I ran a marathon when I was a teenager. I completed a 26.2 mile run in Montreal in the late seventies.

In college, I stayed fit by doing aerobics.

But then it happened.

I got married. We had children. Life got busy.

And I put on weight.

In 2003, I got sick of being overweight. I peaked out around 215 pounds and thought it was time to do something.

Long story short. I got myself down to 180 pounds. I was feeling good.

And then I went on a Caribbean cruise. That did me in.

Since that time, I have ballooned up to 225 pounds.

Yikes!

I have been on medication for high blood pressure for a number of years.

And I get winded walking up several flights of stairs.

It's time for a change.

After all, I've got the rest of my life ahead of me.

I want to be healthy for my family, for my business and for the work I have yet to do.

The bottom line is I need to lose about 40 pounds to get where I want to be.

And why exactly am I telling you this?

I'm not a fitness expert. I don't aspire to be.

I'm not a nutrition expert. I like to eat foods that taste good and are bad for me.

But what I am is a regular guy who has the same struggles that many of you do.

My goals as an author and speaker have always been to inspire, to educate and to entertain.

I believe you must first inspire people in order to open their hearts so they can receive what you have to say.

Then you must deliver valuable content that can be put into use by anyone listening or reading.

And it helps if it goes down with a spoonful of sugar. This is especially present when I am on stage as I like to clown around.

Anyhow, as I have been thinking about the next step in my journey and realizing that taking care of myself must play an integral role, I have had an idea.

What if I made my quest for better health a public exercise?

I am considering using the web, video and social media to hold myself accountable to do what I need to do.

By broadcasting regular videos to you, I could accomplish a few things...

1) I would be "putting myself out there." It's one thing to make a commitment to myself. It's another to know that many others are watching to see what happens.

2) My quest could be an inspiration to others with similar needs. That would fulfill the first goal of my professional career.

3) I could use this platform for others to learn alongside me. By interviewing experts and discussing the issues that revolve around better health, I would fulfill my second professional goal to be a source of valuable information. Topics would include everything from cravings for sugar and how to eat out, to setting goals and choosing the right exercise regimen.

4) I could encourage those who follow to help me in supporting a worthwhile cause along the way. That would fulfill my goal to "do good stuff."

5) Finally, I think it would be entertaining and a lot of fun. How many New York Times Best-selling authors and international speakers do you know that would put themselves out there like this? Yes, it's scary. But I see so many positive things happening as a result. I am almost feeling compelled to do it.

So there you have it. That's the gist of what I am considering.

Here's the question for you.

Would you be interested in watching me go through this process?

Would it be inspirational for you to follow along?

Do you want to talk about the issues surrounding health in today's world?

Or could you care less what I do?

As I said, I am not trying to portray myself as a health expert of any kind.

I just know I need to make a change.

And I am going to make that change.

The question is do I want to invite everyone into the process.

If I do invite you in, who knows... it may change you as well.

What are your thoughts?

As always, I am eager to hear your comments.

Thousands of people read my blog and emails each day, but only a small percentage actually interact and leave comments.

Would you please take the time to share your thoughts with me today?

This would be a major step for me and I really need to hear from you.

Note: PLEASE do not use comments to pitch me on the latest diet fad or network marketing program. I am not looking for advice at this time, or another business to get into. I will not approve comments with links to MLM programs and such. Thanks for respecting this request.

With that said, let's hear from you!

Good for you, Joel! The first step is to resolve to take action and then get started.

As you already are well aware, there is a lot of good information about health and fitness on the web, and there's also a lot of crap.

If you follow people like Dr. Al Sears for fitness advice, Dr Joe Mercola and Dr. Mark Hyman for nutrition advice you'll be on solid ground.

I'd love to hear about your progress and victories in your quest to find the fit Joel within.

Best of luck in your journey!

Ron Matthews

Go for it Joel! You're a public figure now, and weight loss is a constant topic of interest, hence the multi-billion dollar weight loss industry in this country.
Um, while you're at it, could you lose a few pounds for me too?
Thanks!

Joel-

I am in the internet marketing field as well. And I feel your pain. I was in the same boat. I ballooned up to 220lbs. I just completed a round of P90X and dropped over 40lbs and I am in the best shape of my life!

I would love to help you in this process, and have become a "coach" for P90X. Its all free - I am just there to help you through the program and help you with the nutrition end of it. (Trust me - questions DO pop up)

If you are REALLY serious about getting back in shape - I would LOVE to help - I have a very strong passion for helping people get healthy.

Let's talk! You have my email!

Jayson

To be honest, I have been bouncing at around 200-190 pounds myself and lately I am feeling really bad about it.
My main problem is that I am too lazy to go to the super market and prepare something, so I end up eating junk every day.

I would be really interested to hear what you have in mind.

I was thinking maybe to create a blog of daily or weekly self portraits with weight info to keep me on track.

Joel, for real I want to lose at least 40 pounds too I was at 226 earlier and then I started drinking soup every day, playing soccer twice a week and then I hit 209 after about 2 weeks. Then I went out a couple of beers and BOOM 213.2 as of last night.

I am now vowing to lose at least 40 pounds - I will work with you following your exact model EVERYDAY (trust me no incentive needed), but how do we do this - IM lost will it be Jenny Craig or something like that.

If you can come up with a list of things to do every week I will follow it while you do too.

Way to go! This is the toughest life altering vision I have seen. Go Jo!

Great idea Joel! Becoming healthy and fit is the most important thing you can do for yourself and your family. Now is the best time - it gets more difficult the older you are!

The sedentary lifestyle of so many Americans has contributed greatly to our epidemic of obesity, and I blame a lot of this on the computer as well as fast food.

Well Joel... it happens to the best of us. I too was way too fat for way too long after sitting at a computer for about 13 years... not in one go obviously!

Long and short of it is, that I was diagnosed a Diabetic in May this year which placed a whole new focus on my health.

I know you didn't want to be pitched the latest diet fad so here's how I lost 3 stone in 3 months...

Eat less.
Eat the right things.
Do at least 1/2 hour of strong exercise every day... and I mean every day without fail.

Look forward to the vid's
Good Luck, Cheers, Steve

Do it bro! I'll follow you as we're in the same boat...

Ian del Carmen

Go for it! I am trying to lose 40 pounds myself. Men lose different than women, so give some suggestions for women also. Also ideas for older (60)+ people who are trying to get or stay in shape. Thanks and good luck.

I need to lose 30 pounds on my 5'2" frame. I would love to follow along with you.

Go for it. Better to do it know cuz it just gets harder as you get older. Theres nothing worse than being over weight and trying to do stuff with the kids and family. Plus you need to be the inspiratiion for the family because the old saying holds true. With out you health all the money in the world doesn't matter. Ok , you could get people to do your work but you get the drift.
Check out transformations web site with Bill Phillips who was from your neck of the woods in Golden,Co. Best of Luck

Joel,

To be honest, you should do this first and foremost for YOU regardless of what others think, although what you said about making yourself accountable is spot on! I think you should do this and hope that it inspires others as you go.

It is important for people in the public eye to take on challenges like this especially when what you teach and motivate people to do encourages them to sit on their backsides all day ; )

Like you, I used to be super fit (skydiving, football, running, cycling etc) but then after I had worked online for around 4 years, I "suddenly" noticed that I had put on 3 stone (20kg or 44lbs) and I felt it. I couldn't walk downstairs without holding onto the bannisters and running was a no-no...I had pains everywhere.

I signed up for a charity event (Enduro Africa) late 2008 which required 10 days off road moto-x over 1000 miles of rough terrain in South Africa and had a year to get in shape.

I made myself accountable like you suggest and went for it. I lost all the weight in less than 6 months and I am now (2 years later) still doing it and I am fitter than when I was in my "peak" in my 20's (I am now 43)...I even have a 6 pack...woohoo!

All the time I trained I was still able to eat pizza's, curry, Chinese food and all my favourites in moderation. I won't mention any programs but seriously urge you to look into it properly as doing the wrong thing can make things worse (although I know you are an intelligent guy and know that already)!

Anyway, I look forward to watching you progress as I am sure most people would want to see you do this so good luck with it!

Nick

Call it 'the biggest internet loser' and weigh in and everything! I'd watch :P

sean

Joel, I was a little disappointed by your article. Your email sent out Sept 7th stated: "Click below to read the entire article and find out what I am thinking of doing!". By doing, I naturally assumed you are speaking about your weight issue. However the article above listed nothing of what you will be "doing" instead focused on the problem and if you will include others in your journey. While there are a lot of programs out there, I enjoy reading what works for individuals and how others incorporate changing their life style into something more healthy and inspiring. I will be interested in reading (if you choose to post) your health care choices. All the best, Phil

I applaud your decision Joel. I'm in the same boat (in spades). I'm tipping the scales at a bit over 300 lbs these days. Needless to say I'll be following your progress closely and listening for whatever tips you have that are working for you.

Continue doing good stuff :)

You can do it! I think this is a great idea for you! As someone who works from home too, one of the biggest challenges I find is making fitness a lifestyle and not just a chore. I love fitness and working out but it's not always easy for me either. But it's so necessary in our lives. When we leave this earth, we take NOTHING with us so we might as well take care of the "temple" God gave us! I wish the best of luck in your fitness endeavours now and for the future. :)

Hi Joel:

What a brave thing to do! As you say, most people wouldn't advertise that they were going to lose weight. it's putting it out there and that's great. I hope you choose something you can adhere to as a life change (diet does have the word die in it). When you slow down and enjoy every bite consciously, it's amazing that you don't need to finish your plate and can stop when you've had enough. Obviously exercise is part of the bundle and also scary (at least for me).

So I wish you the very best
Sandra

Whether you decide to make your journey public or not, I'm totally proud of you for stepping up to the plate and taking care of your #1 business asset... you and your health.

I would love to hear how your new healthy habits and change in lifestyle impact your business and how your improved health, fitness, and energy allow you to enjoy your business successes even more.

I just saw pictures of Tom Beal's recent transformation and love to hear how great he feels after making his healthy lifestyle change.

Health and weight gain is a real issue for us Internet Marketers. We put in a lot of butt time, there's no doubt about that. It's easy to becoming completely focused on business and put health and fitness on the back burner until your product launch is over or your get a few projects out of the way. Before you know it you are looking at a different person in the mirror.

I became an Internet Entrepreneur in large part for the freedom and happiness. But if I sacrifice my health and gain a significant amount of weight in the process, there is a certain amount of freedom that I am robbing from myself.

I'm really looking forward not only to your personal transformation, but how your lead will impact others in the process. Thanks for becoming a positive role model Joel.

Joel -

I think this is an EXCELLENT thing to do - and I'd like to support you in any way that I can. Making your goals public - or telling others about them - is an important step in success! I have another friend who did this, although he struggled with using the Internet/Social Media successfully. I helped with his (Ultimate Fitness Quest) project and wrote a lot of the nutrition & fitness resources for it, and served on his panel of experts. I don't know if you'll remember me but I did a testimonial for you at Loral's Alumni Event in 2009 - and I have learned a LOT from you through your Elevate DVD's. I've got "Ka-ching" en route from Amazon - and I already have one of the buttons (the one from the Alumni you left behind).
If you'll contact me I'd be happy to make any/all of those resources available to you as well, and I can help you by providing you with a customized nutrition plan and exercise recommendations. I'd be happy to work with any other experts you might put on your team.
I am well qualified in this area as both a certified Nutrition & Corporate Wellness Coach, and I have a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology ...
Please let me know how/if I can help you - I'd LOVE to be a part of your project and I am certain you can turn your health around - as I did. A few years ago my health, weight, etc. was out of control - and I turned my health and appearance around a few years ago while in my late 40's ...
To get a Nutrition Plan (not anything crazy - this is all based on science and totally safe and doable - not a "diet" but an educational tool to teach you to eat correctly for the results you want for LIFE!)
Contact me if I can help - kay@kayrice.com :) It would be an honor!

Hi Joel-

My hat is off to you as you have taken the first step, recognizing the problem and setting a goal. Having people help hold you accountable is also going to be important to your success.

I did just that in February of 2008. I set out to go from 265 to 195 by Christmas of 2008. I actually made it by the end of October 2008.

The good news is that although I have gone up and down a bit since, I have maintained my weight goal overall.

I'd like to monitor your progress, so do keep me posted. If you are interested, and only if you are interested, I posted a link to the steps I took. Although the site is ad supported (Hah! Haven't earned a dime) the site is not selling anything. I've just chronicled the steps I took.

Best regards,

Jerry

Wow, Joel, I had the same idea...! In fact, except for your name and the "Best-Selling authors" part, I could have written the same blog post. I lost about 50 pounds 20 years ago and kept it off for a dozen years. But then life changes and busy-ness slowly took their toll and I regained all that weight. It's not an easy thing to do and I feel that it's probably going to be harder at this age, as my activity level is not what it used to be. But nothing's impossible unless you say it is! So I hope you endeavor on your quest, and I'll consider going along with you. To your success in ALL you do!

Joel

Good Luck and yes I will follow. At 210, I need to lose 30 lbs so let us know what and how you are doing it.

Hi Joel

Why don't you call up your buddy Dan Nickerson and do the program he was supposed to do. I talked to Dan a couple times and I do not know if he ever finished.

Thanks

Brad

Absolutely! There's every reason for you to start losing that 40 pounds NOW!

Hi Joel,

Your idea is an interesting one. At first I had thoughts like, that's honest, brave, refreshing and then, something bigger hit me. You have effectively created your own regime, a world not governed by regular employment, a wealthy lifestyle where you can, in theory, live the dream of doing whatever you want, whenever you want. So, how come it isn't easier to take an hour here and there for the basic stuff - a run and a walk? I think this is an issue that should bother a lot of us.

I work from home, I write a lot, spend too much time in front of the keyboard and I have more time now than ever. But, I don't use it wisely. I am not disciplined to make time as, frankly, my day drifts all to easily. That has to be a problem for us 'internet people' wouldn't you say?

So, whereas all the social media of what your doing is, as I've said, honest and perhaps brave - I would think that part of the message has to be a warning to all of us who sit on a certain part of our anatomy for too long each day to - get off it! Prevention rather than a very public (in your case) cure?

Just a thought. Good luck to you!

Ben

Support you.
First of all, just start a little steps. Doing exercise, swimming, gym whatever.
Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Good luck.

Go for it Joel!

Whatever you do, DON'T DIET! Eat good stuff and start getting some proper exercise - but make changes that you know you can turn into proper lifestyle changes,, rather than short-term fixes. This is my personal soapbox - I've even written a free ebook called "Big Fat Lies" about the inequities of the diet and weight loss industry and how people get conned into wasting time and money on ridiculous diet programs. Good luck and keep us posted!

Mike Barrows

Joel, I'm a certified personal trainer who is trying to learn the ropes of internet marketing. In the past I've helped hundreds lose weight and feel better. Yes...you should definitely do it! But, you have to do it, more for you than anyone else, bringing everyone else on the ride is a great way to hold yourself accountable and hopefully inspire others as well. Being a public figure, it's great that you can inspire and a be role model for others to follow. So, when you put yourself out there and become vulnerable enough to share with those following you...you become real! Wishing you the best and believing you can do it! If I can help you...don't hesitate to contact me.
Burt

Hey Joel,

I commend you for this and I feel inspired to follow along and start my own challenge but it won't be public, don't have the guts :-(

I know what the sedentary lifestyle of working in front of a computer brings. Since working at home I gained 15 lbs and I aim to loose it in the next two months (tough with the upcoming holidays but I plan on it).

Anyway I think that you SHOULD make it public as you will definitely inspire more than just a few to improve their lifestyles as well.

- Crystal

Hi Joel,

Now that's an honest post. It's a great idea to put yourself out there
and make the commitment. You will see it will change your life and
in fact I think when you wrote the post you already felt so much better.

Further it's just simple if you ask me; vary up your meals
every day, lots of nice salades and a glass of wine once or twice per week.

Don't do anything strange or heavy programs..

I once saw an interview with the great Mick Jagger. He eats light, lots
of water and did some exercises for 15 minutes. Each day. Never, never
skip a day. That's the secret.

Make it simple for yourself in that way you're good to go..

Good luck!

Stefan

Joel, there's only several million of us in the same predicament. Of course it would be inspirational to watch and learn with you as you get healthier! I am one week into the same decision and down 6.5 lb with the first thing that's actually worked well for me after trying just about everything else.

I agree that having a public audience would probably help you stick with it AND let us everyone else see that it's not a straight path. There's going to be bad days, setbacks, plateaus etc. That's how it works.

Good for you for taking the bull by the horns, cuz your family and friends want to have you around for a long time to come, Lord willing.

Becki

Hi Joel,

I definitely think you should make this public. Once you do, there's no turning back!

I am not sure the condition your wife is in, or how she's planning to support your goal, but as a woman, I would love it if she was part of this too. It's going to make you stronger as a couple and assure family members won't sabotage your efforts (oh yeah, include the kids too).

Whatever you decide. I know you can do it, and I support you,
Biggi

Joel

I think it is a great idea. There is already all the information ever needed in order to lose weight and maintain a healthy fit lifestyle.

The missing ingredient for most people is motivation, momentum and ACCOUNTABILITY!

Once you start you will have no choice but to keep everybody updated and thus we will be feeding you inspiration.

Best wishes!

Hi Joel,

I'm a guy who is in the same boat as you. I'd like to drop 40 pounds for the sake of myself and my family. Any pointers or tips that you may discover along the way would be helpful to hear. I would encourage you to give this a try and keep me posted along the way.

Thanks,

Jim

Joel,

I like this.

I am in need of doing something myself. I fall into the category of, "I'll start Monday" or "when I get back from this trip, then I will start."

As a professional firefighter, I already have enough risk to deal with. Did you know that the #1 cause of firefighter deaths, on the fire ground, is from heart attacks? We put tons of stress on our hearts when you go from sleeping to going into a fire, but being unfit does play a role.

I have a young family that I simply cannot imagine not being around for them.

I saw a report on the news that said people who enroll in weight loss programs that are "online" are more successful. The aspect of accountability and teamwork all pull together with your group of online work out buddies and people feel almost obligated to not let the team down.

My suggestion is a forum or website with the Joel Comm Fitness Challenge Team, or whoever. Weekly progress reports, pictures, tips, help, encouragement, teamwork.

Together, the group will achieve its goals.

Far as wide open or limited number, thats your call. If you do it, I want to be the first to sign up!

Your right it has happened to me also, doing ten thousand steps a day now that's about thirty steps a minute or 110 minutes of movement and drinking water every time I feel hungry. And eating sensible smaller potions.

Taking all of the fun out of life like, food, slouching, watching TV, drinking beer, resting etc.

Watch you........mmmmm, Lets not take this to far, probaby enjoy listening to you suffering, grunt, groan. I was thinking of using those dark eye covers you see these actresses put over their eyes to go to sleep.

I'm hating every delightful moment of it, even walking in the rain.

I do a straight 30 minutes in the morning and do six twelve minutes walks on the 48th minute of every for six hours so I'm not stting to long.

How exciting! They say that we all need a witness to our lives, and this is just a bold and rather inspirational way to conquer a GOAL. Joel, I think this serves as great motivation, not only for you, but for all of us who are now witnesses to this challenge!

Most of us work extremely hard in one or two areas of our lives, but tend to put little effort in the health and fitness area. Why? Because it's hard. It's hard to be in shape. It's hard to live a balanced life. Yet, sooner or later we realize that we must put more effort in this area if we want to continue improving on other areas. If we don't have good health or we just don't feel good about ourselves, we will not be inspired to work hard at achieving a great life!

Joel, this goes for you and everyone reading your blog... you may have as many witnesses to your life as you wish, but the most important witness is YOURSELF!

GOOD FOR YOU, Joel!

When you achieve the weight and level of fitness you desire (remember those days when you could run a marathon!), every part of your life will feel better--even if marathon running is no longer a goal.

About five years ago my wife decided she had to lose weight. I agreed to go along with her (though I only needed to lose about 1/3 as much), and since I do almost all the cooking in the family (I work at home, and she worked long hours in a lab), I learned and re-learned a lot about making really delicious meals that also went along with the exercise and activities that helped get us to lower weights. She lost 35 lbs, I lost 10, and we've kept it level for over 3 years now--and EVERY DAY I'm so glad we did it.

I predict that you'll be glad too! BEST OF LUCK!

Just about 4 days ago my wife pointed at me and said "You are not taking good care of my body" ouch. So today I went walking/jogging.

Let's see you do it!

Joel,

Have you thought about putting a treadmill under your desk an slowly walking throughout the day?

Joe,

I'm in the same boat- my story is very similar to yours.I was lean and fit and after the marriage and sedentary way of life I put on 30 kg!! In 2001 I lost 36 and it was very motivational for bunch of my friends , too. But, Mr Yo- Yo didn't miss me- I did it again (balooned up to 75 kg). I'm with you and yes, it would be very inspirational for me to follow along!Let's do it!

Warmest regards,
Nitta

Gutsy move, Joel.

You go guy!

To your health!

I'd be interested watching you go through the process. I need to go through it myself.

Kudos to you!

Taking care of your health is not only an investment in yourself, it's an investment in your future and in your family's future. And the great part is, you already know you're going to look fantastic and feel better than you ever have in your life! It's also a great example to set for your kids. Think of the impact you will make touching not only the lives of those who follow your blog posts but your family as well. HUGE!

I just got back from a week-long fitness retreat in Colorado and I know about all the opportunities that you have to stay fit and active outdoors. No gym required!

So proud of your intention and I'm looking forward to hearing about your successes! Way to go, Joel! Let me know if I can help you.

Angie Jones

Relatability.

Hey Joel,

I like your idea.

To use snippets from your post.

=> I believe you must first inspire people in order to open their hearts so they can receive what you have to say.

I was working on my first blog post and my girlfriend commented that I was an engineer – someone “like them” not a Tony Robbins etc and hence they could relate and be inspired by my story. I don’t have a weight issue and can pretty well eat what I want with minimal exercise but any challenge is cross contextual and so as I wrestle with my challenges so to can I relate to you with yours.

=> Then you must deliver valuable content that can be put into use by anyone listening or reading.

Well, you know more about this than I do.

=> And it helps if it goes down with a spoonful of sugar. This is especially present when I am on stage as I like to clown around.

You do and you “sold” me. I met you at Wealth Master 09 in Newport Beach and bought your product because I believed and trusted you.

But…

I want the ugly stuff as well. The you know what, I really screwed this week up… If you had a really crap day / week be honest, blunt and real. And then your victories from that place as well.

Relatability.

Lastly have you got a lever strong enough to hold you account? I.e. I don’t know if they allow wifi when you’re on life support…

Thank you for who you are and what you have taught me.

Paul.

Way to go! This is the toughest life altering vision I have seen. Go Jo!

Joel,
Go ahead, do it!! If people tell you that they don't care whether you share your experience or not (which by the way I think they will care), that shouldn't matter to you. You should only care about your health, because you owe it to yourself and to your family. Then again, when you do something good, people will follow and will get inspired. So, do it!! You will see great things come out of it.
Go for 180!!
Ciao,
Jorge R.

Joel
I need to lose more than you ... when are you starting ? Would love to follow along and lose 40 lbs ... "Misery Loves Company"
Let me Know
Robert

Great idea Joel... I have thought the same thing about sharing via blogs etc.

Also - this is Healthy Aging month - so your timing is perfect.

I am creating an event around this in Northern Colorado - likewise to help others etc so please contact me if you would like to participate.

Thanks
Jay Jacoby

Hey Joel:

I was at exactly the weight you are now about 5 years ago. I lost 40 lbs. in around 3 mos. I did it using the original edition of the South Beach Diet. Followed the suggested recipes after I read his explanation on why this way of eating is beneficial. The first 20 lbs. came off in about 6 weeks. It was amazing!

The South Beach Diet is pretty simple. Cut out all white and processed foods. It's a little more in-depth than that of course but that's the basics. I've basically changed my eating habits based on what I learned in that book and have kept the weight off. BTW, I am not a health nut and don't work out (much to the dismay of my wife).

On a completely different topic; why don't you use the Socrates Theme for this blog?

Cheers,
David

From the outpouring of comments and the passion with which people have already given their affirmation, I cannot see how you can do anything but make this a public venture. As one who has also put on the baby weight, marriage weight, and eaten the "I deserve it" candy bar over and over . . . I could also stand to make some changes. I know my husband would echo my sentiments when I say that we NEED this, probably more than anything else you've done in your career. So, Joel, go ahead and inspire, put yourself out there, and make it entertaining. We're on board with you, and we'll look forward to seeing a lot less of you and ourselves at the finish line! : )

Hi Joel. I too need to lose about 40 pounds. I too want to help inspire people in a similar situation. I purchased the domain www.FlatTummyTips.com to show my progress and give tips on how to get that flat tummy that we all desire, but I have not been keeping my site updated. Your post today has inspired me to continue. Maybe I can show your videos on my site. I bet there are a lot of people who want to lose weight with you. Let me know how I can help.

DeaconDavid

YES,YES and YES are my answers to your Questions.

Let's do it together! I'll follow you.
I need to lose 20 pounds myself. I,m in!

Widar

I applaud you for speaking openly and honestly about your weight. This is an issue that I share with you as do many others. My weight gain came on as a result of stress eating in challenging economic times. In my efforts to become financially free and lose the excess weight,I noticed that similar actions needed to be taken.

The result is my blog, http://www.skinny-and-rich.com. My premise is to stay extremely focused on getting skinny and rich and if my actions don't support either one, pass. The only exception being family.

What's come up is the process of getting started, the obstacles, the progres and my feelings about how it's affecting my life on a deep level.
If this was easy we would have done it already.

I look forward to watching your progress and wish you the best of luck and support. I hope we are both successful in our journeys.

Here's an idea: WHAT ABOUT A CHALLENGE? That would make it more interesting and add a healthy bit of competition to the mix. What do you think?

Best regards,
Lynn

I already think of you as the biggest loser. I say go for it!

Joel,
I totally agree with everyone who said you have to do it for yourself. It may sound harsh, or selfish, but it's truly only for yourself. Of course, the outcome is beneficial for everyone around you, immediate family, kids, etc...

If you make it public it's ok, but the main driver will be in you. I did the same thing and washed off 50Lb. Walking, then started running, which didn't work bc of knees, then started biking, heavily. And that took it off all. My story is linked up there and you can unlink it after reading, but it's all true. It really worked and I didn't starve at all. I ate almost exactly the same as before, except I was burning everything. Even my (diabetes 2) blood sugar level dropped from 14.7 to 5.9, which is for me revolutionary :)

Anyway, good luck and I support the initiative, since I can take off 10 more pounds.

Greetings Joel,

You've hit the nail right on the head with this one.

As wonderful as computers are for ringing up the cash, sitting behind this thing all day does take its toll on us IM'ers; and everyone else who depends on them to earn a living for that matter, including the 9-5 crowd.

I believe that your idea in this regard is an excellent one, as people are motivated by those that they admire. This is definitely the solution to the infomercial dilemma that you talked about recently, and it makes for excellent positive PR.

I myself have made it a habit recently to use the recreational facilities in my neighborhood on a daily basis to get a handle, no pun intended, on my own 50 pounds of excess baggage that needs to go the way of the dinosaur.

Looking forward to how it all turns out! :)

Warmest Regards and Best Wishes,

Felix Torres

Even as someone who works out regularly and writes a fitness blog full of weight loss advice, I too have put on a few pounds by joining the internet marketing game and sitting all day. No matter what diet or gimmick you use, at the end of the day it's calories in vs calories out. I would love to see your progress on this.

Joel:

I think it's awesome! Yes America will want to see your transformation - no doubt.

The question is always the same...are you moving towards health, or away? It's either one or the other. By reducing your weight, increasing your muscle mass and changing the environment of your cells, its impossible not to become healthy - simply impossible. How much you want to bet you will be able to ditch any meds your on to boot?

Remember what gets measured gets managed. Find someone to do a bioimpediance test on you before you start. Good luck! I will be cheering you on.
Dr Kelly

Go for it Joel,

Just let me know when you start and what you
did for the day and I'll do the same here.

I'll do the challenge with you.

I guess you've something inside your brain.
Hopefully, to attack one of the most profitable
market.

Well going.

Make it happen, then maybe u can write another book.

Hi Joel

I know you said you don't need any advice but i'm compelled to share how i lost weight.

I used to do martial arts and tried countless other ways of exercising and eating.

Some things did work but were so hard i just didn't want to do them long term.

So long story short, i found a way from trial and error where i now eat healthy Mon-Fri and also exercise mon to fri for just 30 minutes (cardio).

It's not killer exercise and the food is just healthy (no processed food) and tastes good. And i also watch my portion sizes.

It means i can eat whatever i want on the weekend (which is when there are more temptations for me), and i don't miss out on my favorite foods totally.

I've lost 2 stones and cannot see myself putting the weight back on since it is easy to do this long term.

This approach may not be for everyone but it really works and has helped me a lot

Good luck Joel
Jash

Hi Joel, I would love to follow your journey and at the same time be inspired to reverse the creeping pounds! I am looking for transparency and 'real' today!

All the very best,
Deborah

Joel - PLEASE, PLEASE DO THIS and not just for yourself...
This would be so appropriate and inspiring to why I have bought / am studying your stuff to start a video blog of my own journey of loosing 100 pounds (currently up around 300 with some recent success) via www.fatboyslims.net and just figuring out how I can use the socrates theme etc to get going... I have shot half a dozen flip video clips to date (rationale, reasons why, thoughts, feelings, successes and some how I am doing it stuff which I have yet to put up on the net and recently reached a plateau / needing to step up) but really keen to get the blog going and would love to follow your journey as well as make my own for anyone to see ... maybe we could be parallel fatbusting buddies and could share methods and experience or just 'keep on keeping on' support? (I know how hard it is to keep this up alone and keep the fat off but determined to add 10 years to my life expectancy with this once and for all mission - I turned 47 yesterday and with a 6 year old son recently diagnosed autistic I MUST live to support and see grow up as passionately expressed in my video clips to date.

Putting this out there for all to see will help you get the leverage to see it through (Tony Robbins suggests writing to people to let them know you are holding yourself to a higher standard in his 'Body You Deserve' program, which is one of my strategies and I thought why not tell the world though a video blog and help other ordinary people be around for loved ones that much longer too - using your stuff to reach out to them)

I pray you get to read this and feel inspired to follow through on your idea - I know I AM taking action on mine for THE most compelling reason in my life after 20+ years abusing my body with food - feel the fear, know it is real but do it anyway!

Best wishes
Kevin

Joel I am in the same boat and your story could be mine. There is plenty of information on the internet and elsewhere. As you can already see there are a lot of people who are passionate about you following their way of getting it done. I would be interested in following your journey and joining you on that path. The value is in sharing our story as we go through the process. The challenges, the victories, and the set backs.

Joel, I would love to see you do this, and even go along with you for the ride if the opportunity exists. I need to lose at least 40 pounds, but have not been successful. Like you, I've also thought about sharing the journey with my fans/followers as well.

Not sure if it's a coincidence, but got this Chippendales - 20 years later from forwarded funnies today. It's G-rated.

Mark

That sounds like a great plan Joel.
I for one would like to follow your progress.

I too market online and it has NOT been good for my waistline or my hip line AT ALL!!

I am with a group of people in a Skype chat and we have one gal that goes to the gym everyday. I mean she physically gets dressed and drives to the gym everyday. I can not imagine doing that.

I have often thought of starting a Online Virtual Gym....
I am sure I have every workout CD/Video ever produced. I also have about every piece of exercise equipment invented.... the old stuff and the new stuff since I do not think I have ever thrown anything away. I am sure many other people have that at home too. A Skype chat for encouragement and for a progress report and to say.. "OK Gang I am off to work out back in a bit..." Now even I could do that...maybe. This has not caught on YET!! But membership is open and at the moment it is free to join.

Anyway Best of Luck and I'll be looking for your updates.

Hi Joel,
I think it would be wonderful! I have recently lost 47 pounds and am at a standstill right now. I would like to lose another 25 or so pounds, but sometimes it gets frustrating!!

Would love to follow along and please tell us everything! What works, what doesn't, what's good, what sucks....what you like about the different foods, plans, exercise, etc. You know what I mean. :) Details.

Very excited to see this!

Take care and God bless!

Lisa~

Hi Joel,

You sound a lot like me (except for the money part).
I was 220 lbs, overweight, got tired walking up a couple flights of steps,
had high blood pressure (take 5 different meds for it everyday) and didn't look good in a bathing suit. I have lost as much as 25 lbs before, but it always finds it's way back.

Then, I got sick (stomach problems). I didn't want to end up on a hospital operationg room table, so I got serious about my diet. I cut out all salt and sugar (damn hard to do). I cut out meat (also damn hard) and chicken.
I even gave up coffee (addicted for the last 35 years).

I started eating fruits, veggies and occassionally some fresh fish and whole grain rice. I dropped 25 pounds, my blood pressure went down and the stomach problem stopped. This all happened over the past month.

I'm down to 195lbs and feeling good. It's not easy to do, but it's not that hard. I try to stick with my own cooking.

Hope that helps.
Best Wishes.

Carl Willoughby
Best Wishes,

Although

I'm thinking rather than watch you - join you!!! What a great idea for not only driving traffic, but building a network of supportive and encouraging friends.

I went through a 30 pound weight loss this summer. Then I has heart bypass surgery late July. Although I feel the best I have felt in several years, the surgery, on top of being unemployed, has made this a lees then fun time.

I would like to see how you will accomplish this. I'm rooting for your success.

joel, i have followed you for a whle now and i think that getting into shape is a very noble endeavor.

*applause*

The obesity and overweight epidemic is frightening. By recognizing your pattern of taking the weight off and then putting it right back on again, you have now seen that being healthy is a lifestyle choice that requires diligence and commitment. You are also very smart for using your position as an influencer to turn the magnifier on yourself, and use your public following as part of your accountability as you implement a plan to take the weight off safely and keep it off -- for life!

The only safe, sustainable way to lose weight and keep it off is a proper diet and exercise. Everything else is temporary, unsustainable, or unreliable.

There are tons of people who are great at helping people lose weight. And there are tons of books, DVDs, TV shows, and podcasts on the subject. You won't be hurting for resources. I threw mine on top of the pile a month ago as an eBook "Video Nurse: 50 Weight Loss Tips for Busy People" as part of my experience as a nurse and therapist the past 10 years of helping my clients be fit and healthy. I do my small part in helping people online and offline to get fit, and I'm not sorry to say I can't join you in losing 40 pounds, because if I did, I'd be severely underweight. Instead, there are people like myself who understand that we were meant to move our bodies (not be sedentary), and eat real food you were made for (translation: portion control and watch ingredients).

If you'd like to have a copy of my eBook, I'll send you a free one to review :). No MLM here, lol.

Warmly,
Imei

Great idea! Get moving asap! In 4 months I expect to see pics of you in the classic body building pose flexing your biceps and showing off your six pack! What's your body fat goal? Here's an idea: Create a Joel Comm Community Group Weight Loss Program where we can participate, too, and share our progress, 'cause I'm overweight, too, by at least 20 pounds! It could be sort of like Bill Phillip's Body for Life, but online for others to see. Participants could record our data & pics once every week or so and celebrate our progress. Just an idea, although by the time you got it up & running you could have already lost all the weight you want to lose! Weight Loss for Internet Marketing Nerds.... a website whose idea has come.

Think it would be great! We all get caught up in our work and forget ourselves, but shedding a few pounds would inspire the rest of us to do the same -- to find that "8th day of the week", as Tony Robbins and others allude to, and reclaim it. A balanced life isn't easy but that's why this show would be so valuable and inspiring.

Hey Joel

Good Luck, I just started a Socrates theme blog for the very same reason to loose weight, get fit and keep things in focus. I would be happy to help you stay vigilant.

all the best

John

Joel,

Provo for you. As someone who has struggled with a weight issue over the last 25 years I want you to realize that you have taken on a true challange. It is not about dieting! It is not about exercise! It is not about eating out! What it is about is your attitude towards all of the above.

I have yo-yo'ed like so many others. Trying diet after diet, exercising compulsively and the end result - I lose the weight only to "FIND" it and then some. Imagine I have lost over 100 lbs. in 13 months and just 16 months later "FOUND" 115 of them around my waistline again!

I would love to not only follow your results but would like to know what you are doing to achieve those results you seek. I want to know what motivates you, cause I believe if it motivates you then there are many others who will be motivated as well. I want to hear ALL the news, both good and bad. What is working but what is not as well.

I look forward to being your "weightloss" buddy so we can be where we want with our health together.

To reiterate the perfect quote; "JUST DO IT"

Marvin D.

Hi Joel ...

I think that's a ballsy move and one that will be sure to inspire others ... (I'm inspired as one who could shed an ounce or two!)

Go for it man! I'd like to see it happen as a journey ...

Joel,

Would love to follow your progress on this.

Here are some suggestions from this longtime yo-yo dieter (lose 10, gain 20, lose 20, gain 30) who finally got a lifestyle that works:

1. While exercise is great, relying on significant exercise as a lifestyle for weight loss is one of the surest ways to fail, since it's one of the easiest things to let slide.

*What you eat* is paramount. Don't train with the gung-ho fitness gurus until after you've adjusted your eating correctly. You have to set up your lifestyle to lose weight *even if you don't exercise*.

2. The core problem has been identified by modern factual studies of open-minded science-minded guys (think Gary Taube, Dr. Joseph Mercola, Dr. Atkins, etc.): It's the sugar/insulin battle in the bloodstream.

By the way, a low-carb diet will solve that, BUT...almost no one can consistently stay on a very low (Atkins type) diet. Don't bother trying. It creates cravings that almost guarantee failure.

3. The core problem is solved by some variation of the following:

a. eliminating grains, even whole grains...bread, corn meal, pasta (except Dreamfields), etc.

b. eliminating sugar, including but not limited to table sugar, corn syrup, fructose, so-called "natural" or "raw" sugar, honey, etc.

c. eliminating high-starch foods like white potatoes (sweet potatoes are OK), or too many legumes (starchy beans).

This will result in a lower-than-normal carbohydrate intake, but that's not the point. You not only don't have to count carbs, but you can enjoy carbs from the right food groups (vegetables, some fruit).

4. What can one eat, then? (Bread is my life!, you may say).

You can eat delicious things that most diets say you can't: beef, pork, chicken, almost all vegetables, Dreamfields pasta, some fruit (Mercola recommends maximum of 15-17 grams of fructose in fruit per day -- that's two or three pieces of fresh fruit -- apple, banana, etc. -- delicious).

5. You DO NOT have to count calories, carbs, grams, points, or anything else! To do so is another step to failure, because we naturally gravitate away from the chore of it, plus it tends to cause us to "starve" ourselves, plus it tempts us to cheat through self-deception.

6. These are five reasons for failure to lose or keep it off as a lifestyle:

a. "Counting" something (carbs, calories, points, etc.)
b. Eating grains, sugars and starches (sets up a sugar/insulin thing that causes cravings which will be given in to
c. Starving oneself (ends up being too much to live with)
d. Going low-fat (this is BAD science, -- read Taube's "Good Calories Bad Calories", Mercola's "No Grain Diet").
e. Relying on exercise (exercise will work -- walk briskly five miles a day and you will lose weight -- but only one person in 5000 will stay with it -- why sabatoge yourself)

7. Using the no-grain, no-sugar, no-starch method, you don't have to stuff yourself all the time and still be hungry with "false" cravings for more grains/sugar/starch. You can enjoy great food, satisfy the carb cravings with vegetables and some fruit, and lose weight the way you gained it (a little at a time -- think a year ahead instead of 20-30 pounds this month).

BONUS: Experts like Taube and Mercola (and MANY other MODERN students of weight loss and health) will tell you it's FAR more healthy -- preventing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other ailments caused by the sugar/insulin syndrome.

Joel,

I would be interested in watching you make a lifestyle change. It really isn't about losing 40 lbs. that you will gain back if you do not change your mindset. I encourage you to change the way you look at food, nutrition, exercise and stress and healing. Encourage you to read the "Maker's Diet" by Jordan Rubin.

Would love to see someone model a "life" makeover and be a model for so many that need to see someone living well and healthy in a culture that promotes bad diet, poor food quality, disease and reliance on a reactive pharmaceutical medical model.

Good luck!

Joel,

Taking care of yourself is priority number one!

I can't imagine a better way to hold yourself accountable than to announce something like this to your list of subscribers / circle of influence.

I know that when I went from working (being active) to being sedentary (working from home) I started to put some weight on now as well.

I nipped that in the bud really fast and now in better shape then when I was in college (over 10 years ago).

If you need any help / advice along the way, feel free to call on me.

Brian

Hi Joel, Stephen here,

First of all, 180 pounds to 215 pounds, which ever the weight, is shocking, especially for a man with no regular exercise, and fluctuating your weight will not help in the long run,you now have the first step, which is you know you need to lose weight.

Second, the computer should never be used as an excuse, if fact, people who use computers should have better fitness routines than people stuck in hourly jobs, you create your own hours, create your own health plan, no more beaten round the bush no matter how busy your are, green pieces of paper won't help you when the ticker says's "I've had enough of this crap"

Third of all,

You say you want to be healthy for your family and business, that alone should be enough for a new goal. Remember Joel the drive and passion you have and had when starting out in IM etc. you know it's there, using that same mind power, telling yourself "not a chance buddy" drive yourself to set a goal with a change in lifestyle the way you did with IM, you were successful with that, no reason why you can't, in time, change your diet, small step of fitness here and there, find that addiction us fitness freaks seek and love and incorporate it in to your life, you would be surprised how much it may benefit your business, never minding what it can do for family life.

Joel, I'm new to IM, yes I love your emails, and they help alot, but while I'm training in IM, I'm boxing, running, swimming, working as a chef, writing poetry and plays# my passion# and making time for the girlfriend, letting life keep me healthy and not a slave to work, healthy mind and body equals a healthy smile, a little lame that sounds but I feel it.

I say go for what ever you are thinking, but do not rush it, it's frame of mind you want to get in to, not frame of zimmer frame. Excuse my long mail, I hope you read it, give your mind a break and think long and hard about whats most important, which I'm sure you will. Takecare, good luck, Stephen.

Great idea Joel.
I had to put my chocolate chip cookies down after reading the posts here. Presently weighing in at 20+ lbs over my healthy and wise limit, I think I should join this caravan. Everybody (big body?) that joins should become part of my new Hog Blog... Sorry getting carried away. Computers food and weight seem to go together. My kids would like to see less of me if you know what I mean. Count me in.
Steve

I don't typically respond to your stuff, but this one deserves a reply. You're talking about your health, and adding years to your life, so do it, but do it for yourself, not as a gimmick.
Good luck. Get slim, stay slim!

Wally

Hi Joel,
I could stand to lose a few pounds myself so I would read along with you as you trim down. It would be good inspiration for me.

Jim

COunt me in.... I need to lose 70 pounds. When do we start?

I too have been battling the pounds since 1995 after injuring my back. In March of this year I reached an all time high on the scale. I was constantly our of breath, tired and miserable. I finally decided to get my life back. I have since lost 32 lbs. Totally changed my lifestyle, diet habits and attitude. I still have many more lbs to go before I can be considered a normal weight, but I have begun to enjoy the journey. I think your blogging about weight loss and healthy lifestyle may help and encourage other people. I would follow. It couldn't hurt business either.

Hi Joel,

I live in Fort Collins, CO, and have been seeing some of your stuff over the last year or so. I own some of your AdSense Training also. It is great to hear that you will be taking care of yourself too! That is a BIG step!

I do wish you luck and perseverance with your current efforts. Over the last year or so, I have been trying, most of the time, to lose weight myself. I'm 45 and keep getting injuries as I think I am over-anxious to make progress. I had a sore knee twice, and now have a problem seemingly with the connective tissue in my feet causing me to have sore heels. Is it the shoes? Too much all at once???? Too much time at the computer? I hope you will be able to get into the exercise pert of things gradually so that your progress is not hampered by stops and starts.

I have done the Atkins diet with low carbs, iceberg lettuce and celery to fill me up, black olives (5), carrot sticks (3 small), half a tomato per day with bits of ham or bacon or egg on top to make the salad tasty. I kept the fat to modest levels using canola oil for its omega-3s. Mostly I ate normal dinners missing out the rice or potatoes and focusing on meat. I ate less as missing the carbs seemed to decrease my appetite. I ate lots of asparagus and mushrooms as my low carb veggies. It worked for about 6 weeks until I got tired of it. But, it was a great start to losing weight. That was 10 years ago.

Since then I have tried Bill Phillips' Body-for-Life program. You work out with weights, either upper body or lower body, every other day, on the days in-between you do cardio (with interval training, if possible) three days per week, and you get one day off per week. This program requires that you eat carbs and proteins in small portions 6 times per day, every 2 or 3 hours. It is great that you don't feel hungry and you know when your next snack or meal is coming. You can choose starchy veggies as your carb if you like and you can add extra veggies too. Suposedely, eating often keeps the metabolism up so that you burn more calories constantly. The workouts tone different parts of the body and allow recovery time for muscle growth. Since muscles burn more calories than fat, so you win there too. You have more muscles and burn more calories while maintaining them when you are idle between workouts and sitting at your computer. (Your muscles use more energy while you are not working out than fat cells use.)

This seems like a GREAT system to me and I followed it faithfully for six weeks about nine years ago. Other health plans don't seem to make sense to me. The problem is to find the discipline when you are trying to work hard during the day as well! I would love to get back into this, and have been trying by starting out with treadmill time and before then by walking around my long block. But injuries happen as I got too over confident in my aging body, I think. It is not as easy to avoid injuries as when I was younger.

One great tip for having snacks on the Body-for-Life program is to either use shakes and protein bars or parts of them as snacks, or, my favorite is to use one low-fat yogurt, as the carb, and a similar amount of cottage cheese, as the protein, and mix them together and divide into three containers. You can carry these around with you in an ice box or lunch bag and have your three snacks available all day! They are like a treat and help keep you eating the right things!

We should all get active as preventing all those nasty diseases is far more enjoyable than experiencing them, me thinks!

Good luck and good efforts to you!!!!! If you want to chat or brainstorm ideas I'd love to be in touch.

Loretta Chen

That's a great idea. But, do it for you not for us.

There are more exercise philosophies out there than there are religions, many of them either ineffective or dangerous. I know you'll find the right one for you.

One that's impressed me and that worked for me (I'm back on it again) is the PACE program by Dr. Al Sears. It's interval training. I have also had great success with an infomercial product that really works as advertised, The Total Gym. But I couldn't get Christie Brinkly to come over and help me get started. Other than that, it worked just fine.

Good luck with it. I know you'll be an inspiration.

All the best,

Tom Justin

Do you still need confirmation? ;-)

Go ahead, Joel! I'd love to follow you in reading and loosing weight, so I look forward to what you'll have to share. Make an iPhone-app to support the quest! ;-)

If you can show people how to keep it off for over a year... do it. Otherwise, well, Oprah already did it.

Joel,

If ya want some more motivation to stay on your plan use www.Stickk.com

That site allows you to "goal bet" with yourself. I used it to lose over 20 pounds in a few months eating right and exercising.

All the best.

David

P.S. I've gained and lost weight many times so I know what you're about to go through. On Saturday I ran 14 miles so I'm doing it too.

Hello Joel! I think this is a fabulous idea! I decided on making a change myself a couple of weeks ago.

I have about 30 pounds to lose, but my goodness has it been hard to focus!! So, I've decided to focus on 20 pounds instead and start with that.

I found a good video by Organic Authority on the importance of taking plant-based enzymes to help with digestion and had written a blog post on it http://texasgreensource.com/2010/09/05/how-to-lose-weight-with-plant-based-enzymes/

Wishing you the best!!

I agree with Ron Matthews that Mercola & Hyman are better than the no protein, low-fat camp -- especially if you are concerned with your long term health and not artificially dropping pounds.

Not trying to plug my credentials, but I would be willing to answer any questions you have on your journey! I'm also losing some weight after having a baby. So in a way, we'll be doing it together, even if you don't want my advice! :)

Congratulations!!

way to go joel!
i'm also fat and it's very inspiring to see that i'm not the only one who
struggles like me...

Hi Joel. This too is my story. What's funny is that I said I was going do the exact same thing. I wish I only had 40 pounds to loose, but I have 100 pounds to loose. I decided on Sunday that I was going to do the same thing you are planning on doing. I put up a blog http://www.becomingmetv.com. I realized that I am so out of shape and my knees hurt so bad. I've always been chunky, but now I am FAT!!!!. I didn't really realize just how out of shape I was until last year when I had to give a talk and just to stand for 30 minutes and talk I was out of breath. I could hear myself gasping for air wondering if my audience could hear me. But the topping on the cake came about a week ago when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and I went to the Dr. with her. The Dr. told me that obesity can now be linked to breast cancer. I realized that the signs were around me everywhere. I have been blessed that I don't suffer from any of the diseases that are linked to obesity, but I know that if I don't get a handle on this thing now I might not continue to have those blessings. And I really need to be there for my mom as she goes through her treatment so being healthy for me right now is so important on so many levels.

So I think you should do this and I would really love it if you and I could take this journey together. I need someone to help keep me accountable and motivated. I've always admired you ever since you did the next Internet Millionaire and I met you at the Internet Summit in 2008.

So I look forward to following you and also Becoming Me!

Audrey

HI Joel

Why not create a blog around your weight loss programme?

Monetize the blog in the normal way with all profits going to your charity, and then everyone will be a winner.

Good luck, and send us a link to the new blog.

Andrew

Hi,

Go for it! Good luck!

I'll do it with you. All of us can benefit from taking on this difficult weight loss challenge together. You should create a site where we can all check in on a regular basis. JGB

Go for it. Nothing like public pressure to keep you on track. I've done the weight loss (190 down to 165) and been keeping it off. Start with simple, easy things.

Eat just a bit less so that you are hungry before each meal.

Do push-ups while the water gets hot for your shower.

Brush your teeth after dinner so you don't snack.

Stop buying junk food - out of sight out of mind.

Look to lose a pound a week on average. If you beat this, great. But this lets you splurge one day a week and gain a pound when you lost two already.

Great idea Joel - I believe it would be very motivational for many people.

Your timing is Amazing for me - I too have a significant amount of weight to lose and started my new program yesterday. I also need accountability and motivation. I look forward to your program and the information you provide to help everyone working on improving their health.

Thanks for having the courage to Put Yourself Out There!!

Steve

Hello Joel,

I am sure you are getting a ton of advice from all experts out there..!!
One tip (something I researched and tried):Reduce your daily sugar intake to about 15 grams.I know..not easy.I love fruits and almost include in all my meals. Now I am cutting down.one tip would be to reduce your intake of fruits, fruit juices, dried fruits...etc.

Best of luck

Karam Abdalla

Well I think you should go for it. In fact I would love to do it with you.
Peggy

What I'd like to know about are motivations that work for you and why they work for you.

Here's what I tell patients.

1. First and foremost, DON'T change your entire diet abruptly. That's a recipe for failure.

Remember:
2. Taking it off and keeping it off absolutely requires lifestyle change.
3. It isn't a short term project.
4. Do one change at a time.
5. Don't start by removing things from your diet. Start by adding one thing. Perhaps a vegetable or rice or corn. Systems are changed just as much by addition as by subtraction of an element
5A. Eventually, you will want to target some dietary items for replacement. For instance: fast food.

Look at weight loss as having several components.
6. Discovering and learning about food. You're in for a culinary adventure not torture by deprivation. You get to try new recipes for "normal" foods, pre- WWII ethnic food recipes (the way our grandparents or parents ate before market forces made beef relatively cheap), making different things the main course.

7. Don't weigh yourself often. The scale numbers are a red herring. The numbers that matter are lab results, clothing sizes, and people who ask if you're going to the gym or something.

8. Find a physical activity you would do for the sake of enjoyment and do it regularly.

9. Change snack foods. Instead of wheat thins use celery for dips - the taste of the dip lasts longer for one thing.

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: If you fall off the wagon, so what? Get back on the wagon. Life is for living, not obsessing about calorie counts or your quantitative differential between perfection and reality.

Hey Joel! Good on you!

40 lbs? No problem. You can accomplish that in 8 weeks (maybe less) easy.

I myself once lost 70 lbs without ever giving up food I love. THAT is the key to it all... most people go on some rigid regimen and there's no way to maintain it for any length of time.

You said not to offer any advice, so I won't. But if you would like to know how I did it myself, and also helped my mother (who lost 86 lbs when she was diagnosed diabetic) to do the same, let me know. You know how to reach me.

Good luck!!

Lisa

Joel I just finished my weight loss journey by losing -88 lbs and I'm keeping it off and now I'm paying it forward by helping others do the same. I'm a free certified Take Shape For Life Health Coach. I blogged You Tubed, tweeted and facebooked my journey too. It has helped my build my coaching business.

I would love to work with you. Best part is I lost all my weight without ANY exercise. The program is easy to follow and you lose 2-5 lbs per week men even faster. It's doctor tested and has been around for 30 years because it works.

Let me know if you need any help!

Here's some encouragement for you Joel. Phatty, phatty, phatty. You know phat in a good way. :-)

The best way to loose weight is to eliminate salt and sugar, and eat seven small healthy meals a day. We get enough salt and sugar from the processed foods we eat anyway. This is similar to a diabetic diet or it has been referred to as the way the pioneers ate. The meals after breakfast, lunch and supper are more like small healthy snacks. Breakfast, lunch and supper are not large. In the early 1980s I lost 50 pounds this way. In 1994 I again lost 40 pounds with this diet. Both times I didn't have to exercise at all. Besides losing weight I felt a lot healthier with lots of energy. I have just started back on it and plan to stay on it the rest of my life. It's hard to go out for dinner on this diet though. When I go out sometimes I take my meals with me.

I'd follow your progress Joel
Mike

I found it very interesting when a Danish comedian (and internet marketing guy) ran Comedy Kuren, and lost weight down from 192 kilos to 92 kilograms. That program was worth watching because he also had issues where he had run fraudulent programs - and gave him a national prize as one of the most innovative programs on Danish television.

In a similar way, just as Next Internet Millionaire is interesting, so is the issue of integrating health as an important part of success in online marketing.

I am just as guilty as yourself. If not even more. I ran across the 140 kilo barrier without any problems, and know my muscle weight is at around 107-110 kilos, so I need to go through the exact same process. If I were located in the US I would almost do a challenge about who could loose the most in the same amount of time, but that's just my personal competitiveness coming into the picture.

I wish you the best of luck, and of course your quest for weight loss is worth watching. You and I have occasionally disagreed in many aspects (politics etc), but I do respect your validity as an inspiring blogger, so getting involved in your weight loss process would be interesting.

Knowing your usual perfectionism you no doubt already have the domain ready for kick-starting the idea. ;-)

We overestimate how much we eat, and we underestimate how much burn. The result we get fatter.

What is the best weight loss method ? The one that works for you, that you can stick to. The one that fits around your life, not that you fit your life around the diet.

Diets fail because they restrict and deprive.

The moment I stopped thinking of foods as good or bad, or that I had somehow slipped form a diet because I had a pizza, I started to lose the weight.

Mindset is important, you have to stop thinking of foods as good or bad. As John Barban says, the poison is in the dose.

I just focused on eating less. I learnt how many calories I actually needed ( it's much less than we all think ) and worked on the basics of calories in v calories out. Now there are plenty of people happy to tell me it's not that simple, but the fact is after 65lbs of weight gone. I don't listen to the " advice" anymore. You are a successful guy, so I am sure you learnt long ago, to not listen too much to the well meaning friends who tell you something can't be done.

I am not going to tell you one diet over another, I will only say focus on eating less.

In my case I used intermittent fasting once or twice per week, I still do, and it is easiest thing I have ever done, I also think it is the perfect internet marketers diet but that is me, all you have to do is figure out a way to eat less for YOU.

Good luck with your own weight loss journey, and if you want to know more about becoming a retired dieter, well you know where I am ;)

That would be a good idea with your blood pressure.
You do realize that as you age your metabolizem changes. It slows down to a dull roar, thus you gain weight.
I have similar problems.

Joel,

I am about 255, 6'3". I could definitely lose some weight and get in better shape. I vote yes. You should share your experience with us. I believe it would inspire a lot of people. Please, if you could, find a method that takes less than an hour per day... ;-)

God Bless,
Daniel Chenoweth
http://BlogTown.com

That sounds like a great idea. I could sure use a bit of inspiration about now. I also lost 50lbs 3 years ago and it is creeping back up.

No more sugar, no more sugar, no more sugar ..... that is going to be my mantra.

Oh ... and no white flour and very little dairy. Go for it Joel. I hope you succeed. Lots of us will be watching with interest.

HI Joel,

I was inspired to do this myself around the end of May. I have now lost 40 pounds and I feel awesome.

I actually started a blog to track my progress at http://www.burnthefatproof.com and I have been updating pretty regularly.

You can't imagine the feeling that you will have when you knock this off.

I wish you luck and make sure to post regularly and enlist the help of the people on your blog not to let you off the hook.

Here's to Your LifetoSuccess,

John Clark

I'm going to watch you do it, Joel! Putting yourself out there is so gutsy - it really adds the pressure - right when you want a spoonful of Ben & Jerry's, you'll have your followers to answer to - that's gotta be even more effective than the public weigh-in part of Weight Watchers.

Two years ago I saw a video of you playing games on a computer in the games room of your offices.
You were sitting on a couch as you were playing, and I said to myself that guy is getting to be a fat slob. I left a comment. Sometimes in between you were on a video while vacationing with your wife and kids in Australia, Sidney. You complained on the size of the hamburger it was too small in comparison to what they serve in the States, I thought Joel that hamburger size was made especially for you. That seat you were sitting on? you were propping yourself on the table. I left a comment. Then last I saw you on a video at a conference, I laughed cos you are entertaining inspirational and a likable nutter. I also saw you were fatter, I mean fatter slob, than the year before, I thought no! not my successful mentor, so I yelled out in my head "Joel go for a run" but you did not listen, you stayed indoors with your dog Socrates and played computer games all day again.

I suggest an alternative route to your "Thin Your Fat In Ethiopia" or better still a person of your recognition I suggest your staff call Oprah TV Show to have you on her show, And you will announce a new discovery on loosing weight. You will do away all diets and fitness program the world has ever created. You will herald in the NEW LOVE YOUR FAT TO DEATH THINNING PROGRAM. And this is how it must happen on the show. Oprah rolls a big fat round mirror on the stage for you, you drop all your clothes off in the nut and stand in front of the mirror. I and all the audience jump about with laughter for and hour when we saw where the real fat is?
After the nuisance you look at your stomach you cuddle it, massage it, kiss it and say I love my fat stomach, thank you for telling me i eat too much, I promise I will go to the toilet every night.
Then you will turn around and Iook at your butt, you grasp with both hands with a tight grip and say I LOVE MY BUTT, it is a beautiful sexy butt, Oprah do you think my butt is sexy? Of course she wont say a word, she would be in fits of laughter. Shes never looked at anyones butt except Steff especially on her show. The point you will get across to love yourself with all that big fat fat.

Love your fatness, your bigness, your unusualness at that point of time in life. Most people are hung up about loosing weight. In my view, the simple truth is they dont love themselves, they hate their fat. In short the solution is to love your fat hug it embrace it, thank it be grateful treat yourself well and the fat will go away nicely in return for a Brad Pitt suprise.

Joel I know what ever you set your mind to you will get there, just have fun the way. I will miss your cuddly fat, please keep all your now fat clothes, I want to auction it on Trademe.

Cheers

Tim Koia

Hey Joel,

This is my first post to any of your blogs and I have been reading them for eight months now. I just knew you would get many comments to your post as I started reading it. However, one of the reasons that this is my first post is because personal health is one of my passions. I am no fitness expert or anything but I always try to do the best I can on my own and what I can learn. I would say I have never really “let myself go” but I will say that it can be harder to maintain your health lifestyle than just doing it for a couple of months. I am sure you know this but whatever you do don’t get off track again because it can get much harder to get back to where you were. Also, I want to say that by “Putting yourself out there” in this way, you will not only accomplish the positive things you mentioned in your blog but also will make the relationship you have with your readers much stronger. I feel like you have already been doing a great job of maintaining a close relationship to your readers and on those who take action on the things learned from you, however, this definitely brings it up a level. It can only do good for both you and us. Congratulations Joel on making the change.

Well Joel you have indeed painted yourself into a corner here but no doubt that was your intention, nothing like a little bit of public pressure to perform. Hats off to your step forward on that new path to better health and being proactive hence being able to send me e-mails for another 100 years.

However health is not just about your weight hence I strongly recommend you read a new book (July) by Dr. Buttar "The 9 Steps to Keep the Doctor Away"available on Amazon or his own site https://www.the9steps.com. By far the best book on health I have read in years as his evidence shows how the toxicity that surrounds us in this modern world will eventually lead to the major killers of heart disease and cancer. The same evidence also has drastic effects upon what we do for our children especially how these same toxicities have lead to the explosion of ADD and autism. He is also the first to successfully treat these same conditions in his clinic through diet and a detoxification process. He also has a long list of terminal cancer patients still alive. His approach will definitely get you off of those blood pressure drugs. The focus of this book is all about prevention so that you don't need to come to his clinic to fix it later versus showing the science behind why the choice is now or later not "if" you are going to have a serious problem.

Obviously loosing the weight is a step down the right road but how else you make lifestyle choices could easily have an even greater effect on your longevity. Have you known a Skinny person that has died of cancer too? Note he is not selling anything other than some common sense and myth busting science to wake us up before we become a statistic by making better health choices contrary to the average. I might add for all the readers, is not that mainstream thinking and behavior what has gotten you in this position in the first place? Meanwhile we all watch as friends and family members needlessly die before their time. There is a clear message there, expecting different results by doing the same thing is a sign of insanity, not?

My best wishes to a successful mission Joel and may it offer encouragement to others to follow along with you. As suggested you should make it a competition for the biggest internet looser. :-)

Eat good stuff.

Trevor Chilton

Joel,

Lead and I will follow. I have the same problem. Do not get enough exercise.

Just 10 pounds overweight.

Good luck!

Great Idea - In fact I got a domain name to do just that on ... now ... to actually get started ;-) Here's to GREAT Fitness and Health.

You're brave, or is the word gutsy? You and I are fighting the same battle. I'm on a quest to lose 30 pounds - and I'm not having any fun. Have you ever seen what 3 ounces of meat looks like?

I wish you well on your quest and I'll monitor your progress and listen to any tips you discover along the way.

~ Tom

Hey Joel--
I need to lose 20 pounds. I suffer from the same affliction -- sedentary lifestyle. If you decide to go for it, I'll be right there with you trying to lose weight as well. We can be an inspiration for each other. I've been trying to lose 20 pounds for around 20 years now. Think I have a chance?

Hi Joel, G,day champ, good for you for getting ready to do something about it. I am a University Qualified Exercise Physiologist (no not one of them pumped up zips who call themselves personal trainers), a real Personal Trainer. It is always nice to hear when a person of your connections and influence take a positive message to the world ... especially about health.

I would be delighted to offer you any assistance/advice on how to go about your regimen correctly (so we don't loose you to apathy or ??? worse) Your success in this venture will be keenly watched by Millions, I wish you all the very best and I would love to assist in any way. for free .... because it will not only help you... It may possibly help millions.

ZEN... "to know and not to do..... is not yet to know"

Go for it Joel

Paul

Joel,

Good on you for the quest. Your family deserve to keep you around, so protect your ticker.

Sure, do it for you and your family BUT REALLY:

- for the public good

- in a way that encourages people to join you, not to eat a chillidog and read about in on their iPhone. Get them losing weight too. Even a little.

- use it to encourage giving - you donate something big from your POCKET, and from your empire, and encourage we readers to give something from their thin wallets (ask what we see as the greatest need)

- THE BIGGEE - my suggestion - spend two weeks in a warehouse somewhere with 1,000 unemployed people from all demographics. Team them how to KaChing, not as a sordid reality tv campaign, but as a gift to God, to America and to the least of these. And if it works, retire from profit. Sell your business or put everything in a blind trust. You have enough grain in your barns. Make it your passion to hold these sessions right across America. In a year, train 1 million people how to make a living on line. In the end, train everyone who wants the knowledge.

Do good? Here's your chance, Joel.

Joel,

YES!! Go for it!

There's no better way to be inspired/motivated than putting it all on the line for public scrutiny and support.

You have dedicated your life to inspire us, now let's help motivate you to meet your personal goals in return.

Plus, from a selfish perspective, we kinda need you around to continue with all the valuable info you provide.

Best wishes! One step and one pound at a time, repeated daily.

I accept your challenge to lose right along side you,
Steve from Santa Barbara

Hi Joel,

You're going to be flooded with advice on hundreds of ways to lose weight, but here is the most important thing to remember... the only thing that will make you lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume. That means that you have two healthy choices, exercise more, or eat fewer calories.

If you exercise more, you create muscle mass, which weighs more than fat but burns calories faster. This means slower weight loss overall, but allows you to eat more of the foods you love. Eating fewer calories will cause faster weight loss, but means that you must maintain the lower eating levels permanently if you want to maintain the lower weight. You can eat exactly the same foods you love, but just less of them. Even just 100 fewer calories a day will lead to long term significant weight loss.

The key is to find a combination that works for you.

You can accelerate the process by substituting healthier foods for others. Substituting brown rice for white rice is one example. Eating whole fruit instead of fruit juice or dried fruit is another one.

Remember that moderation is important in all things… including moderation. If you starve yourself, your body reacts by burning fewer calories. If you occasionally let yourself consume as much as you want to, then your body will not go into starvation mode, and will continue to burn calories normally.

You’ve taken the first two steps of three that will ensure that you meet your goal. Step one is to set a realistic goal. Step two is to tell as many people as possible about your goal. The third and final step is to set a penalty for failing to meet your goal that will make you work your butt off (literally) to meet that goal. That penalty can be embarrassing, expensive, or whatever else it will take to motivate you.

In my case the goal was to lose 50 pounds in two months, and the penalty was that if I didn’t achieve that goal, then I would have to vote for Al Gore. It worked for me by simply changing my eating habits.

I would recommend setting up a site like “LoseWeightWithJoel.com” where we can all participate in your journey, and encourage you and each other to get healthier.

I’ve told you before when I’ve assisted you at seminars that you are one of my Internet Heroes, but I’m not sure I told you why. You have two things I don’t see very often in Internet Gurus I’ve met… a sense of humor, and a sense of Integrity. This blog just prove that point.

Thank you,
Bob Wright

Joel, as a guy who has done this against all odds (while having hypothyroidism and MS), I have an offer to make you. I can share with you 1 on 1 how I lost over 55 pounds and kept it off steady as she goes, chronic illness and all. My weight has evened out at less than 160 for the last 2 years even though I'm 6'0. And I eat very well, but healthy. No pills no programs.

But then I'd love for you to tell our story together after you succeed, since I'm an up and coming IMer looking to build my business, and having a story of success together would be excellent. I purchased both KaChing and Twitter Power by the way.

Hey Joel,
It's pretty gutsy to put yourself out there. I would imagine that it will make you stay on track because you have to. I was once in a similar position as you. I became very sedentary, ate a lot of fast food (one of the worst things you can do for your health) gained a lot of weight, and I began to lose my health as well. It started affecting everything, including my bp, and as with you, I was getting winded just going up a flight of stairs also.

The way that I changed my situation was first of all to get a big enough why.. which for me was looking down the road at what would happen if I didn't. Tony Robbins has talked about this method for years. I realized that I HAD to do it.. and it sounds as though you've found that within yourself as well.

The other thing I did was to get out a picture of me when I was 30 and totally buff and keep it on my desk so I look at it every day (I had an awesome 6 pack). Also, along with looking at it, I started to close my eyes and visualize myself looking like that again. I would imagine that when I looked down at my abs, or looked at my arms and shoulders that they were lean and ripped.

Interestingly, I automatically started to eat better and to exercise. It was totally effortless. It's as if the universe (God) kicked in all that was necessary for the change to happen, and it did.

Needless to say, I've lost the weight, am now doing yoga and working out, am 25 lbs lighter, and have gotten most of my health back and it's still improving, and my body is still building muscle and losing fat. I'm now 60 years old too Joel, so if I can do you most certainly can.
Cheers
Dr. John Michael Christian

Joel,

I think it's great that you're willing to "put yourself out there" for people to watch as you lose weight but I will tell you from personal experience, it ain't easy. I've tried to blog about my own weight loss struggle and it gets really boring, really fast for YOU, not for your watchers.

You asked if it would be something I would be interested in reading about and I have to tell you, no. I struggle with this issue all the time. I get tired of thinking about it. I probably wouldn't read about your weight loss journey.

I thought about doing something similar (I have 80lbs to lose), but it's scary and exposing, even among the relatively small group of followers I have over all my social media. What you propose to do is amazingly brave, and I would definitely follow. ESPECIALLY as you aren't pitching one program or method. Good luck!

Very cool idea, great community-building exercise.

Why not put together a survey to ask your folks how many of them face similar challenges and ask for suggestions : )?

Dear Joel,

You fat slob... (Ha, ha! everyone was just being so nice!)

I love your idea of getting in shape and having your virtual community support you!

Get in shape, share your progress you'll truly be 'phat'!

Marge

Congratulations, Joel! You have taken the first big step: You have admitted that you have a problem. I am right there with you, brother. I am an aspiring public speaker with a message to share, just like you ... and I am carrying 30 to 40 pounds of excess ME.

In 2001 I went to The D'Adamo Institute - you know, the place with the blood-type diet. That ultimately didn't work for me, but I learned so much about nutrition and food choices that I shall carry that with me to the day I die.

I hope you don't go with a low-fat or low-carb diet. They don't work. The only diet I've found that works is low-glycemic. You spoke about your sugar cravings. A low-glycemic diet, essential for diabetics, is the key for the rest of us as well.

Best of luck, my friend. I look forward to watching your progress and sharing your success.

In health and prosperity,
Carl

Hi Joel,

Yes,
Loosing weight is a personal issue; I have been fortunate to work in a warehouse and I keep moving all day long. Anyway, I know that sitting in front of the computer one also needs to break up the routine by doing something physical to burn off the needed extras which should be Fun. You have done it before and can easily hop back on track. First, be greatful that you realise the need and remember that you are showing leadership examples to your family and it doesn't matter what the weather is, just go do IT!

I know you will succeed!

Walter

Yeah you should do it. If not for yourself your family.

Wow!

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful feedback and encouragement.. and a few laughs.

I appreciate you chiming in. And it is great to know that others will be inspired to take the steps they have wanted to take.

Stay tuned... the best is yet to come!

Humbly,

Joel

Sounds like a fantastic goal and inspiring for many people when you achieve your results! I would love to help you get the results you want :) I am passionate about health and fitness and have been in the health/fitness industry for 16 years and I would love to write a programme for you. I just won NSW Fitness Professional of the Year( waiting for national result) and I am attending your event in Sydney this weekend so let's start this week!
I would love to offer you any personal training sessions and programme advice while you are here and then we can continue with your programme online as you travel the world as my fitness/lifestyle training website is being launched next month.

I just helped a client of mine lose 18kg in 8 weeks as part of a radio challenge here in Sydney so now I'm up for a new challenge! Let's start your regime NOW :) I look forward to hearing back and to meeting you this weekend. You can check my credentials and company details on my website too :)

Dear Joel,

Your story is my story...almost to the weight and events. I am a busy physician who is also entering into Internet Marketing, which is why I am on your list...and also spending too much time on the computer. By coincidence on this very day I vowed to myself to turn my life around and lose those pounds that seemed to creep up from nowhere. I don't want to live this way.

My weight also is 225 pounds--way to much. Let us therefore enter our programs together. Comparing notes from time to time could create a bit of competitiveness that will encourage each of us to do the hard things that must be done and then keep at it. Other list members may choose to join my challenge.

My favorite method is the Nordic Ski Track and dieting...with the addition of the Chuck Norris Total Gym device that is also kept here in my home gym. It is just too easy for busy people to drift away from programs that we know will help us. These methods have kept me trim and served me well in the past and I am determined that they shall do so again.

Remember that it takes only 21 days to turn a workout regimen into a habit and not a chore. Just keep at it.

It is hard for a man in public life to admit to problems such as this, but with the ongoing encouragement of a loyal public support base you do indeed have an excellent opportunity for success. And by ongoing I mean exactly that....ongoing support. Not just once today.

Regards from one who is also there to share with you and offer support.

DLP M.D.

Ha ha yes like the saying goes 'Just do it!" Joel.

I saw you in Sydney last year you looked fine to me but then again I'm a 'fatty boom bah' too, who knows you might even inspire people like myself me to move more than our fingers on a daily basis. Can you you make it fun to watch though ... think Olivia Newton John fun and style your wardrobe back to the 80's before you 'get physical' Joel. Take care.

Cheers,

Janet.

Joel,
Of course I would be interested in following your progress, not because I am a nutritionist, but because I am human! And as a human I love to share in other's triumph and struggle. If you are going to do this in front of the whole world. Take a before picture, front sides and don' forget the back-yes even your butt can look good once again!

Record the date and keep them on your computer. Next take measurements of your arms, chest, waist, hips and thighs and date that as well. Weigh and record your weight and then (this is the most important step) put the scale away! Yup you got it..put it away, I mean for two moths at least! We are obsessed with weighing ourselves and think that is the ultimate goal-nope it is not!
Use your clothes as your guide. Which brings me to your next task, go through all of your clothes and put them into sections 1. "what I was a year ago" 2. 6 months ago 3. three months ago. Starting with pile number 1, put into a suitcase or a box, followed by number 2 pile and then 3. When it is time, pull out the first set of clothes and those will fit first (get it?).

In about 2 months time, or when you think you are not getting anywhere, is the time for your second picture, measurement and weigh in...this will be your inspirational tool to keep going! Believe me you will see a difference!

Of course I can give you tips on food and stuff, and I will if you are interested, but I am interested to see how you do on your own journey!

Keep it real and remember you are doing this not only for you, but for your family too!

Good luck!

Hey Joel

Great going mate and the pleasure and honor would be mine if you choice to share publicly your weight loss journey, l would look forward to video, webinars or what ever you choice do if you go public on it, that is my support to you is to read and watch your updates while on this journey giving feedback and comments any way l can to help with this awesome journey, to the greatest success for you and your family.

Hey Joel,

Personally, I wouldn't go public with it. Typically keeping your goals to yourself gives you a better chance of achieving them. I've written about this on my blog and it's backed by science.

http://dontstepinthepoop.com/keep-your-goals-to-yourself

They say that telling people about your goals gives your brain the same satisfaction as achieving it. That's been my experience.

And as someone who has gone through the process of getting more physically fit, I think it's more important that you achieve it for yourself. I quit smoking and then people just started noticing that I had stopped. All the times I told people I quit ended in failure.

But why not compromise...you can chronicle it privately and then show how you did it afterwards.

Hey Joel,

I'd love to read about your progress. In fact, i think I'll join you with a blog of my own. You know weight has been a struggle for my entire life. Now's the time! Thanks for the encouragement! Looking forward to celebrating with you!

Trey Darbonne

Hey Joel,
Thanks so much for sharing. Deciding to do something like 'lose weight' is the first step to success and putting it out there publicly has a huge accountability factor. Congratulations on being able to be truthful to yourself about the state of your health. I agree though, that you have to do this for yourself.
You have taken off the weight before so you know that you are quite capable of doing it. The question is 'How are you going to maintain your new fit and healthy body once you reach your goal, this time?' You do want to maintain it, don't you?
If you don't mind I will just share a little secret with you, as I believe that you already know what exercise you should be doing and what food you should be eating to become fitter, leaner, healthier and stronger. The reason that most people #95% of the population# don't achieve or maintain their ideal body, size, shape & health is because they never really look at the underlying issues. Why are YOU holding onto your excess weight? They just push the pause button for a while while they go on a "DIET" and then once they are finished their "DIET" they press play again and go back to all their unhealthy habits. Before they know it they are back up to their starting weight + some. Sound familiar?? Maybe you know a person or 2 that this has happened to.
So Joel, the first thing that you need to understand is that you DO NOT want to lose anything. Your subconscious mind believes that losing something is really bad and it will go out of it's way to help you find it again, because if you lose anything else in life #a loved one, your keys or wallet# you want to get it back. So when you 'lose weight' most people find a way to get it back.
So in order to make this journey successful start by changing your vocabulary and focus on your increased health and not a particular number. So instead of saying "I need to lose about 40 pounds", change it to "I am focussing on getting fit and healthy and any pounds that drop off me whilst on my journey is a bonus".
By sharing your journey you are not only being a role model for your family and friends you are being a role model for a whole community.
I too love to inspire, educate and entertain, but my audience are people who want to create their ideal body.
If you need anything along the way I would love to help out any way I can.
I look forward to following your successes and failures along the way to reaching your goal.

Dee :)

Ok Mr. J

I would like my feedback to be read by all your readers, YES!! as i noticed your body when you started a few years ago kinda looked slim and fit....but now you look a little over weight just putting it repectively and perhaps un-fit too....And not to mention i am in the same boat with a big belly and perhaps un-fit too...."something in common" hahaha N yep i use to have a gud bod too before i started internet....

Ok!! here is my suggestion:-

How about you do something like the internet millionaire however with losing weight...CALL IT BEACCOUNTABLELOOSINGWEIGHT and pick one geuss who is also fat to WIN and have the opportunity to train and loose weight with you and do it live.....or perhaps pick a few of your customers etc.... i think this will show how much you are serious and how much you care about us being your subscribers.....

This will be only for internet viewers......

Kind regards
Lionnel :-))

Hah, you struck a chord here fatty. A lot of us are in the same boat. I hit 280+ recently, now I'm down under 260 and on the way to my goal of 230. (I'm 6'4" - all relative that's low for me)

Keep up the energy, nothing like being asked to be held accountable for something.

Go for it - I think its great - so many people are in your position and why not - now that you have put it out there you are accountable and so many people will be watching.

5 years ago I was the number 1 street dancer in Australia 5'4 and 52kg - I am now 69 kg (stopped dancing and well... had to go to work...) but I am starting Gym and personal training tomorrow so I’ll watch your progress and use it as a reminder to get my once 'hot ass' back in the gym and to stop eating the amazing cinnamon twists next to my work...

I will follow you Joel! Actually I started "Body for Life" a week ago, so I may have a jump on you... or maybe not. I am 5'10" and weigh 224. I am hoping to drop at least 25 lbs in the next 90 days and then do a re-evaluation. Good for you for making the decision. Even after a week, I already feel more alive and I am sure you will too.

You go Joel!!

Joel
I am on the same venture you are beginning. I myself needed to put it out there and tell the world what I was doing to hold myself accountable. I have 100 lb to lose. My friend, Dr. Laura Bertram introduced me to Juice Plus+ to help fill in the gaps of getting in the appropriate amount of fruits and vegetables our bodies need. Since I started it in May, I have developed a huge passion for learning more about living healthy and eating better. Since starting the product. It has regulated my digestion, given me more energy, curbed my appetite and cravings. I now eat more fruits and vegetables and can walk past the junk in the supermarket without a problem. To date I have taken off just under 20 pounds and am plugging away to reach my 100 pound goal. Please keep in touch to support one another and visit my website to hear more about Juice Plus+. You may have already heard of it. There is a short 10 minute video on my site that explains what Juice Plus+ is all about. I am so excited to continue my journey to better health. Contact me so I can tell you how your chilren can receive Juice Plus+ free, and you can receive some free products as well. Look forward to connecting and holding accountability!

Hi Joel,

Hi Joel,

I am not going to give you any advice on how to lose weight. I don't have any issue on it. I am 5:3 1/2 and 110 lbs and in the middle of a highly successful road tour promoting my book, Health Comes First.

All I can say is this: Whatever you do, you must do it with your heart. With a passion. Don't fake it. Do it for a cause, for a mission, not just for personal or family reason. And success would come easy.

All the best.

Go for it Joe. I wish I was in the same shoes that you are today. You are financially sound and can take out time to do whatever you want to. Health comes first. Do not ignore it. And do it the fun way, aerobics, zumba are few workouts that I enjoy doing.

Good Luck!

My Husband was about 100 lbs overweight. He ended up getting very very sick one night and going to the hospital. Long story short he seems to have developed an allergy to all fats, oils and alcohol. He dropped 95 lbs in about 8 months. I don't recommend that rapid loss but in general just stock your house with foods that are low or fat free with lots of fiber and join a sport of find a way of working out that is truly fun. He played street hockey a few times a week with the neighborhood kids. Good Luck! Its a life change you need not a diet.....

Hi Joel,

I have a similar situation as you do. I can totally relate. I used to weigh 185 to 190 pounds and then I got into Internet Marketing about 20 months ago. I used to go to the gym about three times a week and workout for a couple hours at a time.

Now, I am really driven to be successful with my Internet ventures and as a result, have become very sedentary, sitting in front of the computer all day long. I don't want to use two hours at the gym when I can be working on my sites. If I am not on the computer in the evening, I watch TV to relax.

I now weigh more then I have ever weighed at 225 pounds! I keep telling myself that I will lose the weight and I know that I can. I need to give my websites a break a couple hours a day to get exercise and also change my diet if I am going to successfully lose weight.

What I eat is pretty health but I eat too much and also have grown fond of ice cream every night after dinner...

I too need to lose 35 to 40 pounds and would be interested in following a program that would get me there. I just need to get motivated!!!!

It is so easy to be sedentary and sit in front of the computer and then eat whatever you want to eat. It will be hard to break that habit but I am not happy with myself physically.

So...go for it, and I may just follow along and lost the weight too!!

All the best,
Chris

Joel,
Hit the library and check out Engine 2 Diet by Rip Esselstyn. I dropped 30 pounds in six months and my doctor says my blood work numbers are "wonderful." I dodged the Diabetes bullet. Here's the thing, though. No meat, no dairy, it's basically vegan, so not for everybody. (See Daniel 1:8-15 for inspiration.) Good luck!

Hi Joel

I've lost 50 Lbs in the past 12 months.

I've lost weight before on "diets" but put it all back on again, this time it's different. The key to my success is to realise there's no hurry. Success comes from putting a healthy eating and exercise plan into action and sticking with it.

If you rush to lose weight, cabbage soup diets etc, then the weight loss becomes the goal rather than your lifestyle. Make a healthy lifestyle the goal and enjoy watching the weight fall off.

Avoid anything faddy, watch the carbs, watch the alcohol and do more active stuff.

BTW - I just discovered kettle bells, what a great workout!

Jon

This would be a great idea! So many of us are becoming overweight and not really caring. That's scary because there are so many issues that can arise from not being healthy. As you become heavily overweight, you're body is prone to more damage and the slightest bump or smallest fall could cause serious bodily injury.

I would so watch and help cheer you on. As an athlete back in high school, the changes of college helped me to put on some unwanted pounds, but I can say that I was inspired by others before me to get back in shape. I often look at different sites online to check out exercise moves to try in the comfort of my own home and occasionally a few friends and my sister will get together and try out these moves, go for a walk, a run, or bike ride together just to push each other. We all want to reach our goals but sometimes it is easier when you have someone there pushing you.

None of us are athletic trainers, but we have all met some type of trainer or met a really healthy person who has helped inspire us (many who were once not as physically fit as they are today). So with that said, I would definitely check it out. Go JOEL!!

Go for it Joel... it's impressive that you're willing to put yourself out there. Weight loss is probably a #1 in things that people can relate too. It'll drive huge traffic for you too. :)

Way to GO Joel!
I agree with Jon (if it is THAT Jon then I'm following his advice)
Also, Mercola's body typing helps to give some rational personal support to what I'm doing. Perhaps you can use that as well. I've taken to shaving looking sideways in the mirror to keep myself from being too complacent. The scale can be an encouragement.

And lastly developing the habit of non judgmental self observation is helping me dissolve unproductive habits.

Good luck to you, and to us.

Check out D'Adamo's Genotype Diet, which is for your total health, and not a crash, calorie, drink-this-potion kind of thing! It's based on YOUR metabolism, rather than that of a weight-loss diet promoter...

Good for you! At least you recognize that you need to do this. Here's a thought, why not try what some would call the most "extreme" diet around, not because it actually is, but because it automatically cuts out all the junk that you put in your body....try a raw foods diet. Or at least a vegan diet. And go in with the mindset that this will be your new lifestyle (whatever program you choose), not a diet. Because if you think of it as a diet (and once you reach your desired weight/result), you will ultimately go back to how you were...and continue that vicious cycle. If you look at it as a new lifestyle and implement new healthy eating habits, you will no doubt have greater chance at LASTING success....wishing you luck! Check out this guy who appeared on CBS "The Doctors" and lost 215lbs on a raw diet....lovingraw.com.

Way to go Joel! I say do it! Let'er rip! I would be inspired to watch as I would do well to loose 20 lbs or so, myself.

I love concepts like this... there was a guy on youtube that said he would sell a million records by the end of this year; now he's got a following and hi might just do it.

Keep us updated!

I'll be watching! Regular exercise and a healthy diet are of course the keys. But having the discipline to stay on track is the "x" factor. Getting others involved is an excellent way to keep the incentive alive. I do a lot of long distance, endurance cycling and do daily training for the events. For me, working out makes me feel alive and the social aspects of riding with others doing the same thing keeps me on track. Good luck!

Oh, man... I think it's good to publicly do these things (because it creates automatic accountability)... but there's a pretty steep learning curve when it comes to health and nutrition.

I say that only because there are so many conflicting opinions out there -- and everybody has their favorite diet.

Much of the advice you'll encounter is highly contradictory.

I say this as a guy who has read a lot of health and nutrition books and written some 200 articles about health and nutrition.

Ryan

It's no big surprise really just put out more energy than you eat taking in. I can stand to lose 15 lbs. myself nobody's perfect.

There's alot of fructose/sucrose in our foods ... cut that out and watch the weight come off. Fruits, veggies and minimal meat and you'll be looing like a Hollywood star soon enough Joel! You're not too shabby right now!

Good luck !!!

Absolutely Joel!
I will be following you up and will also start similar change in my life!
Best of Luck
Regards
Rawy

Joel,
If you've previously run a marathon then you probably have a decent idea of the path you need to follow for shedding that 40 lbs. Obviously starting to jog at 220 pounds probably isn't in your best interests but walking/biking/swimming with light weight training is a good start until a few pounds come off and you develop a fitness level where you can begin enjoying jogging again. And, of course, the diet has to be more selective. But, again, if you've run a marathon you're no fitness novice. Just a little out of practice.
Best of luck!

Great idea Joel to discuss this I have studied this for years and now now the truth I have proved it on myself. we need to repair our cells in our body with good quality Antioxidants to Ward off all the free radicals that are invading us and damaging our cells.when we get this done all the excess weight starts coming off we off course have to eat sensibly. All these amazing diets that abound all over the place are just money making concerns they do not address the cause. Great Health and Wellness to you and all.

Andrew

Hey Joel, if that's you in the photo, you really have let yourself go; not only that, you could do with a shave as well. Seriously, if you are going to take on this challenge get yourself checked out first, then take it easy to begin with; after a while who knows, you might even run another marathon.
Best wishes for the future.

This is not, btw, anything other than my thoughts & experience.
A few years ago I weighed 25 kilos (4 stone over here in the UK) and lost it merely by changing what I eat. Basically I reduced carb intake - target is less that 50gms per day. Cutting out pasta, cereals, sugar stuff and eating very little bread has done it for me. There's a wealth of hard evidence that exercise is not the solution.
I've just read about a woman with MS who's wheelchair bound. She couldn't weigh herself, but by shifting to a high fat, low carb diet, she has apparently gone down 3 bra sizes! Not that it applies to me. :o)

If you're interested, Google Dr Barry Groves. I've bought 2 of his books and have learnt a lot from what he says.

I've stopped taking high-blood pressure tablets since I discovered my "high" reading was, in fact normal for my age (67). I manage my diabetes with diet - as does my wife. For a diabetic, the standard ADA high-carb diet is lethal. After all, the body converts all carbohydrate to sugar. Makes us fat.

We both eat very well, btw.

Best wishes

Robin

Hey Brother,
I am with you. My weight is 235 but as you may remember, I am a lot shorter than you. Our children's pastor lost about 160lbs. I know what to do, you know what to do. Equation: Gotta burn more than you put in!!!!!!! The first step is a regular fast to get your flesh in line. THAT is the key! Without the fast, it will be a vicious circle.
Billy Rice

Way to go Joel. I think it will help your efforts going public like this. It will be cool to see your progress. I could use some motivation myself! Good luck.

Joel: I know exactly where you are coming from. I have been fat most of my life (and not just 255 pounds fat but more like 375 pounds fat. I am 6' 2'' tall, so it doesn't look as bad as it sounds. I have been wanting t put my commitment to lose weight on my blog to give me the incentive to do it, but so far have been chicken to do it.

After reading your post, I think the time has come.

Thanks for the encourgement.

Jim Hoag

I see why you are such a success in Marketing!!!!
Wish I could think like you.
Good luck with the weight loss.
Think of adding a good workout and a meditation session daily, and you've got it made in the shade.

okay... me too! I've lost 3 pounds ... ready to keep going!

How about a weigh in every week and i will lose some lbs with you Joel. Everyone should be on a diet around the holidays so the timing is great.

Joel

This is a very interesing post and I wish you good luck with your endeavor. But the man reason I took the time to comment was about that pic of the fat dog... Is that a real pic? If so rofl that is a fat dooooog!

Joel, you can do it if anyone can. I've seen the resolve with which you face problems and also seen how you looked thin. It will be difficult, but, however you decide to go about it. We're with you all the way.

Sheila and Sonny

You have already been an inspiration to me and I think I'll join you

Go for it Joel, you big fat fat fatty.

Hi Joel

I think that it is great that your trying to get back into shape. What you should remember is that you only need to lose a couple of pounds a week and exercise to keep trim as long as your doctor says it's ok for you.

And yes you can keep me notified on how you are doing. By getting other people involved in what your doing can also help them along the way.

Koodo for you
John

6'8" 292, 47 years old.

How do you know you are fat?

When you walk and thighs rub together-fatty.
When you tie your shoes, and the pressure on your gut and eyes, make you feel like you might pop-Fatty
When you have a hard time fitting your fat butt all on the toilet-FATTY

I started with Body for Life, love it, was at 310, now 292. It comes off in phases.....nothing...nothing...nothing...lose 3 pounds...lose 2 pounds. Something to look at.

Everyone chooses to be a FATTY.

Thats one mammoth dog? Go for it mate, you inspire many people including me x

Hey Joel
I applaud you in this endeavor. I would also like to lose about 50 pounds. I will follow along with you and do the same thing. I am 61 years old so I am past time for this

Joel,

Great idea! best wishes!

Joel, good luck with your weight loss journey. Although I blog mostly about running, you might find some of my posts on weight loss helpful.
