I cant believe you've been developing a mobile marketing system for 3 years now when most of us are just hearing about it now. That's some amazing foresight on your part.
I have to admit very few believed it'll catch on so soon. The rate at which its moving is sure fast and one needs to ride the tide before it dies down or stabilizes let alone attract more competetion like most marketing channels do after a while.
I am eying this trend with great interest and have been to a few seminars about mobile marketing.

Great idea. There is certainly a lot of potential in mobiile marketing. A few questions come to mind however. We can already choose to get twitter and facebook messages sent via text. Emails are already delivered to mobile phones. What is the advantage of having another message on top of what we can already get from mobile devices?

Hi Joel, I just tried texting that number gotext with joel as the message and it came back and said unrecognized command and then gives options help,stop,and join. Tried them and get no response at all. I'm in the us and using nextel but that shouldn't make a difference i wouldn't think. Let me know what I'm doing wrong.

My mobile, when I had one, was switched off far more often than not, plus I live in the UK, so even if I had one, that number wouldn't work for me, would it?

I've never had a cell phone. Never wanted one. This is just another reason not to get one. I'm inundated with marketing messages and solicitations as it is with e-mail, snail mail and landline phones. If this is the future of marketing, I pity the fools! :-)

Great point @Maureen regarding GEO tagging. I think GEO tagging/targeting will be "and is currently" an important part of mobile marketing ...for "local businesses" especially. Iphone apps such as google maps and yelp are becoming more popular. With 2 "touches" on my iphone I can pinpoint the closest coffee shop or highest rated Japanese Restaurant in my "current" location.
I'm skeptical however on SMS "push" marketing (could be a personal bias against it because I wouldnt want to consume my content this way) but respect Joel's insight. Only time will tell.

Just curious, is there charges involved in the texting sent & received? Please, I want to be clear on this, because I have already encountered problems,like having been billed (big -- like $10 per txt!) after giving out my number. Please clarify . Thank you!
