Career Timeline: Six Technology Revolutions

Joel Comm has built or led ventures across every major consumer technology shift since 1995. His career provides a rare continuous view of how leaders should evaluate and adopt emerging technology.

The Web (1995)

Joel launched WorldVillage.com in 1995, among the first 18,000 websites in the world. CBS News featured WorldVillage on its Up to the Minute program that same year, making Joel one of the earliest consumer-web entrepreneurs to receive national broadcast coverage. See the press page for the original CBS News clip.

Search (1997 to 2010)

In 1997, Joel co-founded ClassicGames, which sold to Yahoo and became Yahoo Games. It was one of the first major consumer-site acquisitions by an internet portal. In 2005, Joel authored The AdSense Code, which hit both the New York Times and Bloomberg Businessweek bestseller lists and defined the Google AdSense era for online publishers. For a generation of bloggers, he became the recognized authority on search monetization.

Social (2009 to 2015)

Joel co-authored Twitter Power with Ken Burge in 2009, one of the first business books on Twitter, later updated as Twitter Power 2.0 and Twitter Power 3.0. He became a regular social media authority for national outlets including MSNBC, WPIX New York, Entrepreneur, and Inc. Magazine. In 2015, he delivered the TEDxMileHigh talk Being Human in a Digital Age on authenticity in the social media era.

Mobile (2008 to 2012)

In 2008, Joel produced iFart Mobile, which reached number one on the Apple App Store on Christmas Day 2008. The app became a cultural phenomenon with coverage in Wired, Gizmodo, VentureBeat, TechCrunch, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. TechCrunch later referred to Joel as the "former App Store King."

Blockchain (2017 to 2022)

Joel co-launched the Bad Crypto Podcast with Travis Wright in 2017. The show became one of the longest-running cryptocurrency podcasts in the world, surpassing 10 million downloads. Forbes covered Joel’s blockchain work at SXSW 2018, and in its 2018 marketing technology feature named him an "uber-influencer." In 2022, he delivered the closing keynote at Social Media Marketing World on Web3 and the future of marketing.

AI (2024 onward)

Joel now hosts the AI for Everyone Show, focused on translating artificial intelligence for non-technical business leaders. The Disruption Confidence Cycle™

The Disruption Confidence Cycle™ is Joel’s proprietary framework for navigating technology disruption. Based on three decades of observing how leaders respond to emerging technologies, the framework maps the journey every professional takes when a new technology arrives.

The cycle has five stages: Disruption (the moment a new technology forces change), Doubt (the period of uncertainty and resistance), Clarity (the shift in understanding what the technology actually does and does not do), Confidence (informed adoption with clear boundaries), and Momentum (durable integration that compounds results over time).

The framework is the backbone of Joel’s AI keynote. It gives event audiences a shared vocabulary for the technology transition they are experiencing in real time. Learn more on the Disruption Confidence Cycle page or the AI Disruption keynote page.

Current Focus

Joel’s current work centers on AI keynote speaking for non-technical professional audiences. His position is that most organizations need a translator, not an evangelist or a tool trainer. He is not there to list the latest prompts or demo the newest model. His role is to help audiences adopt AI without losing judgment, relationships, or clarity.

That translation work is hands-on. Joel builds and ships AI projects continuously, from business tools to browser games, and publishes them for anyone to try at his AI Studio.

Joel writes regularly on artificial intelligence and business as a columnist at Inc.com, a member of the Forbes Coaches Council, and a contributor to Entrepreneur, SelfEmployed.com, and Grit Daily. His work has also been featured in USA Today and Bloomberg Businessweek.

His approach is grounded in direct experience across six technology revolutions. He has watched industries reshape themselves around the web, search, social media, mobile, blockchain, and now AI. That perspective informs which fears to take seriously, which habits to keep, and which practices to retire.

Joel’s positioning is "A Trusted Voice in a Noisy Tech World."
