Are You Finding Everything Okay?
Everyone has their pet peeves, present company included.
Being Saturday, I had to go to the store for a couple different things. I needed to pick up a framed poster at Hobby Lobby and I took my son to Best Buy so he could spend a gift card.
At Hobby Lobby, I approached the checkout lanes and found there was only one girl handling all the customers. I took my spot in line behind the lady she was currently helping, noticing that the lady had many items.
The line grew behind me and they finally called for more help to the front lanes.
When another cashier showed up, the people behind me didn’t even give me the option to go first. They rudely jumped in so they could get out first.
Whatever…
But the cashier was moving incredibly slow… taking her time with the lady in front of me.
I started to get agitated.
But I have learned to try to be patient.
Finally, after the other cashier had checked out everyone that had previously been behind me, it was my turn to checkout.
The girl greeted me was an oblivious smile and asked “Did you find everything okay?”
AAArgh!
I really hate that question.
“Yes, I walked in the store… and lo and behold, there was EVERYTHING! Right before my eyes. Yep, I found everything.”
Now, I know what the question means… “Did you find everything you were looking for?”
If I WERE looking for something, I’m sure I would have had the common sense to ASK an employee while still shopping. I sure wouldn’t wait to get to the checkout lane, wait for ten minutes while the cashier moved like molasses, and then ask where I could find something!
The cashier had me sign the charge card slip and proceeded to take the receipt saying, “And now I will staple your charge receipt to your store receipt” (with just a little too much glee in her voice about the whole thing…)
I snagged the credit card receipt before she could commit this atrocity (my bookkeeper hates when receipts are stapled!) and wished her a pleasant day.
Next, I went to Best Buy.
It was “The Attack of The Blue Shirts”.
Everywhere I turned, “Are you finding everything okay?”
“Are you finding everything okay?”
“Are you finding everything okay?”
AAAARGH!
“YES! I see DVDs. I see software. I see MP3 players. I see cell phones. I see video games. I see freakin’ washers and dryers! YES YES YES! I am finding everything okay, OKAY?”
The ultimate irony came about fifteen minutes later when I noticed that a program I wanted to buy was no longer on the shelf.
I tried hunting down an employee to check the stock room for me.
None were to be found…

FINALLY!! Someone who feels the same way! I tell my wife and everyone I know how much I hate that question. Are you finding everything okay? I usually tell them no, everything is not okay, some of your stuff sucks; What does that mean?. I usually don’t get a smile after that.
I completely agree!!! What does that mean anyway? Are you finding everything ok? How did they know I was looking for anything? Maybe I’m just browsing on my lunch break. Not looking for anything. Stop asking me the same dumb question every five minutes during my entire visit. If I have a question I promise I will ask you.
Yes, being asked this inane question repeatedly makes me walk out of the store. Being asked “did you find everything ok?” When I am paying at the checkout is even worse! On occasions when I’ve told the cashier that, no, I did not find what I was looking for, I’ve gotten blank stares. If they are asking, you would expect them to jot down which item I did not find to report back to the manager or something. I mean, why ask if you don’t care?
Keep in mind that there are two reasons for asking that question. One, if you are attempting to steal something knowing that someone is there watching is a deterrent. So to keep shoplifters honest employees are trained to ask that question. It may aggravate you but if the company keeps shrinkage down, prices stay down. So which would you prefer higher prices and no customer interaction or lower prices and that pesky question. Two, if you did forget something better to know before you get home than walk in the door and realize you didn’t pick up the new Kelly Clarkson CD for your Daughter like you promised.
