Become Your Audience

Lots of people set out to make money online by selling a product whose audience they don’t fully understand. They might make some logical conclusions based on a set of facts and decide that a given product has the potential to make a lot of money. But do they really put themselves in their customers’ shoes? Not only do you need to know your niche inside and out, you also need to understand your competition and make sure you are looking at potential products not with the eyes of a businessperson or entrepreneur, but with the eyes of a customer who has a certain set of problems. How can you truly help them with your product? To answer this question, you need to become your audience, if only for argument’s sake.

Where Does Your Audience Gather?

One great way to become your audience is to actually meet and talk to them, either in person or online. To do this, you might need to do a little brainstorming about where exactly your audience members can be found. Do they frequent certain industry forums? Do they attend a certain kind of Meetup or networking event? Do they shop in certain stores? Find your audience and get to know them if you don’t already. The extremely large side benefit to doing this kind of research is that once you have a product to sell, you will know exactly where to go to market it!

What Generates Excitement for Your Audience?

What is it really going to take to get your target audience so motivated that they not only willingly click that ‘Buy’ button, but go looking for it themselves? You may be able to partly answer this question by doing step one and finding them and asking them, but you can also get an idea of what will motivate them by looking at other products in your field that have achieved major success. What was it about these products that made people want to buy them? The answer is often a little more nebulous than you would think. It is often the case that the most successful products are the ones that can inspire and motivate, or just to help people see themselves and their potential in a new light.

What Does Your Audience Value the Most?

Find out what’s important to your audience and then seek to be that. Are they looking for trustworthy sources of information? Do they want to be pampered? Are they just looking for the most bang for their buck? Find out what qualities your audience most respects and then cultivate them yourself.
