Is the Biographic the Next Wave in Infographics?

Infographics are nothing new. For the past few years, we’ve seen thousands of very cool creations demonstrating and displaying information in a way that makes it easily digestible.

While often seeking to explain something with visually pleasing data, sometimes infographics have been created to highlight the accomlishments of someone’s life work. It’s not unusual to see people such as Donald Trump, Steve Jobs or Michael Jackson spotlighted in a creative work.

It’s also become trendy for job seekers to create an infographic designed to help them land their next position. There’s a good reason for this. Infographics work!

However, how many people have you seen with an infographic that acts as sophisticated digital business card?

People ask me what I do all the time. After more than eighteen years in this business, I sometimes get exasperated in attempting to answer because I have done so many things!

That’s why I decided to have an infographic created detailing the high points of my career. I’m calling it a Biographic! And so, I now unveil to you a brief history of an Internet entrepreneur, author and speaker.

I’m really pleased with the work that Matt Clark at Biographic.me did in designing this piece.

Now when someone asks me what I do, I can just refer them to this colorful, attractive piece. What do you think? Does it provide a clear picture of who I am and what I have done?

As always, your thoughts and comments are not only welcome, but sincerely invited!

  1. I just noticed the Biographic.me link at the bottom. Visited the site and it says it will be up and running in about 14 days. Since you have already used the site, will it be a paid service and how much will it cost?

  2. Hi Joel. Its interesting to note that you started with a Tandy (Radio Shack) TRS-80, I had two 5 and a half inch disk drives as well. That was how I started writing code and creating programs. those were the days. lol

  3. As usual, you dash to the finish line with a winner. Keep up the inspiring work and keep the work-life balance in perspective this time. And as you often say ‘do good work’

  4. When I saw “biographic” I thought Biology. Glad to see it’s “Biography” as I couldn’t imagine what it would look like if it was scientific.
Very cool & nice way to launch your new site.

  5. A fantastic “Biographic” Joel! It would be very difficult and more time consuming to get through an all-text version of that, but because the graphics and text are so well implemented, it almost comes across as a fun video without the sound. It also has a lot of “social proof” built in, like when you show a screen shot from an appearance n a TV show.

  6. First glimpse, I wasn’t compelled to read anything. But I read a couple things anyway, then a couple more, and then a few more. I like the story, and the graphics that kind of animate the story.

  7. Hi Joel,

This was certainly spectacular. Yours is a true story of how hard work, perseverance, expanding your knowledge base and applying best business practices leads to true success. What is doesn’t tell, but most of us know, is that you are a man of character, integrity and compassion. I wish you every success in your new endeavors.

    Sincerely,

  8. Actually I was a little disappointed. I was thinking it would be more interactive and brief. What about making a timeline biographic that you can shrink or enlarge based on tabs or filters the viewer selects? The tabs could be things like “personal”, “education”, “business”, flops, successes, etc. The viewer could also click buttons that link to docs, videos or photos. I like to see a lot in a short space and then zoom in on things that interest me.

    1. Hey Larry, those are great ideas for an interactive piece. Infographics are not designed to be interactive. What you are suggesting is something more suited for a website or an application. Thanks for your feedback!

  9. Great stuff Joel, and Larry’s idea is a ripper. Both of you have set me on a nice little project, but using a website page. Tabs and/or Accordion would work like a charm.
I don’t mind the long version of your Biographic Joel. Nicely presented, plenty of contrasting colour, not too much text. Just wondering if it could be clipped into a quick video, for those who prefer that form. No reason why not I guess. So, there are possibly a few ways to market oneself … and just with facts and no hype.
