What I Told 3,000 Marketers as the Closing Keynote at Social Media Marketing World

By Joel Comm | A Trusted Voice in a Noisy Tech World

Standing in front of 3,000 marketers at Social Media Marketing World, I watched heads nod as I described the familiar cycle. They'd mastered Facebook ads, then iOS 14.5 gutted their targeting. They'd cracked Instagram growth, then the algorithm shifted. They'd figured out TikTok, then came the shadow bans.

This is the reality of modern marketing. The platforms change the rules faster than we can learn them.

But here's what I learned from selling ClassicGames.com to Yahoo in 1998, launching the first iPhone fart app that hit #1, and watching my enterprise clients adapt through every major platform shift: the marketers who thrive aren't the ones with the best platform tactics. They're the ones who build unshakeable confidence in their ability to figure things out.

The Platform Trap Every Marketer Falls Into

I've watched this movie before. In 1995, I launched WorldVillage.com when there were fewer than 20,000 websites total. I saw businesses panic when Google changed its algorithm. I watched companies crumble when Facebook killed organic reach. I've seen marketers lose everything when their primary platform disappeared overnight.

The trap is thinking the platform is the strategy. It's not. The platform is just the delivery mechanism.

When Twitter hired me to speak to their enterprise clients, I didn't teach them Twitter tactics. I taught them how to think about communication in a networked world. When Microsoft brought me in, we talked about building relationships at scale. The specific features and tools were secondary.

Your audience exists before the platform. They'll exist after the platform. The question is whether you'll still be relevant when the next disruption hits.

How the Disruption Confidence Cycle Applies to Marketing

This is exactly the kind of challenge the Disruption Confidence Cycle was built to address. The framework maps how organizations move from uncertainty to confident action during times of rapid change.

Every platform follows the same pattern I call the Disruption Confidence Cycle. First comes chaos as the new platform emerges. Early adopters experiment while everyone else panics. Then stability sets in as best practices develop. Finally, everyone gets comfortable until the next disruption arrives.

Most marketers get stuck in the stability phase. They perfect their Facebook ads or LinkedIn campaigns, then freeze when change comes. They mistake familiarity with the tool for actual marketing skill.

The confident marketers I know treat every platform like a temporary rental. They extract maximum value while it's available, but they never stop building their core marketing muscles: understanding their audience, crafting compelling messages, and creating genuine value.

When iOS 14.5 decimated Facebook's targeting, my enterprise clients who understood customer psychology adapted fastest. When TikTok exploded, the marketers who already knew how to create engaging content dominated. They had transferable skills, not platform dependencies.

The Skills That Never Become Obsolete

After 45 years in technology and 17 published books on digital marketing, I can tell you what doesn't change: human psychology, storytelling principles, and the fundamental dynamics of trust and value.

The specific tactics evolve constantly. Email marketing looks different than it did in 2005. Social media advertising has transformed since 2015. But the underlying principles remain constant. People buy from those they know, like, and trust. They engage with content that entertains, educates, or inspires them. They recommend brands that exceed their expectations.

When I created The Next Internet Millionaire in 2007, we had no idea YouTube would become a billion-dollar marketing channel. But we understood that authentic video content would always resonate. When I started the Bad Crypto Podcast, we didn't predict it would generate 10 million downloads. But we knew that consistent, valuable content builds audiences.

The tools change. The principles endure.

Building Your Disruption Immunity

Here's my challenge to every marketer reading this: stop optimizing for the current platform and start optimizing for adaptability. Invest 80% of your energy in understanding your customers and 20% in mastering the latest features.

Test new platforms early, but don't bet the farm on any single channel. Build direct relationships with your audience through email lists, communities, and owned media. Develop your storytelling skills, your data analysis abilities, and your strategic thinking.

The next platform disruption is coming. It always is. The question isn't whether you'll survive it. The question is whether you'll be confident enough to thrive in it.

Start building that confidence today, because tomorrow's marketing success depends on the skills you develop when things are stable.
