Girl Born without a Face
This has got to be one of the most heart-breaking stories I have heard in a long, long time. It is one that actually had me weeping after seeing the video. It’s a story of God’s grace and of gratefulness for how good the majority of us have it in this life.
Jeannie Blaylock of First Coast News in Florida reported this story of a baby girl born without a face.
Here are some excerpts from the story…
When most parents have a baby, they spend months dreaming about what their bundle of joy will look like. Will she look like mom? Will he have dad’s eyes? But for one local Navy family, the birth of their daughter didn’t give them the answers to those questions. Their daughter was born without a face.
Little Juliana is missing 30 – 40 percent of the bones in her face.
“She has no upper jaw, no cheek bones, no eye sockets, and she’s missing the corner of her ear,” explains Tom.
Her birth defect is called Treacher Collins Syndrome. Doctors say it’s the worst case they’ve ever seen.
Juliana has to eat through her stomach, and she has a trach to breathe. Already, less than two years into her life, she’s had 14 surgeries. Doctors say she could need at least 30 more.
“God never gives you more than you can handle. I figure she has a lot to show everyone… to show the world,” says Tom.

The end of the article tells how you can get involved if you want to help the Wetmores. It’s a sad story, but it is also a testimony to how God can carry anyone through anything. Kudos to Tom and Tammy for giving Juliana the chance to live, and for loving her in spite of the incredible difficulties.
During Mrs. Wetmore’s pregnancy, her physicians believed that Juliana would have some minor facial anomolies; possibly a cleft lip and/or cleft palate. Juliana’s true condition had been unknown until her birth. Then, the Wetmores had to make an impossibly agonizing choice — although their child’s body was severely deformed, she had a fully-functioning brain. Who can even imagine controlling the “yes/no” switch in such a situation?
Juliana isn’t a “monster” or a “mutant.” She’s a highly-intelligent little girl who thinks, feels, and knows.
Ultimately, only Juliana can determine whether her parents made the right choice. Will she be happy that she’s alive, or will her life be untenable? Were all those surgeries worth the pain and suffering, or were they a cruel injustice? Can her bright, alert mind tolerate being behind a face that makes even the most compassionate among us recoil in horror?
Juliana’s little body wasn’t meant to survive. Without drastic medical intervention, she would have passed away within minutes. If I’d been Juliana’s parent, I *hope* that I would have had the courage to let her slip away peacefully. But, I wasn’t forced to make the Wetmores’ decision, so it’s impossible for me to know.
Just leave the poor girl alone, if I was her, I would hate being broadcasted throughout the world, as a tradgedy, and pitied on. I would just like to live a normal as possible life, wihout people saying “God will help” or “what an ugly girl” or even “It’s okay, you will get better” What if the way she is, is the way God made her to be!? Maybe, just maybe, he’s trying to teach us a lesson to accept are fellow brother and sister’s! And not have her face posted on hateful, or even pitying sites.
I say she’s perfectly fine the way she was made. I don’t care what any other hater, and or “Smart a**” wants to try to “prove” me wrong any other way.

As you may heard many times, that you get what you fear. A lot of parents are in fear in the pregnancy time, fear that a child is not normal developed or something goes wrong at the delivery, and how many young parents are so release when everything is fine and well.
This little girl without a face, looks like a happy child and in the same time she brings a lot of challenges with her. Her parents love and all this drama are a test to their strength how far they will be able to go were nobody before was. The doctors are challenge to reconstruct her face, which they may never had faced, when they never had that girl as a patient. God works his way, on the beginning we are disappointed, but love will cure it, and you never know what opportunity come from that. I know one day she will have a beautiful face and is able to eat like normal person. Just think about Helen Keller and what she became. There is always a reason why God put this challenge on families, maybe they don’t know it at that moment, but they make a big different in other people lives.

You support abortion if there is no chance the child will be loved? Seriously? You believe that when a child is born there is a chance it won’t be loved? I’ve heard this a few times before and it tends to send me into a tailspin with a desperate desire to make something very clear. Here is goes. Every child is loved that is brought into the world!! By me. By people with respect for human life. There are thousands of people on waiting lists to adopt. I adopted my first for instance. Just because there are people that are incapable of loving someone they’ve not met personally, or the baby they conceived incidentally…doesn’t mean there aren’t those that are loving enough to love those they’ve not had the opportunity to meet, YET. May sound crazy to some of you…but it’s true. There are those of us that will go to great lengths to love a child and give it a home, even babies that are not perfect or those whom we had not had the wonderful opportunity to meet yet. Not that we are anything special…we just LOVE. Just sayin’.

this family has my full respect and I admire them so much. And you can see that this soul has more to give to this world than many people that I have known. It makes you see how lucky you are and how greatful you should be for what you have no matter how misareble you might be in your own ego life.

I know a young woman who has a similar situation. She was born with cleft lip and palate and no eyes or eyesockets. Essentially there was no face. She is in her early thirties now and after all of the surgeries she’s had looks fine, has a job and is a well-adjusted, independent young blind woman. I hope this family knows that they are not the only ones.
As a Christian who believes in God more than she even believes in herself, I want to thank you for standing up for God! I feel sorry for people who say they don’t believe in God because their missing out on so much.
This precious girl (and other precious children and adults who have personal struggles) is an inspiration. Anyone who says negative things in a thread such as this one does her a great disservice.
Why not simply say, she’s an inspiration and I wish her and her loved ones the best?!
hello don’t mean to sound mean but mutant would be an apropriate word to describe her since the problem was caused by a genetic mutation (don’t like the way the earlier person wrote it) and hopefully in the (most likely very far away) future it will be used to identify genetically enhanced beings for some of these mutations could possibly be manipulated to give people an edge in life i was born with a genetic defect but mine is mental not physical it’s asperger syndrome more easily remembered as assburger syndrome some people that have it don’t like calling it a disability so they call it a difference in personality really i don’t care what people call it but i look at it like it’s an advantage i mean really you get heightened intelligence and have less sympathy sounds great to me anyways i do hope your daughter has a fulfiling life and for my what i belive in concernning god or gods is that anything is possible, i like to keep an open mind
I’ve read many of the comments posted… for the both ridiculous, yet remarkable span of six years… ridiculous due to the approximately 50% of poorly thought out, wise-ass remarks… and yet incredibly remarkable due to the other half I’ve read posted through all of those six years, the span of time I’ve seen society slowly decay in the true beginning of this new millenium…
Whether it be in movies, music, politics, television, the media, hell, even cartoons and wrestling [yes, I openly admit to being a WWE, TNA, Nickelodeon, Disney, AND Cartoon Network fan… all since I was about three or four. And… I’m now 23. … Don’t judge me.] Ask a fan / witness of any of these though… rock music… pop music… rap, country, sitcoms, drama, action movies, the news, talk shows, the radio, the internet, sports, and children’s tv. Everything… EVERYTHING… has deteriorated.
Some would say this is just one of the many signs of the upcoming end of the world, with society’s decay and all that. These people could be religous.
Some would say that evolution is going through a phase, as it has for millenia upon millenia. These people could base their ideas on pure logic, fact, and scientific data.
Some would say that everything’s better than it’s ever been, and that people like me are nostalgic fools who only believe what they choose to remember. These people are of course 14 year old kids, who don’t know any better, and should get EDUCATED!
… of course, that’s just my opinion… nothing more, nothing less…
The bottom line is, through it all… through six years… if I’ve gotten anything out of reading all of this, it’s atleast this one thing ; reading over this past half decade of posts, I’ve realized, that some people, whether they be atheist, christian, liberal, conservative, male, female, old, young, or whatever, STILL are able to make a post that actually CONTRIBUTES… something hard to find nowadays.
And the main, recurring idea, that I see repeated no matter the year, no matter the gender, age, religion [or lack thereof], political ideology, country, race, or anything else… is that usually, when I’ve read one of the posts that I agree with in some way, whether entirely or only partially…
… is that they all state one of the FEW things, if not THE ONLY THING, that is fact, unquestionably, and undeniably, in this entire sordid ordeal. And that is, that what they’re stating is exactly what it is.
An opinion.
That’s exactly what so many people have lost focus on, and need to take into account nowadays… myself, admittedly included. Half of what we say and think is our opinion. Nothing more. Nothing less. And all the people that have said that the money could’ve been used more appropriately on other things… think about that for a second.
Time is money, as they say.
And a hell of alot more of it could be better spent doing more constructive things than arguing, online, in a thread that was posted when I was 17 years old, and just getting out of high school.
Like stepping away from the computer altogether. Really… it’s pretty much the number one evil there is now, when you think about it.
It’s time we all started growing up…

God’s world is full of peculiarity. Brave are the men who have courage to make things better. I have seen something like this in my life.

For those who say that her parents shouldn’t had let her live.. you should take a look at her website. She’s a happy little girl, she has brothers and sisters, she goes to school, she dances .. yes she had to go through some very tough things, and she will have to during all her life, but she’s not the only person on the world to suffer, or not able to eat by herself, or not able to breath by her nose. How could you refuse her the right to be happy ? Who are you to say that ? I think that if somebody asked her, she wouldn’t want to die …

The notion that this little girl shouldn’t have a chance at life is ridiculous. Medical science exists for the sole purpose of helping this girl live the most productive life she can.
HOWEVER … to say God has a thing to do with it is equally ridiculous. If God really wants to “help out” He should not give us these burdens in the first place.
The young girl, with the love of her family will do just fine with or without God’s help.
Katie. I believe that everibody has the reason to be on this planet. And all of us is making the choice befor comming. It is so easy to say that God does not exist. We are too small to complain and put under quiestion that how God let such things to happen. So lets look at it from this point of view: God is asking, Do you realy want to try this? It wont be easy. Answer: yes I want to becom strong enough experiencing this.
1. A baby is a baby and if it’s born to you then you love it with all your heart it doesnt matter what they have you know you’ll love it with intense love.

Im adopted, might not have any problems but hey my biological mom gave me for adoption, she could have thrown me away or adoreded me if she wanted to but she didn’t so thanks to her I was given a chance in life. Even if I don’t know her, I thank her for what she let me have which was a life. And that alot to me. For where ever you are thank you.
3. I support these parents because they seem to be so brave, loving and caring to bad people can’t see that and just judge but hey their fucking bitch how don’t have a brain nor a heart but to that chick who was talking smack; I hope you never have children I really do because you might find something wrong with them then kill them or just not give a shit about them so I suggest you use a condom all the time because GOD knows we don’t need your off spring here so they can suffer because of you

I am now 62 years old. I was born with some noticable facial defects: One eye missing and an asymmetrical nose. I have had 5 operations on my
face and the defects are still apparent.
Physically, I could get along fine with the defects. It is the social shunning of people that is most hurtful. I was called names, pushed and shoved all by children through out my childhood because other children did not like me because of my defects. As an adult, I continue to be shunned: Never invited to parties, wedding etc. When I try to talk to people, most people stare at me for a second then break eye contact with me. I am usually ignored.
I have felt from the time the social rejection started in childhood that the doctors did me a great disservice by saving my life after I was born. The most humanane thing to do would have been to just let me die just after I was born. The doctors’ heroics provided me with a life time of suffering and anguish.

I guess you could say I am a ‘mutant’ according to your terms. Fact of the matter is, I was blessed with a physical uniqueness that has helped shape me into an understanding, empathetical human being. I’ve come to realize, that just through living my life –I give countless others (maybe not yourself) more fortunate than me a reason to feel thankful for what they have.
Hi, i was born with a deformality, my mouth is deformed. My lips are paralyzed so they cant close so you can always see my teeth and they used to be way cruked (i have braces now). I lived a happy childhood, sure people stared at me but i just ingored them. Juliana is a strong girl, her parents are even stronger for cooping with her and giving her a oppertunity to live and loving her soo much. A person with a deformality can live a happy life you know, it’s just that society is way cruel and dosent treat them the same way as *normal* people, which is wrong. We ALL deserve to be treated equally, looks arent evrything, people need to learn that.
This is very very sad. Hopefully she can overcome the test given to her and fight all odds to be happy and accomplished in life. God bless Juliana.
Your spirit is so beautiful. I have only read a few comments and I am so appalled. What sort of society do we live in? Children are disposable? Marriage can be thrown out if you don’t “feel” the same after 10 years? Julianne was born into this world to a mother who didn’t know she was severely deformed. The odds were against her, it is a miracle she has lived this long. Her brain is perfect! She can sign, she can communicate, she is a living breathing human being. There is a purpose for this little angel and none of us here may ever know it, but God knows it!
I really do hope that these people spewing this hatred and encouraging euthanizing and abortion never EVER have children. God never forgets and the word that is spoken has a way of coming back around and biting you in the butt.

I think this child has the right to live she can suffer the pain now but enjoy the happiness later. Basicly saying end the 10-20yrs misery or enjoy the 60yrs of happiness n im just estamating the numbers.
I saw most of this documentary last night. It brought me to tears. What an amazing, beautiful child Juliana is. I really respect and admire her parents for their strength. To be honest, all the “mutant” comments make me sick to my stomach. All of you out there please remember you have not lived your life out yet, and you never know whats going to come knocking on your door tomorrow. This family showed me what real love and courage is all about. I wish more people had their backbone and guts. I wish I did.

This is whats wrong with the world today!! She is a beautiful child in and out. Period!! Shes not a poor child!! If you watched Julianna on television she is playing, running around and doing all things that kids her age do..How can you call that suffering??!!
It’s not right to call her names because she is made in the image of God. God has a purpose for her. It’s easy to hide behind the internet and comment about her without facing up to your worlds. To all of those who are calling Juliana a mutant and to put her out of her misery are obviously uneducated about any disease let alone Treacher-Collins. Juliana is COGNITIVELY INTACT! There is nothing wrong with her brain or her mind (I figured I would break down the word cognitive for those of you who have no idea what you are talking about). She is a very strong, compassionate girl who happens to have a very severe facial anomoly. She is the most amazing child who continues to persevere and in my opinion has a better life then those of you saying horrible and evil things. Take the time to do some research and watch Juliana before you throw stones. Oh and this child’s soul is pure…perhaps your rotting soul should leave your intact body!
I cant understand people who relate something as awful as this to god? Most of us do have a lot to be grateful for to be lucky enough to live a normal life, but unfortunately this little girl wont be able to understand what that is. Her brain is her prison.

My nephew has treacher collins – not as severe as Juliana who – I am going to say at the risk of being abused – is beautiful. To all those who say she is not, she has a beautiful heart, brain and soul, which is a lot more than I can say for you. Her parents are testament to how loving and giving a human being can and should be – they are here to show us what we are capable of in this hateful world if we open our hearts. My nephew is a gorgeous and loving little boy and the world would NOT be a better place without him! It breaks my heart to hear of peoples comments that someone should be aborted because of how they look. There are some people in this world who are just plain ugly (on the inside) it would be great if we could determine if someone was going to be an awful person and abort them….(sarcasm here of course)

I saw this on tv for the first time today! I have to admit when I first saw this baby I was taken aback, however, after watching and seeing what awesome parents this little girl has in her life all I can say is that their love is a pure example of God’s love. They loved her despite everything everything they had to overcome. I wish nothing but the best for this family. What an example of God’s unconditional love. I hope we can all learn from this amazing family. This little girl is truly a miracle and people should sit up and take notice! I can’t say enough about how this story has moved me.As for people and their horrible comments, judge not as the bible says!!
Stories like this are infuriating. There is the usual hoard of weeping women who say “She’s so beautiful.” Any sane person who looks at this poor creature would say quite the opposite.
The real abomination is this: How many partially handicapped or abandoned childred, or children from war-torn countries could have had decent lives if the money that is poured down the drain for this child was spend on them? A hundred? A thousand?
This is nothing more than gross selfishness on the part of the parents. They are so self centered that they think that because this creature is made of their DNA it is worth any amount of other people’s – i.e. taxpayers – money spent to keep this thing alive.
