Honda Cog Commercial

You’ve got to see this. Honda has come up with one of the best tv commercials I have ever seen. The ad took five months of pre-production and 605 takes to get it right. It is called “Cog”. Enjoy it here

  1. That is so incredible it is nice to see people still using their minds. I am much more impressed by this commercial than someone yelling at me!! GO HONDA!!!

  2. I have one big problem with this whole thing. How did they get the tires to defy gravity and roll uphill? Also some of the balancing in the thing is WAY off…

    1. The tires were weighted so that they are balanced in their starting position. When tapped, the weight then is off balance and produces enough torque to make the wheel roll up hill.

  3. It’s a great commercial! It’s on TV here in Australia but the best part is that it was done without the aid of computer enhancement. Sure has everyone talking.

  4. dood, use your brain the put weights in the exact top center of the wheel so the wieghts when shifted from equalibrium would “defy gravity”

  5. It’s called Rappers Delight by The Sugarhill Gang from their self titled album. It is acknowledged as a milestone in rap and has been covered a lot. It was recently made famous by a grandmother performing the song in the movie The Wedding Singer.

  6. I need to know the name of the song that is played in the honda element commercial with the guys surfing. If anyone knows it please email me!!!!!

    Joel’s reply…
It is Grandmaster Flash performing Rapper’s Delight. It was the very first rap song to enjoy widespread radio play.

  7. Der lauf der dinge (le cours des choses) – David WEISS & Peter FISCHLI (1987) is the version I know, pretty cool, about half an hour of the same stuff…if It took honda 600 takes, I dont want to know how many this one took…

  8. ok, while we’re on the topic of songs, there’s one that’s really been bugging me. included phrases are: “i’m lost and i’m found and i can’t touch the ground,” and “say a prayer for me” is a pretty heavily repeated line. I believe that the song starts with the phrase “now i wake up…”

  9. Neonstock was the only person to get the title and artist of the song right. The rest of you, stop spreading bad lies. If you’re going off the title you downloaded off Kazaa it’s wrong.
SugarHill Gang released Rappers Delight in September of 1979 and was considered the first hip hop song. It influenced Run DMC to do a cover version and many of his other great hits.
As for the commercial. If it is real, then why have I only seen the file in flash? Where is the avi format of it? Also when the wiper blades move because of the electricity, they suddenly stop when you leave the shot they were in? wouldn’t they keep making noise in the background? Can anyone else say fake?
I also have yet to read a single article from Honda where they claim it was real and no computer animation was done. This myth of 605 takes seems to be a fabrication of misc. internet users trying to spread more bad rumours.

  10. It’s a pity that David’s encyclopaedic knowledge of Hip-Hop and Rap history isn’t matched by a bit of research.
I was looking for details on “The Cog” a few months ago and a quick Google search brought up the “Making of..” details on Honda’s corporate website.
As for the wiper blades… You’d like to believe that if a car manufacturer developed windscreen wipers that that came on automatically when the screen got wet – they would remember to arrange it so they turned off automatically when the windscreen was dry.

  11. Who cares if it is real or not?! It is still a cool commercial, and very creative with the ideas for the different car parts. Like the critics could have done better.

  12. the wheels rolls up the hill like that becuase they are bolted and weighed. look it up on google, and you will actually find articles detailing the commercial peice by peice. the thing is real, there maybe tricks behind some of the stunts, but they are done in real time!

  13. speaking of songs again, there’s a new honda element commercial…i just saw it today while watching football. what is the song in that one?? it’s real slow with an acoustic guitar, and they say something like “i had a dream i was under an orange sky” does anyone know what song that is???

  14. How did you make the tires go uphill? and how did the third tire once it hits the last one it still going up? and one last thing how they did to make the can go straight without bumping between the window and the board? please somebody tellme my email is [email protected]

  15. Ok, all you people who claim it’s not fake….tell me where in the reflections can you see the dolly and crane that is carrying the camera around? It definitely isn’t being carried by a human being because too much automation of the camera was necessary for those incredibly smooth shots. You need a dolly and crane for that…which there wasn’t.
Plus, you can tell when the reflections are raytraced from the 3d modelling program they faked it in. Honda’s full of s***. They only bragged that they did it in “real time” because it makes them sound better than they really are. There are so many tell-tale signs of 3d modelling that any experienced modeller can easily pick out.
Granted, it’s still good though. But I don’t buy the crap that Honda tries to play that it’s real.

  16. “the song at the end is not rappers delight it sounds similar but it is actually triple trouble by the beastie boys”
this comment shows your age, son… The Beastie Boys are just using a sound clip from Rapper’s Delight and mixing it. I have the LP record with both the short and long versions of the song, and they originated those famous few seconds of beats… even Queen used something similar in that another one bites the dust song …
You probably think that “All Along the Watchtower” was first done by the Indigo Girls or by Jimi Hendrix…. you would be wrong… it was a poem that Bob Dylan wrote and used it in a song.
I would be willing to bet that 25% of all music background tracks are sampled from previous artists…

  17. um hey- there is the honda commercial where…the song is really fast and a girl is singing and all i can make out is “al al alangalangalang al al” it sounds like that sorry -can someone help?

  18. Does anyone know the name of the song in the Honda Accord commercial that shows a Guitar and Amp and you can hear the guitar playing and the narrater says something like: “This is what a ’57 Gibson sounds like through a 250 watt CD sound system.” Or something like that. It’s a cool riff that I’m trying to learn but it’s hard to figure out with the narration in the way. PLEASE let me know.

  19. what is the name of the song in that honda commercial where they had animals(like deer and owls) inside bare car frames? it was purely instrumental without any lyrics which is why im haveing such a tough time finding it.

  20. Hello! I hope someone can help me, many years ago there was a commercial about a car (i guess Ford) there was the car driving in some kinda landscape and then they showed a white skinned girl with dark hair singin opera(she looked like 14/16) like in front of a waterfall dressed in white, it was a very soft song.. hope someone can tell me where to find the video or the name of the song it started with “It’s time to….” Thank You!

  21. Greg. I’m not a physicist. But it looked like those tires may have had something moving inside of them that could cause the momentum to shift. Or maybe a certain part of the rim was heavier than the rest. If you watch the middle tire on the ramp, after it hits the last tire, it starts to go back down, then reverses and slightly goes back up again. So there’s probably something within the tire that causes it. But I don’t think it’s far-fetched, just clever.

  22. Time for a music lesson (from a 25 year old)
That’s not the Beastie Boys dude. I hope you don’t also think that Fred Durst wrote “Behind Blue Eyes” (The Who) or that Lenny Kravitz wrote “American Woman” – a song written by a band that you probably never even heard of – The Guess Who, NOT The Who, The Guess Who.
Eminem didn’t write “Dream On” (Aerosmith). Aerosmith didn’t write “Come Together” (The Beatles). Vanilla Ice stole his beat from David Bowie and Queen. The Ataris didn’t write “Boys of Summer” (Don Henley). Guns n Roses didn’t write “Live and Let Die” (Paul McCartney and Wings). Puff Daddy did not write Kashmir (Led Zepplin). Actually, I’m not sure if Puffy Diddy dee doo dah wrote any of his songs. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band did not write “Blinded by the light” (Bruce Springsteen), although Manfred’s version is better. N-Trance did not write “Stayin Alive” (Bee Gees), nor did they write “Da ya think I’m sexy” (Rod Stewart). Some rap group redid “Breakfast in America” by Supertramp. Another redid “Africa” by Toto. Another redid “Talking in Your Sleep” by the Romantics. A metal band redid “Shout” by Tears for Fears. “Runaway Train” was written by Soul Asylum, not Tom Petty, who wrote a different song called “Runaway TrainS.” “Momma Told me Not to Come” was written by 3 Dog Night, not that dumb rap group that couldn’t write their own tune. The song “Cars” was not written by the band The Cars, it was written by Gary Newman. And even though Jimmy Hendrix didn’t write “All along the watchtower,” it’s still awesome.
And by the way, the Beastie Boys didn’t write “Bennie and the Jets” either, just in case you were wondering.
