How I Lost 55 Pounds in Five Months

Being unhealthy is no fun. I spent many years being obese and not having energy. I had finally had enough.
A couple months back I wrote about how I went from 225 pounds to 175 pounds, dropping eight inches off my waist.
But people continue to ask me how I lost so much weight.
So I decided to shoot a video to review the basics of “The Joel Comm Diet.”
I have to be honest with you. When I saw some of the “before” images of me that were used in this video, I was taken aback. I don’t remember being THAT big. I thought my producer actually stretched an image of me to make me look bigger than I was! He didn’t. I WAS that big.
Watch and see for yourself.
If you are interested in trying the Shakeology drink that I have been consuming for over six months, I highly recommend it. Click here for Shakeology.

It’s amazing to me how we can reverse years of damage to our bodies by deciding to raise our standards for ourselves, then living differently. Old wounds heal, injuries repair, and the whole system improves with just a few changes in what we put into our bodies and how we move them. You’re truly an inspiration and great leader for so many people including myself. I’m jumping on my treadmill now!
Congratulations on moving to a more healthy life! You are an inspiration to others. I like that you said “do what works for you.”
Keep up your great work and keep the weight off!
Hey Joel,
Very inspiring.
I m exactly where you used to be.
Going to try your plan.
Dont like to eat heavy during the day, it bogs me down and I like the idea of biggest meal at night…because snacking at night is hard not to do.
Did you take any additional supplements?
Rob
Congratulations Joel 🙂 That is a great achievement. Man you are looking soooo much younger, stronger and more healthy. Keep up the good work and do even more good stuff!
You look great. Thanks for sharing.
I’m really happy for ya Joel! It’s hard to lose that kind of weight.
I’ve been there and in my experience… it’s harder to keep it off. What you are on is a diet, and again, in my experience, every time you go on a diet… you also go off a diet. Your regiment of 2 meal replacements a day, a shake and a bar,and then a small dinner is hard to stick with the rest of your life.
I would encourage and challenge you to find a breakfast and lunch and dinner made of real healthy food that you can eat. Find what works for you… Could be a turkey sandwich for breakfast…
But re-learn to actually eat real healthy foods properly. That is something you can stick with and live a healthy happy life.
I follow Berta at http://www.justloseit.com. She is sensible, she cares and what she teaches works because she goes deeper that – hey i like snack foods and desserts, she helps you find the real cause for your eating poorly…
I struggle with this myself, but finally feel that I eat differently in a healthy way and follow a program that will keep me healthy for a long time.
Best of luck! God bless!
John
Bravo! You are “success.” I feel inspired by your comment that you “surrender” your weight in service to staying healthy for your family. Thank you for sharing your journey. As you probably know, the hard part….staying at a healthy weight…is now the path I encourage you to stay on. Paraphrasing you, “to your health.”
Darryl
Congrats Joel!
You are one of the most inspirational people who I have ever followed.
Keep the good work up 🙂
Very inspiring Joel!
The coolest part was the simplicity of your routine.
No need for all the complex stuff that fitness gurus teach you or stuff you see on infomercials.
Just plain ole common sense and a LOT of self-discipline.
Way to go “not a fitness guru” Joel. 🙂
David
congrats Joel.. on my weight loss journey to,, hopefully will see some nice results like you 🙂
Joel,
First, congratulations. That’s a tremendous act of love you just did for yourself and your family.
We used to call this “leadership by example” back in my Army days. It’s not the most common thing in the world. By “going public” and doing this, you will help encourage a lot of people to take better care of their God-given bodies, save people a lot of problems and money, etc.
Stay Strong,
Tom
That is pretty amazing Joel that you lost the weight so quickly! I tuned in when you started and thought I would cut back on my eating but that is just about all I did but not in a dedicated fashion. I was the same weight and height as you and only have lost about half of the weight you have.
I need to get the exercise component into my routine to make the difference.
Good job!!
Chris
Hey Joel,
I have always appreciated your, tell it like it is, no hype style.
Marcus
Congratulations Joel! It is amazing how in this modern society we over complicate so many things. But you hit the “secret” for weight loss on the head: eat less, exercise more. Dead simple.
Bill
I’m mighty proud of your achievements Joel, and YES, you certainly have inspired many people… I thank you for that.
If we’re going to see a reversal in the rising obesity trend, we’re going to need to hear more people like you, sharing their fun and simple approach.
I have really respected you for not hopping on any fitness bandwagon or fad. You did what felt right for you… something that you enjoyed… something that you could stick with. To me, that’s the key.
As a fitness professional, there are many moments that I sit in reflection and worry about the overwhelm and confusion that the fitness industry has caused. They have overcomplicated the fat loss process, which is why we need more people to speak out about their simple approach that allowed them to enjoy this lifestyle change.
I’m really proud of everything that you have accomplished and am very excited to hear the excitement in your voice as you talk about continuing your journey.
Keep up the great work Joel!
Hi,
Well done..
I lost over 80 pounds in 2006 in a similar way..
I felt great, with more energy, better sleep and self esteem. But the core reasons to why I was fat were not addressed. Now I am as big as I was before the diet. I have learned that I need to undo my habits and find the real cause to why my body feels comfortable being fat..believe me Self discipline is easy…but it’s not the answer.

Thank you for sharing your success Joel. I am trying so hard to lose weight and have tried it all, weight watchers, counting calories, etc. I am taking your approach and hope to lose this excess weight and have more energy.
You look great Joel. You don’t mention your age in this post, but if you are close to 40, it might be worth noting (for the boomer markets).
Great job Joel, but that diet has affected your math, went from 225 to 175 and lost 55 lbs.?
Amazing work Joel. Can’t believe, from the outside, how fast that time went by. Make me think, Geez if I would just done it then, I would be skinny by now. Good news its never too late to make that choice and get your butt moving.
Wow, Great Job! You nailed it on the head. “WHAT WORKS FOR YOU”. I found out i work out better and more often at night. Most fitness experts suggest early in the morning, but it doesnt work for me. And keep it simple – eat less and exercise more. great “Story”

Joel! You look great. I am on a weight loss program also and you inspired me – like you, I love the treadmill. I don’t have one so I’ll have use one at the gym- right on the way home from work. The gym bad is in the car right now and 25 lobs from now- I’ll be back to let you know!!
Thanks!
Hi Joel, tremendous effort from you and you have shown the right way to people. The best part is that you have kept it simple and sober and i guess thats whats worked wonders for your body. All the best and take care.
Hey Joel, just want to say congrats!! Nothing like making a public commitment as a little leverage.
Kuds’ for walking your talk, you look fantastic!
My best, Chris
Hey Joel,
I have been following you for some time now and I must say that I can really see the difference. Keep up the good work!!!
Malik
Way to go, Joel!
My hubby is a personal trainer and he tells his clients the simple “secrets” you shared, too: eat less, exercise more.
I’m happy for your success in this all-important area. You won’t only be healthy and present for your wife and kids, but just think — someday you might be dancing at your grandchildren’s weddings because you lived a long healthy life and still feel great!
The photos are amazing! Now I need to get rid of about 10 pounds myself… hmmm….. eat less, exercise more… I can do that!
Felicia
Great video Joel.. the difference in you is amazing. You hit on a couple of key components in your process.. one is getting a big enough reason to make the change.. and the other is asking for help from the Divine. Putting yourself out there publicly to provide some motivation helped as well I would imagine. Doing that causes you to have to be answerable to someone other than yourself.
It’s really wonderful and sometimes amazing how the universe lines up to help us when we become determined to make a change. I did something similar last year when I went from 205 to 180, and I did it in a similar fashion to your process. I first became very determined to change and then I asked for help, and what came to me was yoga and bicycling for exercise, and for diet increasing my raw food intake and going almost completely vegetarian. I still eat fish maybe once a week and poultry once a month or so.. but I let my body’s intuitive faculty let me know what it needs and it does. Thanks again Joel.
Best regards,
Dr. John Michael Christian
Man, you look seriously great, what a difference and as a fitness fanatic myself, I know you feel a million dollars, nice one mate, keep it up.
Good stuff, Joel. You look amazing and so happy! Congrats – you’re a true inspiration.
Joel . . . You look great. Fantastic.
Congratulations Joel. I started with you but I flopped. I let life get in my way. I let work get in my way. I’ve just been in my way. You’ve inspired me to get back up and get started again.
Thanks for sharing you success!
Audrey
Your commitment to common sense is a leadership trait we need to see more of.
Keep in mind that your ultimate goal is health and fitness and that a smaller body is not neccessarily a healthier body.
Losing weight if it is fat weight is only one marker of health.
Your answer to losing the last couple pounds of fat is not on focusing on the scales but addressing your metabolism as most overweight, out of shape people have a dysfunctional metabolism.
Add the type of training that will add a couple pounds of muscle and that last stubborn fat will be used up in the process. You will also reap the benefits of a stronger, more stable, stronger bones and a more effective metabolism.
You are on the right track!
Congratulations on your weight loss success Joel!
As many people here have pointed out, keeping the weight off can be as difficult as dropping it in the first place.
After decades of yo-yo dieting that resulted in my becoming obese, a couple years ago I decided to focus on my mindset for weight loss instead of a diet. That has been an important success tool for me, because before then I just regained everything I had lost.
I’m in my 50s and am here to tell you that it can be done! We CAN drop those unwanted pounds. In order for us to do it permanently though most of us must first change our thoughts about our bodies and ourselves.
Once I declared “I Refuse to Diet” I was able to focus on what I was putting into my head instead of my mouth and I dropped 125lbs!
To our healthy, energetic and slender bodies–we deserve them!
Nice work Joel. Shakeology has worked for me too. Tell Dan nice work on sharing the Beachbody products with you.
Hey Joel,
You look great and I wouldn’t have recognized you now from since we met. Wonderful job. 🙂 I have been using a similar program with the Isagenix products. They also taste great and fill me up, plus good energy and nutrition. Also has a nutrional cleanse — I’ve maintained my weight loss and inches loss for over 2 years now with their 2 meals a day mainenance program (two shakes or one shake and one bar + snack like yours were in the weight loss program I started with).
I think it is wonderful that we can help people get healthy and feel good. I hope that you find that you are able to maintain the weight loss without going into a yo-yo pattern. Since I am close to retirement, I’ve been pushing for a golden life and named my site that — GoldenLife.Isagenix.com, so with good nutrition you should also plan on a having great life as well. Now I’ll check out Dan’s site too, for variety. Leading and supporting others is great. Thanks for the inspiration to keep going. Best wishes.
Hi Joel,i have a problem with my weight and i really want to loose some. Went to the shops yesterday and bought some shakes and diet stuff. I hope its gonna work.
Great weight loss, I’ve currently lost 9lb in just over a week, no shakes or anything, just by cutting down and eating at meal times, no booze,no fatty foods, and by going for long walks each and every day.
Pleased I found your blog Joel, I last saw you at Londons O2,Andrew Reynolds Bootcamp, it was a great seminar, loved it.
Andrew Reynolds is my mentor, never hear from him, just tons of DVD’s, now on information overload, not good lol
Thanx for the advice,i need to make plan and loose my weight. I have to start at some stage of my life.
Sir, your weight loss ideas are great. They inspire me, to try all those things you’re talking about in the video. Hip Hip Hurray.
Joel you look great. Congrats on your weight loss and sticking to your goals. I know its not easy, but you did it and you stuck to it. Awesome job.
Joel,
Thank you very much. I was looking for what to do now I has found it. That is great.
Great Job Joel!
I lost 45 pounds once also. What a great feeling! Loved the Adsense Code. Will now follow and learn from you. Thanks, Ryan
Joel! Congratulations! I just drank a Shakeology drink yesterday! I drink them at least 3-5 times a week. People may think it is a gimmick or something but it is far from it. I am 28, single mom and I have narcolepsy (sleep disorder which makes you feel tired all the time – although I do take meds for it, it doesn’t help enough). So, when I am feeling really fatigued and horrible – or just burnt out from mowing the lawn, from the long day and feel like I just want to sleep (but cannot) – I drink a Shakeology. I also drink it before or after a tough workout. It is the ONLY thing that honestly gives me a huge boost in energy and how I am feeling – and makes me feel better than anything else! I also do P90x – and I am also a coach with Beachbody like yourself. I just wanted to say Congratulations – you look absolutely incredible! I am so happy you shared this video and are putting yourself out there to inspire others! Awesome!!!
Wowzie! Your transformation is amazing!
I’m doing something similar on the diet side, but I’d be interested, if you are free to share it, what kind of t-mill you bought, and do you have any recommendations on the rack to use for, say, reading on the Kindle?
Thanks for your informative and inspiring content. I’ve had you bookmarked since your earliest Adsense training came out several years back.
