Scaling Your Online Business

It’s easy to become married to the work of building your online business, and in one sense, this is as it should be. Building anything from the ground up takes work and dedication, especially if like many fledgling entrepreneurs you are trying to budget your money wisely and do many things yourself. But the impulse can become detrimental. Many times you are so busy working in the trenches that you can’t see or don’t have time for looking at the bigger picture of your business. And sometimes even after your efforts have met with success you are still taking care of every last detail yourself. Call it being a workaholic or something else, but the time comes in every business where it might benefit everyone if you took a step back and started to think about ways to scale your business for when it is no longer a one-man or -woman show.
Outsourcing
Hiring employees is one way to take some of the burden off of your shoulders, and if you aren’t ready to hire full-time employees yet, then at least consider outsourcing some of the more mundane tasks that you perform in your business. It may seem as though you are the only one who will do it right, but that’s really not the case. Take the time to thoroughly train whomever you decide to hire, and explain carefully how you want things to be done and especially your standards and what you expect in important areas like customer service. It might take a little time upfront, but the time it frees up for you to consider bigger and better business moves will prove invaluable.
Tools
Be on the lookout for software and tools that can make your life easier. Maybe there are things that were out of your price range when you first got started that would bring considerable return on investment in terms of time if you were to purchase them now. Budgeting software, project management software, and time tracking tools are just a few ideas for ways that technology can help you run a more efficient business.
Automation
Look for ways to automate things whenever you can. Find yourself sending out the same emails every month? Have templates handy that go out on a schedule so that you don’t even think about them. Same thing for paying bills and for product shipment, if you sell a physical product. Look into fulfillment houses and take yourself out of the equation as much as possible. When your business is twice the size it is now, you’ll be glad you did!
