Seussical the Musical

seusscd.gifAbout three years ago, I came upon the soundtrack for Seussical the Musical at Amazon.com. Seussical is a Broadway production based on the works of the late Dr. Seuss. The story follows many favorite Seuss characters including The Cat in the Hat (the Narrator), Horton the Elephant, Mazie McBird, Gertrude McFuzz, a cast of Who’s and many more favorites, in a family-friendly joyful walk down memory lane. My family and I have worn out the CD (if you could do such a thing with a CD… ah, I miss records…) and knew the words to many of the songs.

At that time, the musical was only on Broadway and I knew we weren’t going to New York just to see the show, so we would wait until a touring group headed our way. Well, they finally made it to Oklahoma City and I took the family to see Seussical the Musical last night.

seuss1.jpgOnce I hear a soundtrack recording many times, I am hopeful that the live production will live up to the recording. In the past, I have been disappointed with the translation from studio recording to the stage. In this case, the live production exceeded my expectations. An extremely talented and gifted group of musicians, singers, actors and dancers provided a much-needed respite from the dailyness of life.

I’m not going to provide an in-depth review here, but I highly recommend seeing this show if it comes to your area. Zach and Jenna both enjoyed it thoroughly, and it gave me a few moments of feeling like a kid again.

  3. Hey! I am a seventh grader and my school is doing Seussical! I play JoJo Who even though I am a girl. I am upset because my drama teacher will not let me use my costume design which is bright, colorful, and all together Seussy! She wants me to wear pastels! EWW! It just doesn’t work. I have very pale skin and it will not look good! I hate it!!!!!

  4. haha sorry about the costume jojo but try to get over it to experience the best part of the show…the performing. and especially this show because it is so much fun! when i was a bird girl…our costumes took alot of getting used to and none of us liked them, but we dealt with it and put on one amazing show!
    im acually exiting my seussical phase because my school is doing oklahoma and i can’t get enough of that yipeee-i-o-ayyy

  6. My high school is perfoming this play nxt weekend and i cant wait… i got the part of Mrs. mayor, though kinda boring part, I am having a wonderful time doing it!

  7. HEYYY…my school isz doing seussical im sooo happy i made it…im a bird girl and I love it!!! Our play is sometime next month im sooo excited but kinda scared at the same time…my favorite songs r biggest blame fool and horton hears a who!! i cant wait…FUN…FUN…FUN!!!

  8. The play went totally awesome!!! this is an awesome arrangement of songs… many ppl from the town say its the best play that has ever been done at sigourney high school…… plus even tho we live in a town with only 2000 ppl we brought in about 2000 dollars !

  11. My middle school is doing a reproduction of Seussical and I was wondering…what exactly do the jungle characters do? My choir teacher hasn’t given me any information on it and I am playing one.

  12. My school is doing a reproduction of Seussical and I’m playing a fish. How in the world am I supposed to be a fish?!?
    My friend is a jungle citizen and she doesn’t know how to dress for it.

  13. Hello everyone! One of the local theaters is doing Seussical. I haven’t been called back yet, (the call backs are tomorrow) But my last name starts with a ‘W’. SO… should I give up hope, or sit around waiting for the call?

  15. Seussical is such a great production. My High School held auditions just the other day. Sadly we do not find out until next Wednesday. I am hoping for the part of the Sour Kangaroo …

  16. Wow. Everyone here is from high school. I’m a 6th grader from Oak Hill Elementary. Our music teacher just announced that we are performing the Seussical, I’m so excited! I’m hoping on getting the part of the Sour Kangaroo or Mayzie La Bird. It’s going to be so much fun! The Seussical is one of the best plays broadway every did. I’m also trying to find a site where I can download the lyrics and songtracks free? Anyone know of one?

  19. Hey.. i’m a junior at my high school, and we’re going Seussical this April. I got the part of Sour Kangaroo. I have the big “brass and belty” voice” … but i want to know, does the sour kangaroo have any speaking lines?

  20. Im mayzie la bird and i live in that tree. enough about horton lets talk about me!
    We are doing to junior version at my school. i have done many plays before but this is the best. it is SUPER fun! to the question above me, the sour kangaroo does have “lines” the show is mostly an operetta, which has very little dialoge. maybe a few lines before a few songs. the sour kangaroo has a lot of singing, and she does say a few things in some songs. at least in the junior version. Good luck! i STRONGLY reccomend this play

  21. my school is doing Seussical for next year. im an alto. what parts could i play? i listened to some JoJo songs, but they seem just a bit high for me. any other suggestions?
    oh, and can the cat in the hat be played by a girl?

Hey whomever was asking about costumes like forever ago I was in this show and I was a jungle dancer/fish/hunch and when we were jungle dancers we were all girls and we wore black leotards with black tights and then we each got to choose an animal (I was a cheetah) and our costume designers made costumes based on that. For example, all animals that have fur (cheetahs, zebras etc.) wore tie- on skirts of that print with matching ears. It was very cool and fun. Also, since the change from jungle characters to fish was so fast, it provided an easy way to have a quick change so everything was based around the simple black leotard and tights and then we just added accessories. This is a very fun show and I am doing it again this coming year. I highly reccommend it to any director who has it in consideration.

  25. Catie, I think I was in a show with, you, because those were our costumes, too! I was a jaguar. Among others, there was a bamboo tree, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, etc.

    i was just in a prodctuion of seussical over in farmington hills. i was a bird girl. i was very lucky because they had to cut about 80 kids from the bunch :(. but we had two casts. we did a awesome job. they ahd 8 bird girls i have to say only half of the bird girls were actullay on key but some of the bird girls were handpciked because of the dancing and they hand picked me!!!!! so if you ever do this show BIRD GIRLS RULE LIKE IT OR NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. I’m playing Gertrude McFuzz at my school!!!!!!!!!! I’m so excited. Gertrude is such a fun character and has a lot of solo’s and singing roles. She’s supposed to be the sweet gentle one while Mayzie who is also a great fun part is just the opposite and thinks she’s (all that!) Gertrude is secretly in love with Horton too. I think every part is really important to the show and makes it better and funner. Its just really crazy and lots of FUN!!! The characters are: The cat in the hat, Jojo, Horton, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, Sour Kangaroo, Bird Girls, Wickersham brothers,Yurtle the Turtle, the Grinch, Jungle Creatures, Cindly Lou Who and the rest of the who’s. What ever part you get will be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  30. My 8 yr old is auditioning tomorrow for this musical and without knowing it he really liked Sour Kangeroo then we found out that it’s a girls role. He hits all the notes right on but I am not sure if its okay to audition for it. This is his first play. He does a nice Jo Jo but he is stronger for these two songs. any thoughts?

I’m not sure what a bird girl does in the show . I looked it up on the internet and I asked around , but I’m still not sure exactly what kind of charcter I am supposed to play . Does anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks !

  33. heeeyyyy im doin a middle school production in like less then a week and i got the role of gertrude mcfuzz. SHE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! any girls who are tryin out for seussical should totally shoot for the role of Gertrude M. shes soooooooo fun, crazy, LOUD, sumtimes annoying but mainly funny and romantic…..she has a crush on horton and he doesnt notice her cuz her tails sooooo small! and in the end they raise an elephant bird…….but in order to find out what happens in between you should watch it! i dont wanna give it all away but its a GREAT show!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have a really low voice sooo i have to belt all the high notes soooo “all for you” is really high for me and at some points it can sound like im screamin!!!but heeeeyyy thats what gertrude does best!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. I am a 4′ 10″ 7th grader who is going to be in a middle school production (6-8). Ive known the play since i wuz 5, and can sing every song well. What part should i try out for. I’m debating between JoJo and Cat, even though im female because jojo is higher than normal but Cat is the basic lead, and i love his song. FYI fave is sollo solu , its possible, or alone in the universe. Is cat or jojo the bigger part?

  37. Ooo, I loove Seussical. I’m the soprano bird girl and its sooo fun! The b-gs (bird girls…get it?) are BFFS and really if you havent seen it see it! mudblood, cat’s the lead. however, i think you should try out for jojo (if they’re accepting girls). racheal, a bird girl is like a snobby mean gossipy popular girl who almost worships mayzie. they sing like a greek chorus!

  38. Thanks, Jess! I auditioned fr both, did a callback for jojo (didn’t get to Cat durng callbacks) but the second callback list got posted and i’m in line for just Cat. Happy but said because Jojo is wicked cool! I am wondering if any one has tips for Cat. I may be tiny bu I have a BIG voice, i got the princess at the ren fest ,where the loudest get the parts. I’m totally nervous, cuz if I don’t get Cat, im part of the chorus, or at best a wickersham, and from Cat to chorus is crappy (alliteration Rocks!)

  43. My daughter just got cast as JoJo in a local production. I was surprised to hear that she’s going to be playing JoJo as female (I had assumed they would pin her hair up under a hat etc. and have the character still be a boy, but no.) They change the word “boy” to “girl” in the script when it comes up.
    I asked how they’re going to do the song “The Military”, because the General keeps repeating “The Military, that’s what makes a boy a man!” (The “boy” being JoJo). The director said they’re going to have JoJo keep protesting, “But…I’m a GIRL!” and the general just ignoring her and being oblivious. Hopefully it will be funny!

  45. im in 7th gr and were gonna do this! I am probably gonna be a lead and (im a girl) is sour kangaroo a BIG part. because i have a HUGE voice and i want a lead. either sour kangaroo mayzie labird or Gertrude. I can pretty much do anythingg on stage.. Which is like the BEST role singing wise like that the character is in every sccene, has solo songs, and lots of lines?
