The Key to Affiliate Products

If you run a popular blog, affiliate products can be a valuable and logical source of income for your online business. After all, if people trust you and like what you have to say about your industry or your niche, then they are also likely to want to know which products you endorse. Needless to say, it is important to approach the use of affiliate products in your business with the utmost integrity and honesty. There is nothing wrong with making money off of the products that you endorse, but keep in mind that there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it. As is often the case, if you are only focused on making money from affiliate products and lose sight of what kind of value they can really bring to your readers, all of your careful work to build your brand and customer loyalty just might fall apart. Here are some tips to make sure you are choosing the right affiliate products for your website and business:

1. Only Support Products that You Have Used and Were Happy With

One of the best ways to know that you are choosing the right affiliate products to run on your site is to only go with those products that you yourself have used and that you have been extremely happy and satisfied with. Better yet, find the handful of products that have changed your life by changing the course of your business for the better and only endorse those. Once your readers get to know that you don’t endorse shoddy products, you will see an even bigger boost in sales every time you do decide a product is worth recommending.

2. Make Sure Your Readers Know About Your Affiliate Ties with a Given Product

Transparency is key in maintaining the trust and loyalty that you have built up with your readers. Make sure that somewhere (not too out of the way) you state that this is an affiliate link to whichever product you are recommending. Lots of readers will have assumed that already, but some won’t, and anyway it’s just best to be upfront about these things. By all means let them know that you only endorse products that you stand behind 100%, but do let them know that you stand to profit if they buy through the product link.

3. Go Easy on Your Endorsements

This means don’t have too many affiliate links in your posts and also don’t hit people over the head with your product endorsements. People don’t like to feel like they’re being sold to every second, especially if they are coming to your site because they have come to trust you and your integrity. Don’t write reviews of products; instead write about a topic that seems important to both you and your readers, and if the product you want to endorse seems like it would be a good tool to solve whatever problem you’re discussing, then simply make it available to your readers. You’ll be surprised at how effective this subtle “soft-sell” approach can be, especially if you are writing for some of the more world-weary denizens of the Web.
