What is a Geek and Why You Need One

If you want to make money online, but you struggle with the techy stuff, you need a geek.
A geek is not necessarily a skinny guy with glasses & acne, a geek is simply someone, most likely a student or young person, who loves technology and knows more about it than you, who can help you out.
In the first of a four-part series from guest blogger, Zach Swinehart, we explore what a geek is and why you need one.
WHAT CAN A GEEK DO FOR YOU?
Geeks can help you with almost anything technology-related, especially if you’re the kind of person that has to mess around with your phone for a few hours to figure out how to change your ringtone.
Here are 5 common things a geek can help you with to spark some ideas:
1. Photoshopping – Whether you need to lay out a flyer, or get someone’s face out of your picture, a geek can help you.
2. Facebook & other social networks – Everyone knows that they need to be doing social networking for their business, but often times, that’s ALL that they know. A geek can explain how social networking works, create a profile for you, and show you how to use it.
3. Fixing unexpected computer shut-downs – It’s everyone’s worst nightmare: your computer unexpectedly shutting down and not coming back on! It’s possible your geek can get it working in a jiffy.
4. Updating your website – If you have a mental block about working on your computer, or you’re not yet comfortable with WordPress, you can have your geek make the simple updates to your website.
5. Uploading video to YouTube – Video is becoming more and more popular online, and it’s thus becoming more and more important that you know how to get your videos uploaded to YouTube.
WHY GEEKS ARE AN EXTREMELY VALUABLE ASSET
Well, if that huge list of things they can do for you didn’t make it clear why a geek is so valuable, I don’t know what will. But the fact of the matter is that you can’t do everything yourself, and when it comes to technology stuff, you can often find great help at a fantastic price.
The best way to think of a geek is as your own personal technology assistant. A geek is that local kid you can call that can stop by your house after school and fix your computer for you. With a good geek you can save yourself a ton of stress and make more money by doing the things that you get paid the big bucks for.
In the next article, you’ll learn all about the five different types of geeks, and how each one can benefit you.
Guest blogger, Zach Swinehart, is a true geek. He is author of The Geek Guidebook, recommended for those who want to hire a geek and get it right the first time.

I remember when I struggled with setting up WordPress blog. So I got someone in the neighbourhood to help me out. He was a student of computers and knew one or two things. So I agree, geeks are misnomer not always like pictured in the movies. They are friendly people.
Great post zack. Yes the world needs geeks badly. People like me just cant do without one. A geek helped installed wordpress theme for me once sweet..just because i find installing wordpress theme is too much work..
Wooot. Never know that geek can give a lot of benefits to blogger/vlogging and a great impact on business.
Thanks for sharing this info.
I am a geek, but I am neither skinny or young (any more). I used to be both, but that’s beside the point.
Anyway, even though I am not afraid of technology and can set up WordPress blogs, there are things that I just don’t have time to do…or the time to learn the new technology. I am constantly learning about some new theme or plugin that will help me or my customers. Even I need another geek sometimes.
Hi Susie, definitely a great task for a geek to help with! It’s a perfect example of something a geek can do in 10 seconds that would end up taking you waaayyyyyy longer than that, ha ha.
You’re welcome! Be sure to check back for the next articles in the series — I’ll be getting into how to find a geek, how to work with one, and all sorts of other good stuff!
Thanks, Joel. Valuable info that many people need. I have hired two college interns to help me. I have been studying social media marketing on my own and increased my monthly website visits from 25 to 400. My blog shares how I did it by blogging and promoting the blog posts primarily on LinkedIn.
The biggest learning was to promote on many LinkedIn groups. The first time I did that I had 41 visits in a single day!
hey guys good post i am one of those geeks it wasnt always that way though im a bit stubern anything i couldnt do i just wouldn leave it till i got it myself bit time consuming and a good while later im now officially a geek
And really Doug, you’re an ideal person to look for a geek, because you know enough to know whether they are BS-ing you or not. 🙂
Funny, that’s one of the first thoughts I had; “What does young mean, anyway?” I’m 52 and young for my local demographic…. And still skinny, wearing glasses, acne cleared up 30+ years ago, now. Like you, Doug, if I find I need help, I phone another “geek”, but I don’t use the term routinely, due to my thoughts on overused terms, like this one. Learning something new every day is what makes this occupation rewarding, with the greatest reward coming from sharing knowledge with others. Blogging is the ultimate community outreach program. The only thing better is live instruction in front of a curious and fully engaged audience. Stand and deliver and they love you for it. BR
Geeks are awesome and whether we like it or not, they run the world!
I would love my own army of geeks to do my bidding so I could concentrate 100% on growing my business. Maybe one day that time will come!
