Work On Your Passion

A lot of people were surprised at the success of iFart Mobile. Apple had brought out this incredible device – a phone that was a computer and a camera and could do just about anything except make coffee and add the sugar.

We took that platform and we brought it down to a whole new level. We turned it into a whoopee cushion.

I’m not surprised that so many people were surprised it did so well.

I’m surprised it did that well.

We thought we’d make some money out of it. We thought we’d cover our expenses and turn a nice profit.

Mostly though, we believed we’d, erm… have a blast making it. As long as we enjoyed ourselves, we knew that creating the app was the right choice.

Of course, the product had to pay its way. But we didn’t create it because we expected to sell more than half a million downloads.

We created it because we thought that some people might want it… and because we really wanted to make it.

That’s the point. You probably have a dozen great ideas bouncing around inside your head at the moment. Any one of them – maybe even all of them – could be fantastic opportunities that other people have ignored and which could turn you into a millionaire.

But ideas are cheap and easy. Implementation is difficult, expensive and takes a long time. When the only reason you’re implementing an idea is that you think it will make you a lot of money, it’s more likely that it won’t make you anything but miserable.

The distance from brainstorm to megabucks is usually too long when you’re fueled only by the hope of getting rich. You have to enjoy the drive as well, otherwise you’ll break down halfway to your destination.

When you’re going through your ideas and wondering which one you should focus on next, forget about the money for a while. Don’t think about which concept will bring in the most cash when it’s done. Think instead about which one you want to do the most.

It’s only when you’re really passionate about the product, about creating it and about sharing it with the world that you’ll actually create it. And it’s only then that other people are passionate enough to buy it.
