You Say You Want a Revolution
Every New Year, it’s the same thing.
The ball drops, we sing Auld Lang Syne (which most people don’t really know the words to) and we hug and kiss those that are dear to us.
And then come the resolutions.
I’m going to try to quit smoking.
I’m going to try to lose weight.
I’m going to try to exercise more.
I’m going to try to quit my job and start my own business.
I’m going to try to spend more time with my wife/husband/kids/friends
I’m going to try to … yada yada yada… the list goes on.
Personally, I don’t see a point in making resolutions.
A resolution is a decision, but unless it comes from the center of our being, it’s not a decision we can follow through with. This is why most resolutions fail.
Or as the great Muppet sage of Star Wars once said:

We can’t “try” to do things. A resolution that is going to find it’s way to victory is a decision that matters so much to us that “trying” isn’t an option. Trying usually just sets us up for failure. At least then we can say “well, I tried.”
Succeeding is the only option.
Unfortunately, most of the time we want that extra piece of pie MORE than we want to lose weight.
We want that hour relaxing on the sofa MORE than we want to get up and go for a walk.
We want “me” time more than we want to pick up the phone and call a sibling or parent.
We want what we want more than the thing that we SAY we want. Our true desires are revealed by our real behavior.
As I look back on my life, I recognize that the real, lasting, significant changes occurred NOT when I made a resolution, but when I had an inner REVOLUTION!
A revolution of the soul is an inner change so earthshaking that it forever transforms who you are.
In my case, the real revolutions have led to changes in every area that matters… physically, emotionally, spiritually, relationally and in business.
In 2010, I didn’t resolve to lose weight and get fit. I DECIDED to do it. I knew from the moment I have made the decision that I would succeed. It was just a matter of time.
What resolutions are you making for the coming year? Are you wholeheartedly, fully-committed to seeing them through? If not, you are setting yourself up for failure. It will make for great water cooler talk about how your have broken your resolutions.
What you REALLY need for the coming year is a REVOLUTION.
What do you really want to accomplish? How badly do you want it? What sacrifices will you make to get there? And do you believe that you will get there or are you just going to try?
When you make a decision and can visualize it as good as done (and believe that to be the case), you have won the hardest part of the battle. Believing it with your whole heart (because the result is what your whole heart really longs for) is the hardest part of the battle. The rest is just following through on what you already knew you were going to do.
It’s time to put away the resolutions. What youneed is an inner revolution.

Let the revolution begin!
Please share the revolutions that are stirring within you in the comments field below. I love to hear from you and support you on your journey.

Hey Joel, Loved the article. As I read it, my Dad came to mind. He used to drive me crazy when he would say, “You can NEVER should-a.”
In his black and white world, either you did or you didn’t. “I was gonna…” was the worst thing I could say. I finally got what he meant and his philosophy continues to serve me well.
Thanks for what you do. I, for one, appreciate it very much.
Hello Joel
It IS time for a revolution. I love your message. Revolutions have changed humanity for the better all throught history.
This year I am committed to creating a revolution within my soul and in the world…..
Thank you for sharing your message, talent and mentorship.

Dear sir Joel Comm in my situation dont know what say , thanks for atention , with all due respectful
You are so right that resolutions are not effective. I love the idea of starting my own revolution for 2014. Over the years my biggest breakthroughs came from the energy of creating a revolution and deciding to make a change in my life.
In 2014, I’m creating a new personal revolution that will allow me to help even more people become successful than I did in 2013. I’ve realized my passion in life comes from helping others so I’m building a lifestyle that will enable me to help as many people as possible while living life on my terms.
AMEN! I Agree, I never liked the idea if resolutions. Why should we only consider to make positive changes in our lives at the start of the year. We can decide, to make our selves better each and everyday. My REVOLUTION THIS 2014 is to Mega grow Savvy this year. (to over 1 Million in listener-ship, and tons more super happy clients & advertisers)
Happy New Year Joel! May 2014 be filled w/ Love, Healthy, Prosperity, and Joy!
Christina
You are right, revolution never fails. My own revolution started some time ago and I feel good about it.
Have a nice 2014!
Great perspective of beginning a revolution rather than a resolution. I have had, and I’m starting, many revolutions. I disagree with “there is no try, only do”. I know many friends and relatives that won’t do because -insert excuse here- and so never begin. Why not try? Try something new and exciting. It could be a life changer!
thank you great post :: Dont think just do it:
Hey Joel,
I always love your posts and find they challenge my own views.
Resolutions & Revolution change nothing. Real change requires a nuclear explosion especially in how you think about yourself. Only you can find and press that button. I hope you find it in 2014.
Best Wishes to you and all your Tribe,
Andy
Joeeeeelllll!!!!! what a WONDERFUL post! it’s SO easy like that… JUST DO IT and not just say it! mannnnn… realy blowed my mind, I swear, I have big life changing plans for me this 2014 and I was scared, I thought “may be won’t work” but as you say… I never said “I gonna try” I my mind, I allways said “I gonna do it”
Sorry for my bad english and greetings from Paraguay
The “Revolution” idea is great Joel.
What changed in 2010 for you so that you KNEW for certain you would accomplish your fitness goal? What was the spark – or what caused such a strong certainty that you would achieve the goal?
